Owls(猫头鹰) can be found in many parts of the world. And today, one kind of owl, the barred owl(横斑林鸮), is causing a problem in forests of the northwestern United States. Barred owls are a large species native to eastern North America, but they began moving west at the start of the 20th century. In parts of the Pacific Northwest, barred owls are now causing a drop in the population of a kind of smaller and less aggressive(侵略的) bird: the northern spotted owl. The U.S. Geological Survey is doing something unusual to protect spotted owls: killing barred owls. As a member of the department, David Wiens has mixed feelings about the program. "It's a little unpleasant, I think, to go out killing owls," he says. "But we know that barred owls are really stronger than spotted owls and that their numbers are growing too fast, so it makes sense to do that."
It is a controversial(有争议的) program. "A decision not to kill the barred owl is a decision to make the spotted owl disappear," says Bob Sallinger, a director at the non-profit National Audubon Society in Portland, Oregon. However, Marc Bekoff, a professor of ecology(生态学) and biology at the University of Colorado Boulder, strongly disagrees with the experiment and says humans should find another way to help spotted owls.
If reducing the barred owl population improves the number of spotted owls, the U.S. Geological Survey may consider killing more barred owls as part of a longer-term effort. Enough success has been noted for the experiment to be extended to August of 2021.
1.Why are barred owls being killed
A.Because they are breaking the laws of nature.
B.Because they are killing each other to survive.
C.Because they are destroying large areas of forests.
D.Because they are putting the spotted owls in danger.
2.What is Wiens's attitude towards the program
A.Doubtful. B.Uncaring. C.Supportive. D.Negative.
3.Which is the best title for the text
A.New Ways to Help Forests B.How to Keep Ecological Balance
C.Killing One Species to Save Another D.Time to Protect Animals

The Matschie's tree kangaroo is one species of tree kangaroos, most of which are endangered. A tree kangaroo is about the size of a raccoon(浣熊) and weighs around 19 pounds. They live in the high canopy(树冠) of the rainforest, about 100 to 150 feet in the air. The Matschie's tree kangaroo is orange and brown with a face that looks like a teddy bear. They can jump 60 feet to the ground from trees without getting hurt.
In 1996, Dr. Lisa Dabek helped found the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program (TKCP). Now, 16 years later, though still endangered, the population of the Matschie's tree kangaroo is under control. Much of the success is because of the work of Dabek, the senior conservation scientist at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington, and director of TKCP.
According to Dabek, TKCP needed to cooperate(合作) with the local clans(家族), some of whom kill tree kangaroos for food or other reasons. Dabek said, "We and the clans reached an agreement. The clans would set aside a part of their land as a 'no hunting area'. But they could continue to hunt on their other land. In total they set aside 180,000 acres of land. They called this a 'Wildlife Bank'."
Animal behavior has always been interesting Dr. Dabek. She said, "When I was 8 years old, a friend and I wrote down what we wanted to be when we grew up and put it inside an envelope that we would open when we were teenagers. When I opened it, I was reminded that I wanted to be an animal trainer. And that is kind of what I am today."
4.What can we know about Matschie's tree kangaroos
A.They face the possibility of dying out.
B.They are the only species of tree kangaroos.
C.They are generally orange from head to foot.
D.They live at the bottom of trees in the rainforest.
5.Which one can describe Dabek's work in protecting the Matschie's tree kangaroos
A.Disappointing. B.Effective. C.Hopeless. D.Stressful.
6.What did local clans agree according to Paragraph 3
A.To leave all their land to the Matschie's tree kangaroos.
B.Not to hunt the Matschie's tree kangaroos in a certain area.
C.Not to hunt the Matschie's tree kangaroos at all.
D.To hunt the Matschie's tree kangaroos for special events.
7.What could be the best title of the passage

