阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Unusual Castles Around the World
Whether a fantastic achievement of architecture or just a try to appeal to the public intentionally, the four curious castles below are far from ordinary.
Kelburn Castle, Largs, Scotland
When viewed from some sides, Kelburn Castle looks like a typical Scottish castle. But on the building’s south side, the stone tower and walls are covered in cartoon-style graffiti (涂鸦). The castle’s graffiti is the work of four artists. The graffiti took 1,500 cans of paint to create.
Predjama Castle, Predjama. Slovenia
Predjama Castle was built directly into the mouth of a cave located halfway up a little over 123-meter cliff (悬崖) face. Although the site dates back to at least the 13th century, the current building was reconstructed during the 16th century. The impressive castle holds the Guinness World Records for the largest cave castle in the world.
Swallow’s Nest, Gaspra, Crimea
It’s common for castles to be built near the edge of a cliff, but few look so unsafe as the Swallow’s Nest in Crimea, which extends out over the Black Sea. The foundation of this small castle, which measures 20 meters in length and 10 meters in width, extends beyond the edge of the 40-meter cliff. The current stone building was once a wooden structure.
Trosky Castle, Troskovice, Czech Republic
On the top of two volcanic mouths is Trosky Castle, which dates back to the end of the 14th century. Along with the towers on each peak, the castle is also built on the ridge (山脊) that connects the peaks. After a defensive stronghold during war time, the castle was abandoned. The government took control of the site in 1925 and the remains of its walls are now carefully maintained.
21. What highlights Kelburn Castle
A. Its history. B. Its location. C. Its design. D. Its function.
22. What do Predjama Castle and Swallow’s Nest have in common
A. They were once rebuilt. B. They were abandoned.
C. They are cave castles. D. They are the same length.
23. Which castle lies on the volcanic rock

“Should I go I do have a lot of work to do.” The question came from my daughter, Tracy, a college senior, who was debating whether or not to go with her roommates on a Saturday to drive to the beach and enjoy some unseasonably warm March weather.
On the one hand, sand, sunshine, and perhaps some fried food were prizes she deserved after a hard-won year of college life; on the other hand, her thesis (论文) conclusion wasn’t going to write itself. As a rather type A student, Tracy was unsure if she should go, and had asked my opinion.
As I read her text, I remembered my own college road trips in the 80s. At that time, four of us theater students, anxious and disappointed about the posting of a cast list, had driven out to the countryside through apple orchards (果园). We stopped at the side of the road to climb over a stone wall to grab some apples from a tree, taking off laughing, and ending the trip with ice-creams. I still remember sitting at a picnic table with the kind of laughter that you hope will never end.
I texted my daughter back, “Take the day off and go to the beach. The thesis can wait.” Actually, I wanted to text her much more than that. I wanted to tell her that college is for so many things—academic and personal growth and challenges, all-night study sessions, paper deadlines, and office hours. But it’s also for road trips with your roommates and a chance to extricate every bit of stress and responsibility for a few hours.
College is for the memories that you don’t think are anything special right now. But someday, one of you will say, “Hey, remember that time on the beach ” And those precious memories are worth more than any thesis conclusion ever could be.
24. Why did Tracy hesitate to go to the beach
A. She was kind of stay-at-home. B. She had to complete her paper.
C. She worried about the weather. D. She didn’t invite her roommates.
25. What made the author and his classmates decide to take a road trip at college
A. Their demand for spiritual relief.
B. Their desire to test their new car.
C. Their need to experience country life.
D. Their plan for seeking play materials.
26. What does the underlined word “extricate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Take on. B. Think of. C. Go through. D. Shake off.
27. What does the author want to convey in the text
A. Good friends always make life happier.
B. Stress from college life can play its part.
C. College memories are more than academic achievements.
D. Academic achievements absolutely come first at college.

