Unit 2 Looking into the Future
A
Many automobile makers present their newest designs at car shows around the world. Many designers seek to create the car of the future. One device that is popular among car manufacturers (生产商) is an autopilot. An autopilot permits a car to drive itself without human control.
A recent car show in Geneva, Switzerland also presented other possible designs, including cars manufactured on 3D printers.
Rinspeed is a Swiss design company. It showed a vehicle based on the US electric car Tesla Model S, but the Rinspeed car includes a large television and an espresso coffee maker.
Frank Rinderknecht is the CEO of Rinspeed. He says he does not want to just sit and watch the steering wheel (方向盘) turn as he rides in a car with an autopilot.
"I want to ride; I want to sleep, relax, watch movies, news, and anything else. So that's the vision which we have. One day on the boring motorway traffic, you just do anything that makes your life better," said Rinderknecht.
One of the most interesting ideas presented at the show is a car built on a 3D printer. The German engineering firm EDAG designed the car. The body of the vehicle called "Genesis" is printed in one piece from a material called thermoplastic
Christoph Horvath is a spokesman for EDAG. "To create a car without the use of any tool, this would be a real revolution for the industry," said Horvath.
EDAG said it based its design on a turtle shell. The company said the design provided the right amount of strength and firmness.
Other automakers did not look so far into the future. Czech automaker Skoda presented its "Vision C" model vehicle. The car has an environmentally friendly natural gas engine.
Jo Davidson is a company spokeswoman. She said the car released very low levels of the pollutant gas CO2. Ms Davidson said the "Vision C" planned to be launched in two years.
(1).Why is an autopilot popular among car manufacturers
A.Because it can get a car to drive itself.

C.Because it may let a car fly in the sky freely.
D.Because it has a car moving in a particular direction.
(2).What is the common feature of the cars
A.They are all made from thermoplastic.
B.They all belong to the cars of the future.
C.All the designs are based on a turtle shell.
D.They have environmentally friendly natural gas engines.
(3).Where can we most probably read this text
A.In an economic report. B.In a short story.
C.In a travel magazine. D.In a technology report.
(4).What do we know about the vehicle called "Genesis"
A.It is designed by the American engineering firm.
B.The body of the vehicle is built on a 3D printer.
C.Frank Rinderknecht is the designer of the car.
D.The car is mainly made from the turtle shell.

Will you buy a car that can release calming smells into the air when you are stuck in heavy traffic Will you buy a robot that smells like a human being
Many people have seen the 3-D computer-made environments of virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR). Now these virtual worlds will not just look and sound real. Researchers have created VR environments that even smell like the real things. With the new technology, users open a virtual door and step into a new environment, like a rainforest. After they enter this virtual world, special equipment releases forest-like smells into the air to make the experience seem more real.
Suzanne Fisher said, "It is a really wonderful experience that you have because you are reexploring this environment and you have smells with it."
In the United States, Smell-o-vision was designed to provide smells during the showing of a movie. The Smell-o-vision system was once popular in the 1960s. Now, Emanuela Maggioni says it is close to becoming popular again. "People will be impressed by the connection with emotions, memories, and the sense of smell," Maggioni said. "It is unbelievable what we can do with technology."
The uses for smell technology are not just limited to films and the performing arts. Researchers showed a computer program where users could imagine themselves driving a car. The system included a special smell-spraying machine. Dmitri Murray said, "We want to deliver the smell of lavender (薰衣草) every time the person drives over the speed limit. We choose lavender because it's a very calming smell."
Scientists are experimenting with smells instead of sounds or image-based warnings on telecommunications equipment. And businesses are already using smell to influence people's behavior. "Not only... in stores... But on the other side, you can create and stimulate (刺激) immediate buying," Maggioni said. "So you're in a library and you smell coffee and actually you are unconsciously having the need to drink a coffee."
(1).Using smell technology, researchers make VR environments __________.
A.have a smell of a rainforest B.even smell like real ones
C.look like a 4-D environment D.impress people with a virtual world
(2).The example of Smell-o-vision proves that _________.
A.smell technology has been tried before
B.America is the first to use smell technology
C.businesses are already using smell technology
D.it is out of date to use smell-spraying devices
(3).How is smell technology used by businessmen
A.To make buyers understand salesmen better.
B.To remind people of their unrealistic buying.
C.To help customers choose their favorite goods.
D.To encourage people to buy something.
(4).What is the main idea of the passage
A.The advanced smell-spraying machines.
B.The development of smell technology.
C.A major breakthrough of smell technology.
D.The sense of smell in human communication.
C
Walmart will soon use 360 robot cleaners across a few hundred of its stores. Using maps input by human employees, the AI-powered cleaners will travel in the store with no difficulty, sweeping the floor—just as human employees used to do.
Perhaps the most striking thing about these robot workers is how not-striking they are. Sci-fi movies suggest a future full of human-like robots who appear with their horrible qualities. Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant lie. It's easy to imagine walking past an Auto-C on a shopping trip without even noticing its presence.
AI has already started to become a part of our everyday life. In New Jersey this week, dozens of workers were hospitalized after a robot at an Amazon fulfillment centre accidentally broke a can and enveloped workers in an eye-and-lung-damaging gas. Days earlier in California, an auto-piloted Tesla drove a drunk, sleeping driver down a highway, which no doubt did some potential risk to the other drivers on the road. Highway patrol officers figured out on the spot how to stop the AI car.
Of course, industrial accidents and drunk drivers existed as well before AI. Tools with the power to release the burden of physical labor—horses, steam machines, self-driving cars—also come with the power to injure people. And the presence of AI-powered machines that just steps away from us is, for now, still a rare thing for most people.
But the nature of robots' coming into our daily life will make it harder to recognize—or object to— the bigger changes they bring later. Walmart insists that the robot cleaners give employees more time for customer service and other tasks. Critics point out that they could just as easily become an excuse to reduce staff and wages.
(1).What is the difference between sci-fi movies and the reality
A.Now the human-like robots are hard to recognize.
B.Now people don't go to see the sci-fi movies.
C.Now the human-like robots can tell lies.
D.Now it is easy to ignore the robots.
(2).Why were some workers in hospital in New Jersey
A.Because they damaged the robot first.
B.Because the robot caused an accident on purpose.
C.Because the robot made a mistake by chance.
D.Because the robot driving them on the highway had an accident.
(3).What is the attitude of the author to AI
A.Supportive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
(4).What is the main idea of the passage
A.Artificial intelligence is bringing great effects to our daily life.
B.Walmart will soon use 360 robot cleaners across its stores.
C.We should say no to artificial intelligence.
D.Artificial intelligence is dangerous to our life.
D
From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat (威胁) to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2035 as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change businesses.
"The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces," said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia-Pacific. A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states, "Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs— just changing what people do" Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research. "The growth of companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies," it states.
A 2019 report by Pew Research Centre found 52 per cent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured "a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create," according to Aaron Smith, the reports co-author.
"Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change," Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
(1).What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.The result of job reduction. B.The fast development of AI.
C.The future life of elderly people. D.The influence of technology on jobs.
(2).What will people most probably do in the future
A.Take the place of AI. B.Work in a traditional way.
C.Take up jobs requiring creativity. D.Enjoy life without working anymore.
(3).What can be known from Grudin's words in the last paragraph
A.Unemployment will stay high. B.More jobs tend to appear in the future.
C.Job competition is likely to grow fiercer. D.Technology will have less control over jobs.
(4).What is the best title for the text
A.Are people losing their jobs B.The requirements for future jobs
C.The challenging life in the future D.Does technology simplify everything

