Unit 5 Music
A
A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology took a closer look at music in sports, specifically how listening to music could affect one's overall performance.
Researchers asked 150 volunteers to throw a ball into a basket. For the first stage of the study, participants threw the ball from a fixed point. They threw the ball while listening to music of their choice, while not listening to music, or while listening to music that the researchers selected. For the second stage they were able to choose where to stand when throwing the ball and performed the same activity with the various music choices.
The study found that listening to music, whether it was music of the volunteer's choice or a song chosen for them, did not make the participants more or less likely to get the ball in the basket. It had no effect. What it did do was increase self-esteem and make the study participants more likely to take risks, especially for males who were allowed to choose their own music.
The results suggest that music may pump you up. And it may even help you work out harder and longer than you would without it. But no matter what song you listen to, it's not going to help you get that ball into the basket.
Another study took a detailed look at how music pace might affect exercise. Researchers found that listening to high-pace music makes people feel like they're working out less while also benefiting their bodies more.
Listening to high-pace music while exercising resulted in the highest heart rate compared with not listening to music. This means that the exercise seemed like less effort, but it was more beneficial in terms of enhancing physical fitness.
The study found that the beneficial effects of high-pace music were greatest for people who were walking or running and were felt the least for those who were doing high-intensity exercises such as weightlifting.

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ “Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
4.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
5.Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
6.What does Titterton need to practise

C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
7.Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worse page turner”
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

"What is the story of your piano " a new friend asked over dinner. My piano sits in the corner of my small living room.
My piano has a story "All pianos have stories," she said. Suddenly, my piano's story came flooding out of me as if I'd always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood. I started with the recorder and moved on to the stringed instrument like the violin and the guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.
I grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. Despite our poor childhood, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I were always fed with love. I can't remember which birthday it was when my mother spared the money to buy me a doll. Of course, by then I'd grown out of wanting dolls, but she worked too hard to know that, and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift that she loved me enough to buy for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision: to work towards the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. Finally I chose to stop piano lessons.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade—until my son was born. He showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons. I played that piano through my son—though the guitar was finally his instrument of choice.
I've come to realize that for my career, I've let all personal pleasures fall away. I figured I'd get back to playing the piano when I retired. Maybe it's time to get that piano retuned(重新调音), this time for myself, before it's too late to enjoy. Maybe that's something we all should do right now.
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano

"We can't keep this rabbit," I told my husband, as he stood there holding it. He had found the rabbit outside a medical center an hour earlier. It was clear that someone had given it up. Our dog, Autumn, stretched(伸长) her neck to look at the rabbit in my husband's hands.
We agreed the rabbit could spend the night in our back yard, and I would try to find a new home for it the next day. Autumn followed me as I put a bowl of water and lettuce(莴苣) near some bushes, where she lived and played.
"Don't worry," I told Autumn. "This yard is owned by you, and you don't have to share it with a rabbit." We went back into the house and locked the rabbit outside. My husband was worried about the rabbit's safety all night.
The next morning, Autumn and I checked on the rabbit. Suddenly, the rabbit rushed from under the bushes and directly attacked Autumn. He ran in big circles around my big but gentle dog, as if to say, "I'm the boss here. You might be bigger, but you're not going to hurt me."
Autumn looked as if she had no idea what had just happened. Since she was a hunting dog(猎狗) by nature, I expected her to run after the rabbit, but no, it was the rabbit that ran after her.
In fact, just one strong shake of the head or neck from Autumn could scare off the rabbit and make him not dare to hang around her. However, instead of hurting the rabbit, Autumn made the rabbit's effort to show his power a game. She seemed to enjoy being run after.

A
1.答案:A
根据第二段最后一句“For the second stage they were able to choose where to stand when throwing the ball and performed the same activity with the various music choices.” 故选A。
根据第五段第二句“Researchers found that listening to high-pace music makes people feel like they're working out less while also benefiting their bodies more.”
B
4.答案:A
根据第一段中“but I've learnt to read music(但是我已经学会了识谱)”可知一个翻乐谱的人应该学会识谱,故答案为A项。
根据第三段中“A lot of skills are needed for the job.(这份工作需要大量的技巧。)”
根据第四段中“and each pianist has their own style of 'nodding' to indicate a page turn(每个钢琴家都有自己的‘点头’风格来示意翻页)”可推断Titterton需要识别钢琴家发出的“点头”信号,才能准确地翻页,故答案为B项。
根据最后一段中“He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: 'Turn, turn!'
由第四段中的“Despite our poor childhood, my siblings and I were always fed with love.”
根据第五段中的“I had to make a decision: to work towards the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music.” I've come to realize that for my career, I've let all personal pleasures fall away.”
10.答案:A
根据倒数第二段中的“I figured I'd get back to playing the piano when I retired.” 故选A。
13.答案:A
根据第三段第四句“To China, Mr. Fu's recognition in a well-known international competition was evidence that the country could stand on its own artistically in the West.” 故选A。
14.答案:A
故选A。
根据最后一段中的“First you must be a person, then an artist, and then a musician, and only then can you be a pianist”可知,首先你必须成为一个人,然后是艺术家,然后是音乐家,只有那时你才能成为钢琴家,由此判断,成为一个钢琴家需要各方面的品质。
1-5.CDBCB 6-10.ABBAA; 11-15.CBABD
6. 根据下文“I thought I would do better than before”可知,作者经过多次练习后,最终对自己的声音有了自信。故选A。
11. 根据前一句“There's really nothing else to lose.”
12. 根据后文“That's something I would never have done before.”
13. 根据后文“how much people liked my singing”可知人们非常喜欢作者唱歌,这让作者感到惊喜。故选A。
15. 据前文“After that, I started singing to myself”及“how much people liked my singing”可知,唱歌使作者更加外向。故选D。
第二节
答案:①to be②on③was diagnosed④discouraged⑤called⑥What⑦Listening⑧relief⑨a⑩periods
feel honoured to do sth.
have an impact on...对…… 故填on。
由时间状语two years ago可知应用一般过去时;主语I与diagnose之间为被动关系,应用被动语态,且主语为I,故填was diagnosed。
a sense of...
Good morning, everyone,
My name is Li Hua. When it comes to music, we have our own stories. As for me, music actually offered me enough power to overcome difficulties. When failing in the mid-term examination, I felt so upset that I refused to communicate with my friends, even my parents. When I heard some inspiring songs, which gave me confidence, I gradually ignored the failure and spared no effort to study. Finally, I made great progress in the final examination. From my experience, I hope that you can obtain the power which music offers to achieve your own dreams.
Thanks for your listening.

Paragraph 1:
When the rabbit ran after her, she just ran in circles to avoid him. We watched from the kitchen window as an unusual friendship began to form. Soon the rabbit realized Autumn wasn't a possible danger to him. Even with the power to kill him, she allowed him to share her place. A few days passed and we realized a new home was not necessary because we didn't want to separate the pair.
Paragraph 2:
As this friendship grew allowed the rabbit to come in our house more. My husband even created an area in the house for him to sleep and eat. Every night, I would put him into his area while Autumn just followed me upstairs to sleep in our bedroom. Each morning, I took him outside to the back yard for the day, where he played with Autumn, running after each other. It was really a lovely and happy scene.
