Born in New York in 1918, scientist Gertrude B. Elion had an impressive career, during which she developed medicines to cure many major diseases.
Gertrude B. Elion spent her early youth in Manhattan. She attended senior high school and had, in her words, “an unbelievable thirst for knowledge”.
Influenced by the death of her grandfather, who died of cancer, Elion entered Hunter College at age 15 and graduated in chemistry at age 19. She had difficulty finding employment after graduation, because many laboratories refused to hire women chemists. She found part-time jobs as a lab assistant and went back to school at New York University. Elion worked as a high school teacher for a few years while finishing work on her master’s degree, which she earned in 1941.
The start of World War II created more opportunities for women. Elion was able to get a job at Burroughs-Wellcome in 1944, where she began a 40-year partnership with Dr. George H. Hitchings. Her thirst for knowledge impressed Dr. Hitchings, and he permitted her to take on more responsibility.
Elion and Hitchings set out on a course of creating medicines by studying the chemical composition of diseased cells. Rather than relying on old trial-and-error methods, they used the differences in biochemistry between normal human cells and pathogens (病原体) to design medicines. In all, Elion obtained 45 patents on medicine and was awarded 23 honorary degrees (名誉学位).
In 1988, Elion received the Nobel Prize for Medicine, together with George H. Hitchings and Sir James Black. She received other awards for her work, including the National Medal of Science in 1991, and that same year, she became the first woman to be absorbed into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In 1997, she was awarded the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award.

A. To meet her grandfather’s wishes.
B. To find a good job after graduation.

D. To create medicines to cure diseases.
26. What is the major reason for Elion’s success in developing medicines
A. She relied on teamwork.
B. She dared to try new ways.
C. She improved traditional methods.
D. She had enough medical knowledge.
27. What does the author tell us about Elion in the last paragraph
A. Her later life.

You’re doing homework online for a science class. A question appears: Do newborn babies see the world in black and white You don’t know the answer. Do you google it
Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the
homework. But it won’t necessarily help you learn. Researchers note that
students who usually receive higher marks on the homework but lower test grades are much more likely to use the Internet for answers while completing their homework. With these findings in mind, the researchers are questioning the validity of homework as a useful learning tool.
Glass, a psychologist (心理学家), discovered this from analyzing homework and the grades on tests that he gave college students who took his courses from 2008 to 2017. He gave his students a series of online homework tasks. In 2008, only around 3 out of 20 students performed better on their homework than on the exam. By 2017, more than half of the students performed this way.
Glass wondered what caused this result. So he thought about what had changed over the 10 years. One big thing was the rise of smartphones. They existed in 2008, but were not common. Now almost everyone carries one. So it would be easier today to quickly go online and find the answer to almost any homework question. But students can’t use phones during an exam. And that might explain why they aren’t doing that well on the tests.
To test this, Glass and a co-author Kang asked students in 2017 and 2018 whether they came up with their homework answers themselves or looked them up. Students who tended to look up answers also tended to do better on homework than their exams.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A. To share a story.
B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To lead in the topic.
D. To answer a critical question.
29. What does the underlined word “validity” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Effect. B. Purpose.
C. Content. D. Possibility.
30. What makes students finish homework better according to Glass’ study
A. The rise of the Internet.
B. The progress in teaching.
C. The help from parents.
D. The popularity of smartphones.
31. Which section of a newspaper is this text probably taken from
A. Technology and education.
B. Study and intelligence.
C. Lifestyle and fashion.
D. Test and evaluation.

Berlin-based Green City Solutions believes its moss (苔藓) walls, called CityTrees, which are about 4 m2 in size, can filter (过滤) up to 80% of pollution particles (微粒) out of the air, including the tiny ones linked to lung diseases.
The walls collect rainwater, which is pumped through a watering system to the plants using solar energy. These also drive fans to increase airflow through the plants. As a result, the company says its product filters 3,500 m3 of air an hour, which is equal to the total amount of air breathed by 7,000 people in that time.
Alison Haynes at the University of Wollongong and her colleagues recently looked at how effectively moss and trees reduced pollution. They found that moss was up to four times better at trapping particles than the native Australian tree.
But this doesn’t mean moss walls will necessarily protect people from pollution at busy bus stops, says Zoran Ristovski at the Queensland University of Technology. In a small room, a moss wall only needs to filter a relatively small amount of new air each hour, but tens or hundreds of times this amount of air is pushed past by buses, he says. Therefore, a moss wall in a street is unlikely to make any difference.
Different solutions will be needed, says Ruby Michael at Griffith University. Where streets are crowded with tall buildings on both sides, she says, tree planting can backfire (适得其反) because trees can reduce airflow and therefore moss walls may be a better option.
Cities are unlikely to rush to replace their trees just yet. “It’s important to remember that street trees provide a whole host of other benefits, including habitat for urban wildlife, shelter from the sun for people on the street, and reduction of urban heat islands,” says Michael.
32. What is the main function of CityTrees
A. Reusing rainwater.
B. Curing lung diseases.
C. Improving air quality.
D. Greening urban areas.
33. What does Zoran Ristovski say about moss walls
A. They work better on busy streets.
B. They are suitable for domestic use.
C. They may fail to serve their purpose.
D. They are unlikely to tackle terrible traffic.
34. Which of the following might Ruby Michael agree with
A. Street trees cause urban heat islands.
B. Building CityTrees is at the top of the list.
C. Moss walls around tall buildings should be removed.
D. Measures should be adopted according to local conditions.
35. What’s the text mainly about
A. A better solution to air pollution.
B. A new path towards healthier air.
C. The big benefits of adopting moss walls.
D. The comparison between moss and trees.

Whether we’re sad about the loss of a loved one or angry at friends or family, it often feels good to let the emotions all out because sharing our emotions reduces our stress and helps us feel good. 36 . Expressing our emotions often to others may actually make us feel worse, especially if we don’t find a way to comfort ourselves.
37 . This led to a movement to “let it all out”, with experts telling people to hit soft objects, like pillows, to release (释放) negative feelings. It turns out, however, that this type of emotional venting (发泄) likely doesn’t reduce anger. That’s because encouraging people to act out their anger makes them relive it in their bodies, making it easier to get angry the next time. 38 .
Being selective when you express your emotions is a good way. There’re many ways to deal with difficult emotions and not all of them involve other people. 39 , such as writing your thoughts down or changing your environment to help you handle your emotions.
When you share your emotions with others, remind them to offer suggestions. Ask them questions like “ 40 ” or “What should I do in this situation ” This will make them know that you’re looking for something more than a listening ear.
A. Does expressing my feelings actually help
B. How should I think about this differently
C. Actually sometimes you can find solutions on your own
D. But sharing covers many different modes of communication
E. So it’s important to choose a healthier way to express emotions
F. However, we should try hard to seek support from those around us
G. Experts used to believe negative emotions needed to be released physically
