W: It’s so cold today. I remembered to wear my coat but I really should have put on a scarf.
M: Yes, it’s freezing, but at least you have your gloves with you. I don’t have a pair. I should get some.
2.【原文】
W: Would you like to go with me to the circus I want to train and play with animals.
M: Why the circus Let’s go to a farm and become a cowboy and a cowgirl.
W: Yeah, I never thought of that! Cows are cute, too!
3.【原文】
W: Can you see as far as the stop sign
M: Which one I can see three stop signs. The first one is two blocks away. The second one is three blocks away.
And the last one is two blocks away from the second one.
4.【原文】
W: Sorry, could you repeat what you said I didn’t hear you very clearly. Did you say you are coming over in an
hour
M: No, I said I just got out of the shower. Sorry, I was just chewing on something.
5.【原文】
W: Keep quite still, Mr. Jones. Ah yes, you’ll need a tooth filling there but the rest of your teeth are fine.
M: That’s a relief. This is more frightening than a job interview.
6.【原文】
W: Janet says that she can’t make it this weekend.
M: Now that she and Paul both canceled, it will just be us.
W: Should we still go then I don’t know if it is worth it.
M: I think we should still go. The tickets are cheaper than normal this weekend.
W: The tickets may be cheaper, but the hotel will cost more without them to split the bill with. I still want to see the
museum, but I can wait. I only put aside enough money for our original plan.
M: I guess you’re right. The exhibition will not be moving for a few months still. We’ll get another chance to see it
if we reschedule.

W: How many eggs come in a dozen
M: A dozen is 12.
W: Really I thought it was 13 but thinking about it now, it wouldn’t make sense for the box to have an uneven
number of spaces.
M: There is something called a baker’s dozen. A long time ago, giving a smaller amount of bread than a person paid
for was illegal. So then bakers began to put one extra piece in their bags so they would not be fined.
W: Wow! That is interesting! How do you know so much about old bakers
M: My grandfather owned a bakery. He made bread all the time! It was so delicious.
W: That does sound delicious. Do you know how to bake bread
M: No, I wish I had learned properly. My grandfather tried to show me once, but I was too young to understand.
8.【原文】
W: I can’t believe I’m meeting your entire family for the first time tomorrow.
M: They are really looking forward to meeting you. What are you so worried about
W: Everything — what to wear, what to say, what to bring…
M: Hey, just relax and be yourself. My family will welcome you with open arms.
W: Can you tell me about them again
M: Sure. My mother and father were both teachers. My brother is a fireman.
W: Who else will be there
M: My grandma and grandpa. You’ll like my grandma. She is really sweet. And my grandpa is really funny.
W: What does your sister do
M: She studies biology too, so you two should have a lot to talk about.
W: Oh, good. Should I bring something or prepare a special dish
M: My parents are cooking everything. A bottle of wine for my parents will be enough.
W: Do you think I should wear that flower dress I have
M: Wear whatever you want. I promise my parents will like you no matter what.

W: Mr. Evans, I’m not sure what to do for my senior project. I thought I would write about French society during
Napoleon’s time. But I’m not exactly thrilled about doing a ton of research.
M: Listen, I know a professor who is planning a five-day trip to Paris for his French class. Do you think your father
would let you go
W: I don’t know. He probably wouldn’t want me wandering around a foreign city on my own.
M: Well, you wouldn’t be alone. And you’d still have to finish your project. But this professor will be taking his
group to many different museums, libraries, and monuments — the best sources of information! How fluent are you
in French

W: I can speak and read very well.
M: Good! Well, the trip is in two weeks. Talk to your father and let me know by Friday if you’ll be able to go. I’ll
arrange everything and talk to the school principal after that.
W: Umm, how much will the ticket be
M: That will be paid by the school. There is a special fund for outstanding seniors like you who are going to college
next year. And the professor will be able to use his research money to pay for your meals and accommodation.
You’d just need to pay for extra things like snacks or souvenirs.
W: Wow! That will certainly help convince my father!