On Sunday, April 23, almost 50,000 athletes rushed to the streets to compete in the 37th London Marathon. While few were able to get even close to Daniel Wanjiru's 2:05:48 winning time, none were as slow as Tom Harrison, who crawled (爬) to the finish line, seven days later, on April 30.
However, a Metropolitan Police officer, who was dressed in a gorilla(大猩猩) suit, had a good reason for his slowness. He had completed the 26.2 miles on all fours to raise funds to help gorilla protection efforts in Africa. The 41-year-old who spent 8—10 hours on his hands and knees, covered about 4.5 miles each day before crashing at a friend's house for the night. To prevent his knees from blistering(起泡), he swapped crawling on hands and knees for loping(大步慢跑) along on hands and feet and took breaks every 100 to 200 meters. But the arduous crawl was well worth it.
Harrison, who crossed the finish line at 11:45 am, has raised over 37,000 ($47,800), far more than his original goal of 1,790 ($2,300), for the Gorilla Organization, whose efforts are mainly spent in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The much-needed funds will help train the communities near gorilla habitats to support themselves and make them rely less on selling wildlife meat fora living. The money will also help pay for ranger(护林员) services to monitor excess(过度的) hunting of the great apes. More importantly, Harrison hopes his six-day crawl will highlight the bad situation of the gorillas, whose numbers are decreasing at alarming rates, and encourage more people to help protect them.
While thrilled at the outcome, Harrison, Mr. Gorilla, is not done yet. He intends to continue his fundraising efforts at the annual Prudential Ride London cycling festival scheduled for the weekend of July 28—30, 2022.
8.Why did Tom Harrison crawl to the finish line
A.To improve his physical and mental health.
B.To collect money for the Gorilla Organization.
C.To win the title of the slowest marathon runner.
D.To advertise policies for Metropolitan Police.
9.What does the underlined word "arduous" mean in Paragraph 2
A.Tough. B.Funny. C.Harmful. D.Attractive.
10.What is the general aim of the Gorilla Organization
A.To help protect habitats for endangered gorillas.
B.To protect gorillas in some African countries.
C.To monitor and punish illegal hunting of gorillas.
D.To make people aware of the bad situation of gorillas.
11.Which word can best describe Tom Harrison
A.Strong. B.Hard-working. C.Kind. D.Smart.
D
The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, off the western coast of South America. They are a rocky, lonely spot, but they are also one of the most unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of the last giant tortoises(乌龟) left on Earth.
Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises go slowly around the rocks and sand of the islands. Strangely, each of these islands has its own particular kinds of tortoises. There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands, and each kind is slightly different from the other.
Hundreds of years ago, thousands of tortoises were around these islands. However, all that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived in 1535, crews would seize as many tortoises as they could. They would roll the tortoises onto their backs when they were brought onto the ships. The tortoises were completely helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used for soups and stews. Almost 100,000 tortoises were carried off in this way.
The tortoises faced other problems, too. Soon after the first ships, settlers arrived, bringing pigs, goats, donkeys, dogs and cats. All of these animals ruined life for the tortoises. Donkeys and goats ate all the plants that the tortoises usually fed on, while the pigs, dogs and cats ate thousands of baby tortoises each year. Within a few years, it was hard to find any tortoise eggs or even any baby tortoises.
Finally, in the 1950s, scientists decided that something must be done. The first part of their plan was to remove as many cats, dogs and other animals as they could from the islands. Next, they tried to make sure that more baby tortoises would be born. This slow, hard work continues today, and, thanks to it, the number of tortoises is now increasing every year. Perhaps these wonderful animals will not disappear after all.
12.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A.The Galapagos Islands are the biggest islands in the Pacific Ocean.
B.The giant tortoises have all left the Galapagos Islands already.
C.The giant tortoises made the Galapagos Islands unusual places.
D.People have built many homes for the giant tortoises on the islands.
13.What is special about the tortoises according to Paragraph 2
A.They weigh hundreds of pounds.
B.They move around very slowly.
C.There are different kinds of tortoises.
D.They are larger than the ones in other places.
14.Which of the following happened first
A.Sailors took tortoises aboard the ships.
B.Scientists decided to take measures to protect the tortoises.
C.Pigs, dogs and cats ate many baby tortoises.
D.Settlers brought other animals to the islands.
15.What happened soon after people brought animals to the islands
A.Tortoise eggs were kept in safe containers.
B.The animals ate the tortoises' food and eggs.
C.The tortoises continued to wander freely.
D.The tortoises fought against the other animals.

The Amazzon Rainforest: A Natural Treasure
Welcome to the Amazon rainforest. As the largest rainforest in the world, it plays an important role in maintaining the fine balance of the Earth's ecosystem.
The Amazon rainforest crosses eight countries. With an area of around 5.5 million square kilometres, the Amazon rainforest is more than half the size of China. The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is about 6,400 kilometres in length. On its journey from the mountains to the ocean the river supports many different ecosystems. ①_____
Of the 390,000 plant species known to man, more than 40,000 can be found in the Amazon. The forest's different levels support an unbelievable variety of wildlife. At the bottom, there is a system of roots beneath the ground. Above that is the mass of leaf litter on the dark forest floor. ②_____ Then there are the towering(高大的) ancient hardwood trees(阔叶树), and finally the tops of the tallest trees many metres above the ground. Each level of the forest forms its own little world, home to different kinds of living things.
More than 1,300 species of birds and over 400 species of mammals hide among the rainforest's plant life. The jaguar(美洲虎) is one example. It has yellowish-brown coat with black spots. While a large number of jaguars survive here, they are only one element of this forest's food chain. ③_____ These frogs, in turn, feed on insects which eat leaves and fruit. When a jaguar dies, a tiny army of microorganisms(微生物) helps break down its body and return the nutrients to the earth.
The Amazon rainforest breathes life into the planet by fixing carbon and producing over 20 percent of all the Earth's oxygen. ④_____ Moreover, the Amazon rainforest is a treasure house of species that can be used for food or medicine. Yet there is one major danger to these irreplaceable plants and animals: us.
⑤_____ As the influence of human activities such as agriculture and cattle farming continues to grow and the list of species in danger of extinction becomes longer, we are left with a question: can we afford to damage the "lungs of the planet"
A.They feed on at least 87 species, including frogs.
B.Thus, it is often known as the "lungs of the planet".
C.Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest.
D.The next level is made up of shorter plants with large leaves.
E. They give this area the richest species of plants and animals on the Earth.
F.Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
G.Over the past 50 years, 17 percent of the rainforest has disappeared due to human activities.