In the building I'd just moved into, a note was posted, reading: Sign up to drive Mrs Black for her chemotherapy(化疗)treatments twice a month. Since I wasn't a driver, I couldn't add my name. But my grandma's words often came into my thoughts. "Dear, it's a blessing to do a good deed for someone else, but sometimes it's a blessing to let another person do something for you."
I was a university student. In this December storm, it was a hard journey to go to school and get out of school on time. One day before the night of my final exam, the snow fell heavily. The next morning, I walked to the bus stop. For an hour, I stretched(伸长)my neck, hoping that a bus would come. Then I gave up. I hoped I could find some help from my neighbours as the cold wind pushed me toward my apartment. Opening the door, I found myself face to face with a woman at the mailbox. She had a set of keys in her hand. Obviously she had a car and she was just going out. At that moment, despair overcame pride. I asked her whether she could possibly give me a lift.
An odd look crossed the woman's face, and I added, "Oh, I live here. I moved in recently, and I can't drive. I am in an urgent need to go to school for my final exam." Then, she agreed without delay, "Sure!”
On our way to my school, she spoke so warmly that I stopped feeling uncomfortable. "You remind me of my grandmother," I said. A slight smile crossed her lips. "Just call me Grandma Alice as grandchildren do."
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I got off, I thanked her again and again, waving as she drove away.

第二节
答案:①on②were③offering④dotted⑤a⑥it⑦that/which⑧To have⑨traditional⑩friends
have an influence on...
此处为there be句型,由 In the long history of it可知应用一般过去时,由后面的many great writers and poets可知谓语动词应用复数形式。故填were。
with its rolling green hills ④_____ with sheep and cattle为“with+宾语+宾语补足语”结构,its rolling green hills与dot之间为被动关系,故填过去分词dotted。
设空处无提示词,设空处前面是名词短语strong traditions, ⑦_____ include music, dancing, and dining中缺少主语,结合上题所给的句意可推测设空处引导定语从句,修饰指物的strong traditions,故填that或which。
make friends with... 交朋友”。故填friends。
第三节
答案:
Life in the Future
Sometimes I dream about what life in the future will be like.
Perhaps, some people will go to the moon for a holiday, while some will live under the sea. Maybe everyone will be living in smart homes, through which we can have an instant medical examination without leaving home. What's more, there is no need for children to go to school every day and they will start learning at home, because there will be more educational programmes on the Internet. Besides, in the future, each family will have robots, so every day what we only need to do is tell them what to do---shopping, sweeping the house and so on.
In a word, I'm optimistic about such a future life and I believe the dream will come true some day.
答案:
Paragraph 1:
When I got off, I thanked her again and again, waving as she drove away. Grandma Alice's help had made me loosen up, which was also like a ray of light in a dark world. Later after class I asked if any of my classmates was going the same way as me. It turned out that three fellow students were all very willing to offer me a lift without hesitation. Sitting in the car back home with one of them, I appreciated the amazing white world better than ever. Arriving at my apartment, I thanked my classmate for driving me home.
Paragraph 2:
Waving to my classmate, I walked home and heard a neighbour saying to Grandma Alice, "Good night, Mrs Black.” It dawned on me that Grandma Alice was Mrs Black. I had asked a person struggling with cancer to give me a lift in a snowstorm! Immediately, I sincerely apologized to her. To my surprise, she replied with a soft smile, "Helping you made me feel needed after being looked after by others for so long owing to my cancer." Convinced that both giving help and getting help could reflect the warmth of the world, I experienced a warm current rising in my heart despite the bitter cold outside.
