Four Free Mobile Apps to Help You Learn English Faster
Have you realized that you can put your smartphone to really good use when learning English Here are four free mobile apps that will help you do just that.
Duolingo
If you want to learn English from the ABC, then this is the app you are looking for. Duolingo uses educational games to help you learn English. For beginners, the app focuses on helping you learn verbs, phrases and sentences.
Hello English
It covers all the aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, translation, grammar, spellings, speaking and reading skills. It uses educational games to teach different English lessons and offers new audiobooks, the latest news, and books. However, you should already understand simple English sentences and the alphabet(字母表), for the app can't help you learn English from the ABC.
Lingbe
If you are ready to practice your spoken English skills in the real world, you'll need Lingbe. It's a community-based app where people help each other and share their native languages. It connects you with real people on call who are native English speakers.
HelloTalk
HelloTalk is similar to Lingbe as it connects you with native speakers to help improve your language skills. However, it adds a few extra functions that might interest you. You can view the information about users to find a match that interests you. Additionally, you can also send texts and audio messages, and even make calls with other people.
Whether you are a beginner or a fluent learner, you can find your favorite app. Why not take action now!

Handwritten Chinese characters can be beautiful. I still remember looking at Chinese and not understanding anything it said and yet feeling a strong attraction. In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters. After having studied Chinese for a while, I realized that handwriting in Chinese takes a very long time to learn.
Living as we do in a digital era(数字时代) with smartphones and computers, most students sooner or later ask themselves this question: Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese When using smartphones or computers, we can use phonetic input(语音输入) systems, which choose the characters we want for us as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. When we enter different characters, we seldom need to be able to recognize the difference between characters in detail, because the computer makes the right choices for us. Do we really need to write Chinese by hand
I think most people agree that you should learn to write at least some characters at some point as a student of Chinese, although not necessarily straight away and not necessarily all the characters that you can say. But unless you don't care about written language at all, you should learn the basics of handwriting. Without them, it will be very hard to understand characters. You don't need to be a calligraphy master, but you do need basic handwriting skills to do this. Simply looking at things is, as usual, a bad way of learning.
I think learning the most common 500 or so characters is a good idea for all students. If you actually want to write by hand, increase that to 1,000. Then learn to handwrite characters outside of the 1,000 most common ones on a need-to-know basis.
4.What does the author think of Chinese characters
A.They are less understandable than English words.
B.They attract some foreigners to learn Chinese.
C.They show the greatness of Chinese culture.
D.They are not really that difficult.
5.What can we infer about Chinese characters in Paragraph 2
A.Chinese characters are very difficult for foreigners to learn.
B.People believe learning to write Chinese characters is important.
C.People doubt the necessity of learning to write Chinese characters.
D.Chinese characters may disappear with the development of society.
6.What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Understanding Chinese characters. B.Being a calligraphy master.
C.Getting into a good learning habit. D.Learning basic handwriting skills.
7.What would be the best title for the text
A.Is it necessary to learn to write Chinese characters by hand
B.When was the last time you wrote something by hand
C.What rules are there for handwriting
D.How to write Chinese characters on a computer

Elements of Latin have made their way into many Western countries. Data varies, but as much as70% of words in English have a Latin or Greek root.
By learning more about these roots and how they combine to create words, you will have an advantage in understanding new words, even if you've never seen them before.
The great thing is that it's not hard to learn these roots and recognise the patterns. You're not learning the whole language with its grammar and difficult points. You just need to memorise some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English.
So how do word roots work
Every word has a root. This part contains the key to a word's meaning. Take the word "happy" for example. This word only contains the root, which means full of joy". There's nothing more to the meaning of the word in this form.
Some words, however, have extra parts. We call these affixes(词缀), including prefixes, the part attached before the root, and suffixes, the part attached behind the root. Based on the additional meaning of the prefixes and suffixes, the meaning of the final word will be shaped to mean something new.
Take the word "autobiography" for example. The root is “bio", meaning life. You may have noticed that many words with "bio" have something to do with life or living beings—biology, biography, and so on. When the suffix "graph", meaning writing, is added to it, it means a story about someone's or something's life. Auto" means by oneself. Altogether, an autobiography" is a story about a person's life, written by the person himself or herself.
In a word, a better grasp of word roots can make you understand the English language better, and will help you with your vocabulary recognition and memory skills.
8.What's needed to understand new words with roots
A.A good understanding of Latin or Greek.
B.A full understanding of grammar.
C.The ability to recognise different parts of words.
D.The ability to speak various Western languages.
9.What do we know about the root
A.It can't form a word by itself. B.It is a necessary part of a word.
C.It is of greater importance than affixes. D.It has no impact on a word's meaning.
10.What is the meaning of “biochemistry”
A.The science that is related to living things.
B.A person who does research on chemistry.
C.A person who does research on living things.
D.The study of chemical processes related to living things.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage
A.The Secret of Understanding New Words
B.Latin's Way into Western Languages
C.Amazing Power of Affixes
D.Hints on Language Exams

Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet—but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent(口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language—English—to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly. “Most people actually speak several languages—it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world’s common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.
12.Which of the following is NOT true about online communication
A. People need to spell exactly.
B. Grammar is not so important.
C. People do not care about their accent.
D. Most English-speakers are not native speakers.
13.What can we infer from the text
A. We can only communicate online in English.
B. It’s impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary.
C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.
D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites.
14.What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said
A. Other languages are enriching English.
B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages.
C. English will become the only language in the world.
D. Chinese used to be the world’s common language.
15.What does the text mainly talk about
A. English is a common language around the world.
B. There are now many different language styles.
C. English language is developing with the Internet.
D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Evan, an eight-year-old boy, was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop again.
Several days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store’s door. When the shop remained closed for not just two days, Evan was worried he’d never be able to get his “dream job”.
85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a woman selling flowers for a living and Evan had befriended her when he helped her cross the street one day.
Now seeing her again, Evan ran up to her and greeted her. “Can I help you today, Evan Do you want flowers ” Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, “I’m looking for a job! Can you please hire me ”
“A job ” the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.
Evan shook his head. “All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me ” Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.
Then for a whole week, Evan would come to Mrs. Carter’s store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter’s boredom while she was working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter’s business became better.
A week later, on Evan’s last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. While making a huge bouquet for Evan’s mother, Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $200. When handing him the bouquet, she said, “Will you come to see me someday, Evan I’d be delighted to have you here.”
“I will!” Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.