Hunting is part of the culture in many countries around the world, including right here in the European Union.
Recently, some African countries have been widely criticized for allowing tourists to kill lions. In cases where the
animals are endangered, almost everyone agrees that this type of hunting should be banned. However, people are
much more divided about a recent situation in the U. S. The populations of white-tailed deer have gotten out of
control throughout the country because no animals kill them for food. Hunters want to increase the number of
white-tailed deer they’re already allowed to shoot. Because the deer cause car accidents, the hunters think they’re
actually saving human lives by killing the deer. And the deer are so overpopulated. Animal rights groups say that
deer-related accidents are actually caused by hunters who scare the deer onto roads. While that claim is hard to
confirm, this one isn’t: the number of deer-related car accidents can’t compare with the 200 hunting-related human
deaths every year. Finally, these groups believe that animals should be able to live freely in their environment,
without having to worry about being killed. Unfortunately, this last point is hard to argue when so many cows,
chickens, and pigs are killed for our dinners. The truth is that hunting is unlikely to stop anytime soon.

Near-death accidents and summit failures have not slowed down mountaineer Saray N’ kusi Khumalo. The Zambia-born mother of two holds a corporate job, hosts a podcast, has climbed some of the tallest mountains around the world, and still has the time to run a non- profit organization that focuses on education in Africa.
“My grandfather always used to say, ‘if you don’t live a life of service, that’s a life wasted, ” she said. In 2013, she founded Summits With A Purpose in South Africa. With every climb, she raises funds to help build schools and libraries. Khumalo is not going to just climb and take a selfie. She is going to climb and then make a difference.
Not long after her first-ever summit, she turned her eyes toward the world’s tallest peak: Mt. Qomolangma, located in the Himalayas. The first three climbs were tough and heart-breaking for Khumalo: She experienced everything from natural disasters to losing consciousness in the “death zone”, Qomolangma’s top stretch over 8, 000 meters above sea level, where oxygen is dangerously low.
On May 16, 2019 —her fourth bid —she succeeded, becoming the first Black African woman to reach the summit. In total, only eight of the 4,000 people who’ve ever summited Qomolangma are Black.
Khumalo is humbled by what she’s achieved so far, but she notes, “I don’t think that I’ve broken those stereotypes yet; there’s still a lot more work to be done,” adding that representation should extend beyond the mountain tops, too.
“It’s not just about Qomolangma; it is a gift that we need to leave for the next generation wherever we are,” she says, calling on her peers to step outside their comfort zone to show that Black people belong in all spaces.
24.What can we know about Khumalo from paragraph 1
A.She suffers from injuries. B.She is energetic.
C.She loves her family. D.She is struggling with life.
25.Why did she found Summits With A Purpose
A.To make herself rich. B.To fulfill her grandfather’s wish.
C.To raise funds for her climbing. D.To collect money for African education.
26.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Her life experiences. B.The success of her climbing.
C.The hardship in climbing. D.The conditions of the Qomolangma’s top.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To introduce a mountaineer pioneer. B.To show respect for mountaineers.
C.To tell the history of mountain climbing. D.To attract more people to conquer Mt. Qomolangma.