Research has shown that listening to music while showering, taking a walk or travelling to school could affect your ability to think outside the box and come up with artistic or creative things to do. Experts say being bored can lead to daydreaming plus the birth of new ideas.
While there is nothing wrong with listening to music, doing so when taking a shower or going for a walk takes away time that could be spent thinking about yourself and your life—the perfect time to let your creative juices flow. Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin said, “You need this open-searching time in order for new ideas to spring up. This is why people get ideas in the shower or in the middle of the night—it’s a period of time when the brain creates its own fun. It’s when I’m bored that I have big insights because my brain is open and trying to entertain itself.”
A recent study by psychologists showed the same process at work. In the research, two groups of people were expected to come up with proposals. They were then asked to complete the task in two backgrounds. One is in a quiet room while the other is with music playing. Researchers found, compared to participants who completed tasks in a quiet background, participants who listened to music performed less creatively.
So, is it best to throw away the bath-time tunes Most people said the research was a real mood killer. One said, “Sometimes, I need the music to cover all the thoughts I don’t want to think.” Another commented, “Many people have too much going on in their heads. That’s why they listen to music in the shower, by which they can actually relax.” But other listeners said they liked having quiet time while travelling home at the end of the day.
In any case, striking a good balance and listening to music sometimes but being quiet at other times could be the best balance in our life.
28. What do the experts find according to the first paragraph
A. Keeping our minds busy brings in new ideas.
B. Listening to music helps to bring inspiration.
C. Taking a walk keeps us from daydreaming.
D. Feeling bored tends to stir up our creativity.
29. How does the psychologists do the research
A. By observing through daily life.
B. By referring to former reports.
C. By carrying out an experiment.
D. By filling up a questionnaire.
30. How do most people find the result of the research
A. Unacceptable. B. Misleading. C. Confusing. D. Convincing.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Does your playlist really appeal to you
B. Is it time to throw away your playlist
C. Listening to music keeps us mentally fit
D. Being quiet is always a good habit for us
D
AI may sound like a cold robotic system, but scientists from Osaka Metropolitan University have shown that it can deliver heart warning, or more to the point, “heart-warning” support. They find a new use of AI, diagnosing (诊断) functions of our heart and valvular (瓣膜的) heart disease with its accuracy, which shows continued progress in combining the fields of medicine and technology to advance patient care.
Valvular heart disease, one cause of heart failure, is often diagnosed by echocardiography (心超声检查). This technique, however, requires specialized skills. However, there is a shortage of qualified technicians. Meanwhile, chest X-ray is one of the most common tests to identify diseases, mainly of the lungs, and very little time is required to conduct them, making them highly accessible. Even though the heart is also visible in chest X-ray, little was known about their ability to identify heart function or disease. Therefore, the research team led by Dr. Daiju Ueda from Osaka Metropolitan University, thought that if heart function and disease could be determined by chest X-ray, this could serve as a supplement to echocardiography.
To build the relationship between them, the team turned to the AI model. They researched as many related data as possible. A total of 22,551 chest radiographs associated with 22,551 echocardiograms were collected from 16,946 patients between 2013 and 2021. With the chest radiographs set as input data, and the echocardiograms set as output data, the AI model was trained to learn features connecting both data.
The AI model was proved to be able to identify exactly the types of valvular heart disease. “t took us a very long time to get to the results, but I believe this is a significant research. In addition to improving the efficiency of doctors’diagnosis, the system might also be used in areas where there are no specialists, in night-time emergencies, and for patients who have difficulty undergoing echocardiography,” Daiju Ueda said.
32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To give an example. B. To offer the advice.
C. To lead in the topic. D. To make a warning.
33. What do we know about chest X-ray in diagnosing heart disease
A. It may reduce the dependence on echocardiography.
B. It is actually more accurate than echocardiography.
C. It is more acceptable to patients with heart disease.
D. It has been applied to diagnose heart disease before.
34. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. The conclusion of testing the AI model.
B. The process of the AI model working.
C. The advantage and disadvantage of the AI model.
D. The similarity of chest X-ray and the AI model.
35. What is Dr. Daiju Ueda’s attitude to the AI model in diagnosing heart disease
A. Worried. B. Critical. C. Confused. D. Supportive.

Molly was a single mother of two. She was new here so she didn’t interact much with her neighbors. However, she’d heard a lot of rumors (谣言) about her 82-year-old neighbor, Mr. Palmer. Some neighbors said he was spiritually sick. However, when she first saw Mr. Palmer, she did feel he was strange with his lonely lifestyle.
One day, Molly ran into Mr. Palmer. He was standing by a signal light and glancing around even after the light went green. Molly realized he needed help to cross the street, so she approached him. “Mr. Palmer. I’m Molly. I’ve only lately moved here. Can I help you ” she asked gently. The old man smiled at her. “Oh, Molly! Yes! Would you mind helping me cross the street ” “Of course not, Mr. Palmer,” she smiled. As they reached the other end of the street, Mr. Palmer thanked her over and over again. After that, Molly realized he wasn’t a strange man but just a lonely soul misjudged by everyone.
Days later, Molly got a new job and was just on a trial period, so she was too busy to babysit her kids, Ben aged 6, who had got epilepsy (癫痫) and Adam aged 4, when she was sometimes on the night shift.
One day, when she was returning home, she noticed Mr. Palmer sitting on a resting chair on his doorway. She stopped by and greeted him. During the chat, Mr. Palmer said he suffered from insomnia (失眠症), and only slept late in the morning for 5 to 6 hours at a time. Molly figured she could ask Mr. Palmer for help to babysit her kids while she was on her night shifts. When she asked him about it, he was happy to help.

W: Oh, hello, I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings, Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: I like chatting with friends too.
W: Oh, it’s time for class. Our English teacher is coming. After class I’ll introduce you to some of my friends.

M: Welcome to Freshman Orientation Week. We have some fun activities planned for you, and we also want to make sure we answer all your questions. More than anything, we want you to make friends, enjoy yourself, and become part of the Smith College family. You’ve all received a backpack with some free school supplies. Did you notice that the back-packs come in six different colors That’s because you’ll be divided into six different teams. Look for the flag that matches your backpack color. If you have an orange backpack, you should go to the orange flag. And those with blue backpacks go to the blue flag. We also have yellow, red, green, and black flags, and so everybody knows where to go. OK, today you will take part in a race to find seven different places. You should find all the places on the list. Make sure you take a picture of yourself at each place, and come back here when you’re done. The first team to finish will win free gift cards to the university bookstore. Now, here are a few more instructions. Choose one person to be your leader and another to be your photographer. And remember that even if you don’t finish the whole list, be back here by twelve o’clock. Now, let’s start our race. Ready Go!

However, one day, when Molly got home from work early in the morning, her children and Mr. Palmer were nowhere to be seen. She called her kids’ names, but no one responded. Molly’s heart fell as she searched the entire house, including the backyard and garage, but couldn’t find her children. She even called Mr. Palmer, but he didn’t answer. “What did that old man do with my kids ” She was shaking with anxiety, and all the horrible rumors about Mr. Palmer were running through her mind. She was about to call the police when her phone suddenly rang.
The call was from an unknown number, and she was in formed that her son Ben was in hospital. Molly dashed to the hospital, where she learned that Ben had an epilepsy attack. She had forgotten to tell Mr. Palmer about Ben’s condition, but the old man, thankfully, took her son to the hospital in time. Molly burst into tears when she saw her kids. Mr. Palmer said, “I apologize for not calling you. I needed to get Ben here quickly and left my phone at home. And I brought young Adam with me.” Molly felt guilty for judging Mr. Palmer and was beyond grateful to him. So after that, she often dropped by the older man’s home to help him around the house.