第一部分 阅读理解
第一节
A
1.答案:A

B
4.答案:B
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“In fact, some students start learning Chinese because of the characters.(事实上,一些学生开始学习中文是因为汉字。)”可知,汉字吸引了一些外国人学习中文。故选B。
5.答案:C
解析:推理判断题。第二段中讲到了我们生活在数字时代并介绍了智能手机或电脑如何帮我们输入汉字,并且其中提到了两个问题:“Is it really necessary to learn how to write by hand in Chinese ”和“Do we really need to write Chinese by hand ”。由此可知,人们怀疑学习写汉字的必要性。故选C。
6.答案:A
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词所在的句子以及前面的两个句子“但是,除非你根本不在乎书面语言,否则你应该学习书写的基本要点。没有它们,就很难理解汉字。你不需要成为一名书法大师,但你确实需要基本的书写技能才能做到这一点。)”可推测画线词“this”指代上文中的“understand characters”。故选A。
7.答案:A
解析:主旨大意题。文章第一段点出了汉字的书写这一话题,第二段指出生活在数字时代的学生对学习写汉字的必要性持怀疑的态度,第三、四段阐述了大多数人的观点以及作者的观点。由此可知A项“有必要学习手写汉字吗 ”适合作为文章标题。故选A。
C
8.答案:C
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段“The great thing is that it's not hard to learn these roots and recognise the patterns...You just need to memorise some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English.”可知,学习这些词根和认出它们并不难,你只需要记住你经常在英语词汇中看到的这些部分(词根)。由此可知,要理解有词根的新单词,就需要有识别单词不同部分的能力。故选C。

10.答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据第七段中的“You may have noticed that many words with ‘bio’ have something to do with life or living beings(你可能已经注意到,许多带有‘bio’的词与生命或生物有关)”以及chemistry(化学)可推知,“biochemistry”的意思应当同时含有生物和化学的意思,故D项“与生物有关的化学过程的研究”符合题意。
11.答案:A
故选A。
D
12.答案:A
解析:细节理解题。由第二段中的“And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent(口音).”可知,逐渐地,他们使用英语与非本地人交流,尤其是在网上,语法、拼写和口音都不必太在意。由此可以看出:网上交流时,人们不需要拼写完全正确也可以。故在网上交流错误时“人们需要准确拼写”与原文不符。故选A项。
13.答案:B
解析:细节理解题。由第三段中的“Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary.”可知,因为产品,技术公司会介绍新发展的英语单词,这是为了用户能理解英语字典中没有的单词。所以,不可能在字典中查到所有的单词。故选B项。
14.答案:A
解析:细节理解题。由最后一段中的“other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.”可知,其他语言在进入英语,在这个过程中创造了一些新的东西。也就是说其他的语言与英语融合,丰富了英语,故选A项。
15.答案:C
解析:主旨大意题。由第一段中的“Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet—but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.”

故选A。
⑤细节句。设空处下一句提到“除非你觉得这是最好的学习方式,否则不要试图记住长长的词汇表”,即记长串的词汇是作者不太建议的学习词汇的方法,B项(使用思维导图帮助记忆词汇)是作者建议的方法,B项符合语境。

第二节
答案:①widely②factors③on④had become⑤leading⑥an⑦its⑧written⑨global⑩and
解析:①考查副词。be widely known for...因……而广为人知。句意:中国因其古老的文明而广为人知,这种古老的文明一直延续到现在。
②考查名词的数。one of后接可数名词复数。故填factors。句意:这其中的一个主要因素就是汉语书写体系。
③考查介词。be based on...

Knowing that you are longing for some advice on how to improve your Chinese, I am very glad to offer you a few suggestions.
First of all, it is helpful to watch TV programs in Chinese whenever possible, which can provide you with enjoyable context and make your learning interesting. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn to sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you'll learn and remember Chinese characters more easily. What's more, keeping a diary in Chinese will help you improve it.
May you make great progress!

Carrying the flowers, Evan rushed home to surprise his mom. “Happy birthday, Mom!” he cried, running up to her. Stacey was shocked at the huge bouquet. “Where did you get it ” she asked. When Evan told the whole story, Stacey was delighted and hugged her son closely. Evan smiled and was about to give her the bouquet when he suddenly noticed the envelope. He pulled it out and found the money in it. “But I told Mrs. Carter not to pay me! I think this got here by mistake!” said Evan.
Paragraph 2:
Then, Evan and his mom hurried to return the money to Mrs. Carter. When they reached her shop and were about to return the money, Mrs. Carter smiled and said, “It’s my pay for Evan. He did a very good job. Keep it. The flowers are my gift for you.” Stacey was grateful for Mrs. Carter’s kindness and invited her home for dinner that night to celebrate her birthday together. From then on, Stacey started to join Evan in helping Mrs. Carter in her shop and they became friends.