When you encounter animals, do you wonder what they’re thinking Seeing a newborn lamb or a cute puppy might arouse happy emotions (情感) in us, but what are they thinking Does the look on their face and how they behave indicate how they’re feeling - or are they feeling nothing at all
Humans have a complex range of feelings, but it’s hard to tell what’s going on inside the heads of animals. Some of us own dogs, because they are good companions, are loyal and seem to connect with us. We might even think they love us. Professor Kim Bard, an expert in comparative developmental psychology from the University of Portsmouth, told the BBC: “We have a few studies now that actually show scientifically that some dogs will respond when their owner - but not a stranger - pretends to cry.” The empathetic ability of cats, however, is harder to work out.
Other non-domesticated (非驯养的) animals might have feelings too. Giraffes and whales, for example, are known to experience sadness when someone in their group dies. It’s believed that even tiny creatures like insects might have emotions as well. Research is beginning to show they experience a wide range of feelings. Kim says “they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would.”
Dr Barbara J King, Emerita Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, told the BBC: “If we understand the profound depths of emotions animals can feel, this should make us question the existence of zoos and slaughterhouses (屠宰场) around the world, and rethink those systems. It does seem all creatures feel emotion, but what is not clear is whether they feel the same way as us.”
28. What’s the purpose of raising questions in the first paragraph
A. To entertain. B. To inspire. C. To attract. D. To persuade.
29. What do the underlined words “empathetic ability” in paragraph 2 mean
A. The ability to respond to others’ questions. B. The ability to understand others’ feelings.
C. The ability to stay calm when facing danger. D. The ability to share work with their owners.
30. What’s the importance of the research, according to Barbara
A. It may reduce the times of people visiting zoos. B. It may change the food chain of the whole world.
C. It may cause zoos and slaughterhouses to disappear. D. It may lead people to reconsider animals’ well-being.
31. How do the researchers sound when talking about the issue
A. Careful. B. Certain. C. Critical. D. Regretful.
D
The artificial-intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has shaken educators since its November release. New York City public schools have banned it from their networks and school devices. There is, perhaps surprisingly, one subject area that doesn’t seem threatened. It turns out that ChatGPT is quite bad at maths.
“I’m not hearing maths instructors express concern about ChatGPT,” said Paul von Hippel, a professor at the University of Texas who studies data science and statistics. “I’m not sure it’s useful for maths at all, which feels strange because maths was the first-use case for the artificial-intelligence devices.”
ChatGPT’s struggle with maths is inherent in this type of AI, known as a large language model. It scans a large amount of text from across the web and develops a model that might be extremely effective for writing grammatically correct responses to essay requirement, but not for solving a maths problem.
In an e-mail, I asked Debarghya Das, a search-engine engineer, why ChatGPT gets some simple questions right but others completely wrong. “Maybe the right analogy (类比) is if you ask a room of people, who have no idea what maths is but have read many hieroglyphics (象形文字), ‘What comes after 2+2,’ they might say, ‘Usually, we see a 4,’ That’s what ChatGPT is doing.” But, he adds, “Maths isn’t just a series of hieroglyphics. It’s the process of calculating.”
Another reason that maths instructors are less anxious about this innovation is that they have been here before. The field was upended for the first time decades ago with the general availability of computers and calculators.
“Maths has had the biggest revolution based on machinery of any mainstream subject,” said Conrad Wolfram, the strategic director of Wolfram Research. “In the real world, since computers came along, have maths, science and engineering gotten conceptually simpler No, completely the opposite. We’re asking harder and harder questions, going up a level.”
Eventually, AI will probably get to the point where its maths answers are not only confident but correct. A pure large language model might not be up for the job, but the technology will improve. In general, however, AI, like computers, will likely ultimately be most useful for those who already know a field well. They know the questions to ask, how to identify the shortcomings and what to do with the answer. A tool, in other words, is for those who know the most maths, not the least.
32.What does the underlined word “inherent” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Important. B.Practical. C.Limited. D.Natural.
33.What can we know from Debarghya’s reply
A.Calculating requires some knowledge of hieroglyphics.
B.ChatGPT is good at solving mathematical questions by analogy.
C.Reading hieroglyphics prevents ChatGPT solving maths questions.
D.ChatGPT’s response is based on language models instead of calculations.
34.What can be inferred from maths instructors’ calmness about ChatGPT
A.ChatGPT is useful to identify maths mistakes.
B.Technical revolution made maths easier to understand.
C.New technology will end up pushing the limits of maths.
D.ChatGPT has been banned from networks and school devices.
35.As for AI, which would the author probably agree with
A.It will play the largest role for professionals in a field.
B.It will become confident to solve all the maths problems.
C.It will turn the maths field over again just like computers.
D.It will take the jobs from humans as the technology improves.

Jumping rope is popular but we tend to ignore (忽视) its benefits. ____36____ A study found that college men who spent 10 minutes jumping rope daily for six weeks improved their cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness just as much as college men who spent thirty minutes jogging for the same time. Here are some benefits of jumping rope.
____37____
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves. ____38____ It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. ____39____ As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. ____40____ Jump to some music or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
A. Burns calories
B. Improves muscles
C. It benefits us not only physically but also mentally.
D. You can quickly swing the rope twice within each jump.
E. It may even be more effective than other forms of exercise.
F. Jumping rope forces you to move your upper and lower body together.
G. So jumping rope helps you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.
