12. I think that I always knew I wanted to become an artist. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting pictures. My oldest sister and my brother were artistic, and watching them draw fascinated me. They had many different art supplies around the house. Boxes of pastels, little ink bottles and pens were very appealing.
My parents and friends soon saw that I had more than a passing interest in art. It came to define much of my image. Relatives gave me art-related birthday gifts. At school I became “the kid who could draw,” a unique distinction, like “brainiest” or “best athlete”.
As I got a little older, I began copying pictures: cartoons, comic books, and magazine illustrations.
My third-grade class wrote essays on what we wanted to be when we grew up. To me it was obvious. We read them aloud, and I told about the types of paintings I would some day try. I’d have turtles with paintbrushes tied to their backs walking around on a big sheet of paper. Or I’d fill squirt guns with different colored paints and shoot at the canvas. I actually tried this with friends! Well, it sounded like a good idea.
One of the only discouraging childhood experiences about my artwork happened in the fourth grade. During study time I was drawing a picture. My teacher took it away and wrote an angry note home to my mother. “David would rather be drawing pictures than doing his work!!!” I couldn’t believe it, three exclamation points. School “art classes” were pretty uninspiring. Art never seemed to be taken as seriously as other subjects.
In the eighth grade, a big career day was held. Months before, we wrote suggestions for careers we wanted to hear about. On the big day, guest speakers from many fields came to talk, but there wasn’t one that came close to an art-related field.
In high school it actually sank in that I was going to be an artist. I already knew. I’d always known. My parents were excited about my choice, too. As I looked into art schools, I felt like doors were being thrown wide open. Until then my art was a private thing, but at art school I found a place where everyone as “the kid who could draw.”

11. In high school I was very shy, content to hang around with my small group of friends and to concentrate on my courses. I was quickly labeled a "brain". I did so well that by the end of my senior year I had perfect grades and enough college credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework.
But in early June of the senior year, the principal called me into his office. He asked me to give a speech at graduation. I looked at him in surprise, my heart thumping. This was the reward for my hard work I murmured (低语) something and fled the office, blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have broken up my perfect record.
I finally agreed to a compromise (妥协). I would share the honor with five other students. I agreed to introduce my friend Judy, who would then give her own, full-length speech.
Graduation day soon arrived. I'd been practicing my speech for days, and I had it memorized. The first half hour of the ceremony passed in a blur(模糊的记忆), and then my moment came. My name was announced. I managed to reach the stage without falling down. I faced my classmates. My voice trembled a little, but mostly it was clear and strong. Within seconds, I was done and headed back to my seat. I accomplished something I'd never dreamed of—I spoke in front of hundreds of people.
Although I didn't realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to take part in classes at college, to give verbal(口头的) reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness. I never would have chosen to give a speech at graduation—or ever. But I'm glad I did. I no longer hesitate when I'm faced with the prospect of doing something I fear. I know it may very well turn out to be one of my shining moments.
1.Why was the writer called a "brain"
A.She was the most intelligent student. B.She was the head of her small group.
C.She was a bookworm all the time. D.She did more coursework for good grades.
2.What can we learn about the writer from the second paragraph
A.She ruined her health by studying hard. B.She got the reward as was expected.
C.She was grateful for giving a speech. D.She wasn't good at physics at school.
3.How did the author feel at the beginning of the graduation speech
A.Excited. B.Moved. C.Scared. D.Embarrassed.
4.What did the speech bring to the author at last
A.She had nothing to fear in life. B.She won enough college credits.
C.She got rid of her shyness. D.She desired to become a speaker.
12. The effects of coffee consumption on health have long been a subject of conflict and uncertainty. Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as it is harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health.
According to a scientific report, mild coffee consumption, three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern, along with other healthful behaviours. The report also says that coffee consumption helps reduce the risk of heart disease and it protects against Parkinson's disease.
According to Dr Donald Hensrud of Mayo Clinic, high consumption of coffee has health risks. Dr Hensrud mentions the dangers of high coffee consumption for people with a certain illness that slows the breakdown of caffeine in the body. Some studies say that drinking two or more cups of coffee daily can actually increase the risk of heart disease in these people.
According to conclusions from a recent study led by Dr Gregory Marcus, a doctor from the University of California, San Francisco, daily moderate consumption of coffee, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.
Until the scientific community reaches a general agreement on the effects of coffee consumption on human health, it will be up to the individual to decide whether the benefits of drinking coffee are greater than the risks.
When informed of these possible health benefits and harms of drinking coffee, Harwood, a high school student stated, "Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health, not to mention I need coffee to stay awake."
1.What is people's attitude towards the effects of coffee on health according to Paragraph 1
A.Disapproving. B.Tolerant. C.Doubtful. D.Mixed.
2.What does the underlined word "moderate" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Personal. B.Slight. C.Reasonable. D.Heavy.
3.What can we infer about Harwood
A.He'll keep on drinking coffee. B.He loves his high school life.
C.He often falls asleep in class. D.He has some health problems.
4.What would be the best title for the text
A.Why People Love Coffee B.How Coffee Affects Health
C.The Culture of Coffee Drinking D.The New Findings of Heart Disease

8.答案:Climbing; is

I did so well... had perfect grades and enough college credits to give up an entire quarter of coursework. 故选A。
根据第二段中的blaming myself for staying away from physics, a subject sure to have broken up my perfect record可推知,作者的物理成绩不好,打破了她的完美记录。 This was the reward for my hard work 是一种反问,故B,C两项错误。故选D。
I managed to reach the stage without falling down.和My voice trembled a little可知,毕业演讲开始的时候作者脚步不稳,声音发抖,非常害怕。故选C。
Although I didn't realize it at the time, the successful completion of that speech gave me the confidence to take part in classes at college, to give verbal reports, and to eventually break free of my shyness.
Since the 1980s, some have spoken out against coffee as it is harmful to health, while others have welcomed coffee for its supposed benefits to health,
根据画线词所在句...daily moderate consumption of coffee, less than 4 cups, is not associated with these issues.及上文第二段中的three to five cups per day, can be taken as a healthy dietary pattern(每天3—5杯咖啡可以被视为是健康的饮食方式)可推知, moderate的意思应该是"适量的; 合理的"。故选C。
Even though there might be some negative effects of drinking coffee, for the most part, coffee drinking sounds good for health, not to mention I need coffee to stay awake." 故选A。

She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27, when she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State, at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children, five of whom survived; her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted. Three of the pictures were exhibited(展览) in the Museum of Modem Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York. Between the 1930s and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form. "I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it," she said.
