A
A little knowledge and a few precautionary measures(预防措施) can greatly increase your chances of surviving an earthquake. The key is education and preparation in advance. Or when it happens, it is too late that you take a booklet to learn then. The earthquake safety tips below will not make you an expert. However, they could make a life-saving difference if you find yourself in an earthquake situation.
Before the Earthquake
Teach all members of your family about earthquake safety. This includes the action you should take when an earthquake occurs, the safe places in a room such as under a strong desk, along interior walls, and places to avoid such as near windows, large mirrors, hanging objects, heavy furniture and fireplaces.
During the Earthquake
If you are indoors, stay there. Quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk, under a strong table, or along an interior wall.
If you are outdoors, move to an open area where falling objects are unlikely to strike you. Stay away from buildings, telegraph poles(电线杆) and trees.
If you are driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges and overpasses(立交桥), or under power lines, trees and large signs. Stay in your car.
After the Earthquake
Check for damage. If your building is badly damaged, you should leave it quickly until it has been inspected by a safety professional. If you smell or hear a gas leak(煤气泄漏), get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report the leak to the gas company and fire department. Do not use any electrical appliances because a tiny spark could make the gas burn suddenly.
1.What is the key to surviving an earthquake
A.Learning some tips when an earthquake happens.
B.Consulting the experienced survivors.
C.Leaving where earthquakes often happen.
D.Education and preparation in advance.
2.What do telegraph poles mean when an earthquake happens
A.Help. B.Energy. C.Safety. D.Danger.
3.What should you do when you find your house is badly damaged after the earthquake
A.Stay where you are. B.Phone 119.
C.Leave the house quickly. D.Find your dear possessions.

Efforts were underway in Bangladesh to deliver food and drinking water to millions of people struggling after a heavy rain led to flooding, which struck a quarter of the country. There are around 3.5million Bangladeshis at risk of river flooding every year according to a 2015 report by the World Bank.
On Wednesday, at least 17 of the country's 64 districts(地区), mostly in the northern and north-eastern Sylhet, were suffering from the natural disaster. Government officials said at least 36 people had been killed and about 4.5 million people had been stuck so far. The floods also caused damage to agriculture(农业), electricity, and clean water supply.
Sylhet is among the worst affected, with several areas without electricity. "Many people are in great need of food and drinking water," said Enam Ahmed, 45, living in the worst-hit Sunmaganj district. "There is water everywhere but no drinking water. Flood shelters are filled with people but they are not getting enough food," he said.
The situation in Bangladesh has been worsened by rainwater falling down from the surrounding hills of India's Meghalaya state, which received more than 970 mm (about 38 inches) of rain on Sunday, according to a government report.
"The flood situation in the three Barak valley districts continues to be very serious. Army rescuers have evacuated thousands of trapped people to safe places. 14 rescue teams with more than 70 boats and over 400 men have been pressed into action in the heavily flooded districts," said a local flood control official. About 5.5 million people have been displaced, about 3.7 million of whom are staying in government-run temporary(临时的) shelters on higher ground.
Locals in the flood-affected areas said they had never seen such serious floods before.

C.The number of districts in the country. D.The damage caused by the floods.
5.What do we know about the flood shelters
A.There is a crying need for food. B.They can provide enough clean water.
C.They are too old to hold people. D.There are few villagers staying inside.
6.What does the underlined word "displaced" in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Called on. B.Checked out. C.Moved away. D.Sent in.
7.What can we infer from the text