When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could when she was young. When she finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first. She managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish, so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.
A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind : If you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in
Spanish and they would dream in English.
One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early, but slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.
“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also jealous (嫉妒的). Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her student and asked him to tell her about his dream.
“All the people in my dream spoke English,” Tim said. “And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers, magazines and TV programs were in English, too.”
“ But that’s wonderful!” said Pat. “What did all the people say to you ” she asked.
“I’m sorry, Miss Jones. That’s why I slept so badly all night. I didn’t understand a word they said. It is a nightmare (噩梦)!” Tim answered.

A
根据第一段中的“..barred owls are now causing a drop in the population of... the northern spotted owl. The U.S. Geological Survey is doing something unusual...killing barred owls.”
根据第一段中David Wiens说的话中的“so it makes sense to do that”可知,David Wiens认为这样做是合乎情理的,由此可以推断,David Wiens对这个项目的态度是支持的。故选C。
B
4.答案:A
根据第一段中的“The Matschie's tree kangaroo is one species of tree kangaroos, most of which are endangered.” 故选A。
根据第二段中的“...the population of the Matschie's tree kangaroo is under control. Much of the success is because of the work of Dabek”可知,马氏树袋鼠的数量得到了控制,这种成功大部分是由于Dabek的工作,所以Dabek的保护工作是有效的。故选B。
根据第三段中的“The clans would set aside a part of their land as a ‘no hunting area’.”
根据第二段中的“He had completed the 26.2 miles on all fours to raise funds to help gorilla protection efforts in Africa.”及第三段中的“raised over...for the Gorilla Organization”可知,Tom Harrison 爬到终点线是为大猩猩组织筹钱。故选B。
9.答案:A
故选A。
根据第三段中的“...the Gorilla Organization, whose efforts...of the great apes.”
从第一段中的"but they are also one of the most unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of the last giant tortoises(乌龟) left on Earth. "可知大乌龟让the Galapagos Islands成为一个不寻常的地方,选C项。
13.答案:C
解析:细节理解题。从第二段中的"There are seven different kinds of tortoises on the eight islands, and each kind is slightly different from the other."
14.答案:A
When people first arrived in 1535, crews would seize as many tortoises as they could. They would roll the tortoises onto their backs when they were brought onto the ships."
Soon after the first ships, settlers arrived, bringing pigs, goats, donkeys, dogs and cats. All of these animals ruined life for the tortoises. Donkeys and goats ate all the plants that the tortoises usually fed on, while the pigs, dogs and cats ate thousands of baby tortoises each year."
故选A。

The②but③awareness④creatures⑤with⑥where⑦endangered⑧was found⑨has improved⑩frequently
结合句意可知此处是not just... but... 故填but。
come into contact with... 接触”。故填with。
该句中a first-class protected animal为a Bryde's whale 的同位语,a Bryde's whale 为该句的主语,该句缺少谓语,由后面的by fishermen可知a Bryde's whale与find之间为被动关系,由时间状语On June 29可知应用一般过去时。故填was found。
由该句中的时间状语 in the past five years可知应用现在完成时。故填has improved。
A Week in the Wild
This winter holiday, I, together with 30 other students, went to Yunnan and took part in the Wildlife Protection Winter Camp held by WWF.
We spent one week in the wild learning about endangered animals from wildlife professionals. We observed how different species of monkeys adapted themselves to their natural habitats. What's more, to help protect them, various activities were organized, such as picking up plastics, removing nets and traps and putting up posters.
The camp deepened our understanding of the wildlife protection. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we enjoy a better future together.
答案:
Paragraph 1:
After hearing the boy's words, Pat felt sorry for his terrible experience and said at least that was a good beginning. She still believed in the sentence stuck in her mind, so the English teacher made a deal with her students. Though she had only a limited knowledge of Spanish, she decided she should use the language more often while her students should use English the same way.
Paragraph 2:
In order to encourage her students to speak English y Pat also asked her students to tell their dreams in English while she did it in Spanish. It worked. Several students took turns to tell their dreams in fluent English. Amazingly, some students could finally dream in English, which made Pat almost jump with joy the moment she heard what her students said. She was not jealous this time. One possible explanation for this is that “ practice makes perfect”.
