Taj Mahal, India
Standing on the banks of the Yamuna River, the Taj Mahal (239 feet) stands for love. The name “Taj Mahal” was from the name of Shah Jahan's wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Civita, the dying town
Some 120 kilometers north of Rome, street signs along the road tell drivers they're bound for "the dying town" Civita di Bagnoregio. The village stands on a declining plateau(高原). It has gone through landslides(泥石流), earthquakes, and erosion(腐蚀) since humans' first settlement about 2, 500 years ago. Nowadays Civita has been reduced to only 90 by 150 meters.
In the Middle Ages, the size of the plateau was three times its size nowadays, and the population was over 3,000, yet the river surrounding Civita gradually made the town collapse from the bottom up. Since 1695, when a destructive earthquake took place in Civita, many people have been forced to escape from their hometown, and the population there has never recovered. By the 1920s, there were merely 600 residents in the town. Currently, there are only about 10 residents. What a small population it has!
The survival of Civita is uncertain. However, as the news that the town is about to disappear started to widely spread, more and more people wanted to visit it. Now up to 10,000people visit Civita per day. And there is doubt as to whether it will die. The flood of people and money leads to natives longing for the rescue of the town.
Yet the actual situation in Civita is that there are no grocery stores, hardware stores, or convenience stores. People living there can only have access to a handful of restaurants and tourist shops. Besides, they have to get supplies through a narrow, 300-meter-long bridge that connects them to the outside world.
Today, Civita is pursuing a UNESCO World Heritage designation in order to earn official recognition of its landscape and adaptability to nature. Recently, the town presented a 242-page document to UNESCO, hoping that it could help strengthen Civita's role as a site of historical and cultural significance. Also, Civita's UNESCO team plans to create tourist attractions in the surrounding towns. If Civita recovers successfully, other towns in the same situation could find a direction based on its experience.
4.What has made Civita become smaller
A.The inconvenient transport. B.The natural conditions.
C.The settlement of humans. D.The decrease of the population.
5.Why do so many visitors flood in Civita every day
A.Because they want to rescue it.
B.Because they are attracted by its scenery.
C.Because they are interested in its natives.
D.Because they want to catch the last chance to see it.
6.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The stores in the town. B.The daily activities of local people.
C.The appearance of the town. D.The living conditions in the town.
7.Which word can best describe the possible future of Civita
A.Unchangeable. B.Hopeful. C.Disappointing. D.Doubtful.
C
Measuring about 13,170 miles long, the Great Wall of China is no doubt the longest man-made project on earth. It was once widely believed that it could be seen from space. Some media even reported with affected seriousness, "The biggest building the astronauts could see from space is the wall, which looks very much like a black worm." Consequently, this statement has gone deep into people's minds and become an honor that Chinese people have enjoyed for years.
Is the Great Wall truly visible from space Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut who was lifted into outer space by the spacecraft Shenzhou V, gave a definite answer: No". Yang's negative response might put out a fair number of people's passion. But it powerfully corrected the misconception. The wall is indeed majestic, but you won't see it from space
In fact, Neil Alden Armstrong, the American astronaut who first set foot on the moon in 1969, was asked many times whether or not he had seen the Great Wall from the moon. Recently from a sound recording announced by NASA's Johnson Space Center, Armstrong said that he had seen the continents, lakes and blue spots(斑点) touched with red. But he could not make out any man-made object on earth from the moon.
The Great Wall is narrow and irregular. In space, something irregular is hard to observe. Measuring about 10 metres wide on average, it easily merges(融入) into the surrounding environment. It is totally invisible at a height of 196,850 feet with the naked eye. To watch the wall on the moon is like seeking for a single hair from about 2,688 metres away. To say an astronaut can see it from space is obviously not true.
However, some people introduced an idea to make the Great Wall visible from space. If we install(安装) bright spotlights(聚光灯) on the wall, astronauts will see the lights at night. But this suggestion has not been carried out by scientific experiments.
8.Which is right about the statement “the Great Wall can be seen from space”
A.The news media cast doubt on it.
B.There was much evidence for it.
C.Astronauts played a trick on Chinese people.
D.The Chinese had belief in it for a long time.
9.What does the underlined word “majestic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Invisible. B.Bright. C.Grand. D.Visible.
10.As Armstrong once said, what did he see from the moon
A.The Great Wall. B.Bright spotlights.
C.Places painted blue. D.Large area of land.
11.How does the author prove a point in Paragraph 4
A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples.
C.By classifying facts. D.By drawing conclusions.
D
Scientists in Italy have discovered a fast-food restaurant in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. The remains help with the understanding of foods that were popular among Pompeii's citizens. The Pompeii Archaeological Park's chief Massimo Osanna said Saturday that about 80 such fast-food restaurants have been found at Pompeii. But the latest find is the first hot-food-drink restaurant-known as a thermopolium—that was completely discovered. Plant and animal specialists are still examining remains from the site.
They discovered a large counter area with wide holes on its top. The counter held deep containers for hot food. The front of the counter included works of art showing ducks and chickens. The images brightened the restaurant and also likely served as food advertisements. Another painting showed a dog on a leash. Valeria Amoretti is an anthropologist at Pompeii. She said early studies confirmed "how the painted images represented, at least in part, the foods and beverages(饮料) effectively sold inside".
At the bottom of a wine container were remains of ground fava beans. In ancient times, the beans were added to wine for taste and to lighten its color. Massimo Osanna added, "We know what they were eating that day." He was talking about the day of Pompeii's destruction(毁灭) in 79 A.D. "The food remains are examples of what's popular with the common folk," Osanna said. He added that wealthy Romans did not eat such street food.
One surprise find at the dig was the complete skeleton(骨架) of a dog. The scientists involved in the dig noted "it was not a large muscular dog like that painted on the counter". Amoretti said that instead it was a very small adult dog, whose height at shoulder level was 20 to 25 centimeters, and that it is rare to find remains of such small dogs from ancient times. The find may show that Romans at the time were carrying out "selective breeding(选择育种)" of dogs.
12.According to the passage, the people of Pompeii _____.
A.seldom ate fast food B.never had hot food
C.often visited fast-food restaurants D.always ate at their own homes
13.What might the works of art be used for
A.Showing the owner's interest.
B.Making the restaurant full of art atmosphere.
C.Showing the benefits of eating hot food.
D.Advertising the restaurant's special foods.
14.What do the food remains represent according to Massimo Osanna
A.The common folks' favorite diet. B.Wealthy Romans' daily diet.
C.The common folks' popular beverages. D.The poorest Romans' daily diet.
15.What made scientists very surprised
A.The broken skeleton of a small dog. B.The skeleton of a large muscular dog.
C.Romans' selective-breeding of dogs. D.The painting of a dog on a leash.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn't wear boots; or rather, he didn't own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, "This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don't have any money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking clown to the street where the shops were. It wasn't easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光) of the setting sun's rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(一角硬币).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his offering ten-cent. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you."
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.

My club often gives lectures to let more people know that the preservation of the cultural heritage is of great significance.
As the organizer puts it, "It's our duty to protect the outstanding cultural heritage of our nation."

Paragraph 1 :
Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter. There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby's heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. "That will be ten cents, young man." the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true He wondered.
Paragraph 2 :
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands. Bobby backed off and then turned and ran. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. "Look, Mother, what have I got for you " Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. "Merry Christmas!" Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. Tearfully, Mother hugged her son in her arms. Standing in the bitter cold air, they somehow didn't feel cold at all.