C.The disaster is the biggest ever. D.Rivers nationwide are at risk.
C
In December 2004, I had just become a professional photographer and was working on a project about communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads(海上游牧民族). I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe(部落) on a small island in southern Thailand. We didn't share a language and depended on body language to communicate.
I went to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set out with a group of six fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked different, with the water totally still.
About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea, one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami wave speeding through the ocean. We were in shock.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren't out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared.
The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance the boat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn't. Any movement would make the boat out of balance. Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed to swerve(突然转向) up and onto the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I've been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the person who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains "the one that got away"—I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life.
8.What happened before the author set out with the fishermen
A.The captain wanted to cancel the trip. B.He noticed something unusual.
C.They saw a white spot in the distance. D.It looked as if it was about to rain.
9.When did the author start to feel frightened
A.When fishermen on the boat felt nervous.
B.When he realized they were trapped.
C.When the boat was about to be hit.
D.When the boat shook violently.
10.What was the author doing when the tsunami wave hit the boat
A.Helping the captain swerve. B.Taking a photo of the wave.
C.Trying not to move. D.Reaching for his backpack.
11.What did the author learn from his experience
A.We should have the courage to take risks.
B.Opportunity never knocks twice.
C.Life is too short to be wasted.
D.Sometimes regrets in life can save us.
D
The tornadoes that recently hit the U.S. are some of the most destructive and deadly in history. The deaths in Kentucky, the hardest stricken state, reached 80 on Monday, with dozens still not included. The scale of destruction and timing of the tornadoes being so late in the year—most tornadoes happen in the spring and summer—are leading to discussion about how climate change may have affected this deadly disaster.
"In my 40 years as a meteorologist(气象学家), this is one of the most shocking weather events I've ever experienced," says Jeff Masters, at Yale Climate Connections. "Watching these storms on Friday night, my thought was, 'Is no season safe ' Extreme tornadoes in December. That was mind blowing to me."
Unlike heat waves and floods, the connection between a warming world and tornadoes is complex(复杂的) and uncertain. Scientists have several ideas about how tornado behavior may change. Tornadoes in December are possible. But it remains to be seen whether climate change will strengthen or increase the frequency(频率) of tornadoes.
According to NOAA's data, there has been a recorded increase in the number of observed tornadoes since 1950, which experts believe is largely because of better technology such as Doppler radar. There's been no observed increase in the frequency of major tornadoes over time. For example, 59 of the most serious F5 tornadoes in the U.S. have happened since 1950. But if the storm that destroyed Kentucky turns out to have been an F5, it will have been the first since 2013—bringing to an end the longest recorded period so far.
"However, given the general influence of global warming on the atmosphere, it makes sense that it should be having an effect on tornadoes too," says Victor Gensini, an extreme weather expert at Northern Illinois University. "Rather than asking, 'Did climate change cause this tornado ', it's better to operate under the thought that climate change did play a role," he says.
While the science on climate change and tornadoes isn't clear, meteorologists are predicting conditions benefiting tornadoes will continue this month. "To be honest, I'm worried about the rest of the year. I don't think we're out of the woods yet," Gensini says.
12.What is the difference between the recent tornadoes and the ones in the past
A.The recent tornadoes caused no deaths.
B.The recent tornadoes happened in December.
C.The recent tornadoes hit only Kentucky.
D.The recent tornadoes caught people unprepared.
13.What can be known from Paragraph 3
A.Waves and floods often follow tornadoes.
B.There is agreement on how tornadoes may change.
C.Climate change will make tornadoes the most deadly disaster.
D.Scientists are unsure how climate change influences tornadoes.
14.Which of the following statements may Victor Gensini agree with
A.The tornadoes have nothing to do with climate warming.
B.The science on climate change is advancing very quickly.
C.Climate change most likely has an effect on tornadoes.
D.Climate change will make tornadoes much less frequent.
15.What does the underlined phrase "out of the woods" mean in the last paragraph
A.Out of date. B.Out of order.
C.Out of danger. D.Out of control.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. Once, I was called at 3 a. m. to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for the light in a window. Many drivers would wait a short while, and then drive away. But I always went to the door to find passengers. They might need my help.
So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute.” answered a weak and elderly voice. I could hear the sound of something being dragged across the floor. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me, with a small suitcase. “Would you carry my bag out to the car ” she said. “I’d like a few moments alone. Then, could you come back and help me ”
I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm, we walking slowly toward the cab. She kept thanking me for my kindness “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.”
When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown ”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered. “I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to the nursing home.” I saw her eyes shining with tears. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued, “The doctor says I am too old to live alone.”
I quietly turned off the meter (计价器). “Which road do you want me to take ” I asked. “Take me to Sunrise Street, please. That’s where I was born,” replied the old lady.
For hours, we drove through the city. The old lady talked a lot about her good childhood life in Sunrise Street happily. But sometimes, she also sighed about her tough life now. I determined to do something for her. Soon, we arrived at the nursing home before we realized it.

根据题干中的feel frightened定位到第四段中的“I began to feel really scared.”。根据该信息前面的“But we weren't out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck.”
第二段中的“Extreme tornadoes in December.”
我认为我们还没out of the woods。”可知Gensini很担心,觉得人们还未摆脱龙卷风的危险,out of the woods 在此处意为“out of danger(脱离危险)”。故选C。A.
However, sometimes they even happen months later.
1-5.CBDCB; 6-10.ABADD; 11-15.BACCB
故选A。
3. 根据“they'd remain with them until the danger passed”可知,19个新生儿不可能离开,医院的工作人员决定要陪在这些孩子身边。故选D。
Members at the hospital were 3 that they'd remain with them"可知,陪伴孩子的是医院里的工作人员。故选C。
5. 根据第一段中的“the city of Lake Charles”可知,Lake Charles是个城市。 故选A。
故选A。
故选A。
答案:①powerful②countries③which/that④causing⑤at⑥is expected⑦higher⑧Though/Although⑨damaged⑩to deliver
stand at sth. 故填at。
“the number of+复数名词”作主语,谓语动词用单数;the number of deaths和expect(预计)之间为被动关系,应用被动语态;结合前面的“are still missing”可知此处应用一般现在时,故填is expected。
make it difficult to do sth. 故填to deliver。
第三节
答案:
Loving Parcels
In order to help the students in the flood area, our school held a "Loving Parcels" donation activity last week.
All of the teachers and students took an active part in the activity. They donated their clothes, books, and schoolbags and all of them were badly needed. In addition, they also wrote down the best wishes to those students on cards, which would be collected and delivered to the schools that were affected by the flood.
Not only did the activity help us express our care for the students and send our sincere wishes to them but it also taught us that we should value what we have.
答案:
For hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived, the place where she danced as a girl. As the sun was rising, she asked me to go to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you ” she asked, reaching for her purse. “Oh, you owe me nothing,” I replied. Her eyes widened in surprise. I could see her doubt on her face. “I’m on my way home, you see. I’m very happy to have you as my companion on my way home, so I can offer you a free ride. Besides, I am grateful to you for sharing your happy childhood with me during the whole trip,” I explained. Hearing this, the old lady hugged me with great delight and got off the cab. Staring at the lonely figure walking slowly towards the nursing home, I decided to visit her regularly in the coming days.
