Unit 1 Teenage Life
A
Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her friends online. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee's online friendship could be making her lonely That's what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendship.
Could this be true During your parents' childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teenager sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of his time is spent on social media platforms(平台) like Instagram and Facebook.
In fact, in many ways, online communication enables friendship to be stronger. "There's obviously a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other," says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendship. "If we are constantly checking out our virtual world, we will be addicted and have little time for our real-world friendship," says Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today's kids might mistake the "friends" on social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don't need someone to like your pictures or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To summarize the text. B.To tell something about true friends.
C.To bring up a topic. D.To encourage online friendship.
2.What does the underlined part "in the flesh" mean in Paragraph 3
A.In any case. B.In person. C.In a hurry. D.In advance.
3.What is Katie's attitude towards online communication
A.Positive. B.Unconcerned. C.Confused. D.Worried.
B
The winter break is just about to end. Soon we will be back at school. It's with both happiness and sadness. I look very much forward to seeing my friends and starting practice again, but it also means I’m officially(正式地) half way through the exchange yean With school starting there are new things to try out and experience. For example, I’m starting a new sport, Track. It’s similar to Cross Country, which I did from August till November.
Being here for half a year now, I can easily tell the differences between my two schools. The hardest or most different part for me was to have the same schedule every day here. Honestly, I prefer to have different classes every day, as I did in my home country. However, I have fallen in love with the Friday football games. Football is one of my favorite sports now. Before I came,I knew nothing about it Now I love it, especially to watch it with my host parents. I have also been so lucky to go to two college football games.
Before I left school in December, I had a couple of tests called Mid-term Test. They all went pretty smooth, mostly because I didn’t have too many hard classes. My favorite class was English, and also my hardest. Personally I really liked English, where I could write essays (文章),challenge writing skills and improve English talking.
Only four days of winter break is left. A part of me wants to be on a break forever, and the other part expects to get started again, start a new sport and see my friends and classmates.
4.Why does the author feel sad before school starts again
A. Her homework is not finished. B. The exchange year will end soon.
C. Her school life will get harder. D. The new sport no longer attracts her.
5.How does the school in the author's home country differ from the one she is in now
A. The courses are richer. B. The teachers are kinder.
C. The meals are healthier. D. The holidays are longer.
6.What does the author enjoy doing most with the host family
A. Having a talk in English. B. Playing video games.
C. Watching football matches. D. Visiting her relatives.
7.What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to
A. Classes. B. Tests. C. Games. D. Students.
C
"I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless," said Lisa, a confused teenager from a loving home. "It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What's wrong with me "
Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their ages or characters are—even the most outgoing, popular and wealthiest—experience loneliness at least sometimes. It's healthy and natural to want to be with people who care about us. After all, we've all heard “No man is an island.” Actually, we all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explained that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection(拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We adopt a safer way and prefer to wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we've got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures(措施).
Be willing to take the initiative(主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don't wait for her/him to make the first move. Get close to her/him and begin a conversation. Let her/him know in a non-aggressive(无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her/him.
Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her/him. And don't let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You'll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance.
Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she/he likes to door asking about her/his family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied to with "yes" or "no". For example, don't ask "Do you have a dog " Instead, say, "So, tell me about your pets." Avoiding asking "yes" or "no" questions obviously makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.
8.Why does the author begin the text with Lisa's worry
A.To set up a sad background. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To share Lisa's pain. D.To teach readers a lesson.
9.What can be the risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage
A.Being refused by others. B.Putting ourselves in danger.
C.Being treated in a rude way. D.Losing interest in communicating.
10.What can we know from Paragraph 5
A.Popular people are often easy-going.
B.Just waiting for chances will help you make friends.
C.A proper manner is important in making friends.
D.Shy people are hard to talk to.
11.Why does the author suggest not asking "yes" or "no" questions
A.It is considered unfriendly.
B.It will make a bad first impression.
C.It shows the poor quality of the speaker.
D.It isn't good for keeping a conversation going.

