"I have cancer." Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. "The not-knowing is the worst." she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. "Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can't take my smile." Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me-worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, "When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power."
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I've learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.
1.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean
A.There were other ways to treat cancer. B.Knowledge of cancer would be helpful.
C.Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer. D.I should be the one being there for Mom.
2.Which of the following words can best describe Mom
A.Humorous and generous. B.Considerate and ambitious.
C.Optimistic and determined. D.Caring and knowledgeable.
3.What is the fifth paragraph mainly about
A.The fear Mom shared with me. B.The ways Mom faced fear.
C.The jokes Mom told me. D.The bond Mom and I formed.
4.What lesson did the author learn from Mom
A.Luck counts in beating diseases.
B.Complaint does no good to one's health.
C.Positive attitudes get one through hardship.
D.Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot.
C
For the tension and pressures we all face every single day, a sense of humour can be helpful. The ability to laugh is very important to our mental health. And if we can laugh at ourselves, we're even further along the road to self-fulfillment.
Gordon hoped to become a professional singer. He had a good voice, but he was very sensitive about his abilities. For instance, if his voice coach suggested he practice a song a few more times until he got it right, Gordon would fall apart, thinking the coach was suggesting that he wasn't good and had no future in music.
He mentioned his sensitivity in his paper in a psychology class. The psychology professor called him in to talk about the paper, hoping to give him a chance to open up about the problem. The professor felt Gordon should know that such extreme sensitivity would make it difficult for him in the entertainment field, where the stage crew and entertainers are often very hard on new talent,
Gordon got angry, and told her she was "dead wrong" about him. Further, Gordon asked what she could possibly know about music and the pressures of the profession. The professor stood up and turned Gordon around, right in the middle of a sentence, asking him to continue, but to watch himself in the mirror on the back of the office door as he talked. Gordon tried to go on but suddenly he saw his expression in the mirror, and then when he turned to face the professor, he noticed a smile beginning to form on her face. At the very top of his outburst, Gordon burst out laughing. He stopped his aggressive talk and asked the professor if he looked that ridiculous all the time.
Seeing himself "objectively" made Gordon realize that in our everyday life, the ability to catch ourselves being so serious and bearing all the burdens of the world helps us relieve some tension through laughter.
Laughter is one of the ways in which we relax and recreate selfhood. The things we find in humour may vary, but the experiences of humour, pleasure, and enjoyment are extremely important and must be encouraged.
1.What can we learn about Gordon according to the second paragraph
A.He has broken up with his coach.
B.He has failed to be a professional singer.
C.He keeps practicing and hopes for the best.
D.He feels very sensitive to other people's comments.
2.Why did the professor talk with Gordon
A.To discuss his paper with him. B.To help him realize his problem.
C.To point out his rude behavior. D.To offer advice on reducing pressures.
3.How does the writer support his ideas
A.By offering analyses. B.By providing research results.
C.By giving an example. D.By quoting proverbs.
4.What is mainly discussed in the passage
A.Means of laughter. B.Benefits of laughter.
C.The cause of sensitivity. D.The importance of health.
D
When you're feeling low or even a little depressed, what do you want to do The answer for most of us is not very much. Our natural response to a bad mood is to rest with our comfort of choice and hibernate(蛰伏) a bit.
But according to new science, the best way to fight off the depression is to force yourself to get out there and do something new. You might have to drag yourself off the sofa, but this research shows you'll be happier for the effort.
For the study, the research followed the daily movements of 122 study subjects, using the location-tracking features of their phones for three to four months. They also sent subjects regular text messages asking them to report on their mood.
The scientists discovered the more people visited new and different locations, the happier they felt both that day and the next. Variety and novelty seem to lift our mood. “We also find that if we feel better today, we're likely to move around and have more novel experiences and have more experiential diversity the following day," study coauthor and NYU psychology professor Catherine Hartley said.
"These results suggest a reciprocal link between the novel and diverse experiences we have during our daily exploration of our physical environments and our subjective sense of well-being." Hartley commented.
This isn't the first time science has linked new experiences with positive brain benefits. Previous studies have shown that new and challenging experiences light up learning centers in the brain. Just as experience has probably taught you, you learn a lot faster when you get outside your comfort zone. If you've been stuck at home a lot lately, it's no shock that you feel lazy. Your brain is missing out on the novelty and exploration it desires. The good news is, if you can force yourself to do something new, you'll feel you can grow smarter.
1.According to new science, what should we do to lift our spirits
A.Explore the outside world B.Have a complete rest
C.Choose to enjoy our hobbies D.Stay in the comfort zone
2.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.By phoning the subjects.
B.By analyzing the subjects' locations.
C.By referring to previous relevant studies.
D.By tracking the subjects' movements and moods.
3."A reciprocal link" in Paragraph 5 means a link that proves _______.
A.strong but temporary B.weak and indirect
C.beneficial to each other D.suitable for each other
4.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Novelty improves learning effectiveness.
B.It's harmful to get stuck at home too long.
C.Your brain desires novelty and exploration.
D.Exploration is linked with positive emotions.