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids' teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, "Why can't I make a healthy candy that's good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it " With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad's permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product—-CanCandy.
As CanCandy's success grows, so does Moore's credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she's also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile, with her parents' help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn't driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilieCandy's profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.
12.How did Moore react to her dad's warning
A.She argued with him. B.She tried to find a way out.
C.She paid no attention. D.She chose to consult dentists.
13.What is special about CanCandy
A.It is beneficial to dental health. B.It is free of sweeteners.
C.It is sweeter than other candies. D.It is produced to a dentists' recipe.
14.What does Moore expect from her business
A.To earn more money. B.To help others find smiles.
C.To make herself stand out. D.To beat other candy companies.
15.What can we learn from Alice Moore's story
A.Fame is a great thirst of the young.

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house. When the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me.
One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed (排练) my lines so hard with me. But no matter how easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (旁白的) part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her words, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my pain. Instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤蔓) was turning green. Under the huge trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in the grass in bunch, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling it up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it ” She asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

A
根据画线部分前面的“During your parents' childhoods...”和画线部分后面的“Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones.”
3.答案:A
由第五段中的“In fact, in many ways...with each other”可知,事实上,在很多方面,在线交流可以使朋友关系更加牢固,Katie认为,这明显有积极的影响。 故选A。
B
The winter break is just about to end. Soon we will be back at school. It's with both happiness and sadness. I look very much forward to seeing my friends and starting practice again, but it also means I'm officially(正式地) half way through the exchange year.(寒假就要结束了。
5.答案:A
Honestly, I prefer to have different classes every day, as I did in my home country.(老实说, 我喜欢每天上不同的课,就像我在祖国一样。) 故选A。
Football is one of my favorite sports now. Before I came, I knew nothing about it. Now I love it, especially to watch it with my host parents.(足球是我现在最喜欢的运动之一。
Before I left school in December, I had a couple of tests called Mid-term Test. They all went pretty smooth, mostly because I didn't have too many hard classes.(在我12月离开学校之前,我参加了几次叫做期中考试的考试。 A.Classes班级; .B.Tests考试; C.Games比赛; D.Students学生。故选B。
C
9.答案:A
因为我们通常害怕被拒绝……”,由此可推断此处的risk=rejection,故选A,A项中的“Being refused”与文中的“rejection”呼应。
根据第二段第五句“So she desired to get round the warning, ‘Why can't I make a healthy candy that's good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it’ ”可知,Moore想要找到解决办法,因此答案为B项(她试图找到出路)。
13.答案:A
根据文章第三段第一句“With her dad's permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly.”
本题题干意为:Moore对她的事业有什么期待 根据文章倒数第二段的最后一句“She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.”

根据段首的“Work hard in school.”

10.根据前面的“pushed the ‘Stop Request’ button(按了下车按钮)”和后面的“I got off(我下车了)”可知公交车停了下来(stopped)。故选D。
故选A。in a while过一会儿;in a circle在一个圈里;in a way在某种程度上。

答案:①making②is③an④to spend⑤to⑥who/that⑦activities⑧friendly⑨what⑩will be accepted
mean doing sth.
play a/an...part
be expected to do sth. 故填to spend。
the path to..
a person为先行词,从句缺少主语,指人,故填who或that。

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as usual. “You just haven’t been ready for the stage performance.” Seeing the sadness on my face soften a little, she added, “Why not take the narrator’s part as an opportunity to be familiar with the stage ” Her encouragement calmed me down gradually, and I began to accept the narrator’s part was of vital significance. Soon it was the big day. At first I was still nervous, but then I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, hoping it would be my lucky charm.
Paragraph 2
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily at me. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I often recall our walk in the yard. Her smile and her words of wisdom have stayed with me and shaped me into who I am now! And this is perhaps the best gift that I’ve ever received in my life.
