Welcome to MACHU PICCHU!
Often considered as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned a hundred years later, at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. It was announced a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But it has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and robbed secretly as early as in 1867 by a German businessman, Augusto Berns.
About 7,000 feet above sea level and located on a small hilltop between the Andean mountain range, the majestic city rises above the Urabamba Valley below. Separated into three areas—farming areas, urban areas, and religious areas—the structures are arranged so that the function of the buildings matches the forms of their surroundings. The agricultural terracing and ditches (梯田和沟渠 ) take advantage of the natural slopes; the lower areas contain buildings occupied by farmers and teachers, and the most important religious areas are located at the crest of the hill, overlooking the fresh green Urabamba Valley thousands of feet below.
Hikers, tourists, and the early explorers describe similar emotions as they climb their way through the Inca Trail. Many call the experience magical and say the area creates a wonderful green paradise, making it a must for anyone who travels to Peru.
1.What can we learn about Augusto Berns from the passage
A.He reported his finding to the government in time.
B.He was the first one who discovered the ruins of Machu Picchu.
C.He helped make Machu Picchu a UNESCO World Heritage site.
D.He worked together with Bingham on the research into Machu Picchu.
2.When did Machu Picchu become an important tourist attraction
A.After Hiram Bingham found the ruins.
B.After Spanish conquered the Inca Empire.
C.After it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
D.After Augusto Berns' work became known to the public.
3.Which word can replace the underlined word "crest" in the second paragraph
A.Bottom. B. Centre. C.Valley. D.Top.

In many developed nations, environmental groups challenge the view that water from a bottle is healthier than that from a tap (水龙头).
The Natural Resources Defense Council, which carried out a four-year review of the bottled water industry, concluded "there is no guarantee (保证) that just because water comes out of a bottle, it is any cleaner or safer than water from the tap".
The New York City-based action group added that about 25 percent of bottled water is "really just tap water in a bottle — sometimes treated, sometimes not".
In Great Britain the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management recently published a report questioning the quality of bottled water. "Making bottled water where there already exists a healthy and safe supply of drinking water cannot be seen as a sustainable (可持续的) use of natural resources," said Nick Reeves, the institution's executive director.
He said the view that bottled water is purer than tap water is unfounded.
"For example," he said, "the high mineral content of some bottled water makes it unsuitable for babies and young children."
But the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) points out that bottled water is fully controlled by government agencies, such as the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, and is guaranteed to be safe to drink.
Meanwhile, in many developing countries, tap water is either unavailable or unsafe, making bottled water a better choice. Even when bottled water is safer to drink, campaigners say that the packaging(包装) is threatening environmental health.
Worldwide some 2.7 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water each year, and about 86 percent of plastic water bottles in the U. S. become garbage, which does a lot of damage to the environment, according to the Container Recycling Institute in Washington D. C.
To help reduce environmental harm from plastic, some companies are adopting a more eco-friendly bottling choice.
1.What can we learn from the passage
A.Environmental groups think that people should drink more bottled water.
B.Bottled water is cleaner and safer to drink than tap water because it comes from a bottle.
C.Environmental groups doubt if water from a bottle is healthier than that from a tap.
D.The Natural Resources Defense Council advised people to drink tap water.
2.The underlined word "purer" in the fifth paragraph probably means "________".
A.more expensive B.more eco-friendly C.more reliable D.more natural
3.According to the passage, what is the disadvantage of bottled water
A.The bottles are made of plastic.
B.Water safety can't be controlled.
C.It can only be used in developing countries.
D.Few plastic bottles are not recycled.
4.What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A.The future of bottled water.
B.How to make bottled water safer.
C.How to make the most of tap water.
D.An environmentally friendly way to bottle water.

When I was about 4 years old, I decided to go to Disney World. For most young kids, it's a normal request, but I had cerebral palsy (脑瘫).Walking into anywhere, let alone a crowded place like Disney World was, to put it lightly, a tall order. Luckily, I had people in my comer to help me. Over the next three years, I worked with physical doctors, acquired a walker, and practiced walking, standing, and balance—all skills that I would need to turn my goal into a reality.
I remember the feeling when my legs would protest doing any more work. Despite this, everyone else told me I could do it, so I kept it up. It was all because of people like my parents, brothers, teachers, and doctors that I was able to grow so much, both physically and mentally. Constantly they pushed me to "walk on", yet encouraged me whenever I needed it.
On June 9, 2008, as I stood in the tunnel leading into Main Street, my dad asked me if I wanted any help. I instantly replied "No!" and situated myself facing the end of the tunnel, feet planted firmly, heart most likely beating out of my chest. Then I went, walking ever so slowly at first, then gradually speeding up. Step, step, step, step, bump. Holding fast onto the handlebars, I gathered up all my strength, picked up my walker and straightened out, picking up my pace once again. It wasn't too long before the cheering increased because I had made it to the end, where my mom was waiting with tears in her eyes and arms open wide ready to hug her son and tell him how proud she was.
Looking back on that experience, I realize something pretty thoughtful. Every once in a while, life will throw a few bumps in the road. Though it may set you back for a bit, don't let it stop you. Pick yourself back up and finish. It's worth it. Besides, there just might be someone there cheering you on along the way.
1.Which of the following best explains "a tall order" underlined in Paragraph 1
A.An easy decision.
B.An available action.
C.A reasonable order.
D.A challenging task.
2.Why does the author say he's lucky
A.He eventually has his brain disease well cured.
B.He constantly gets courage and support from others.
C.He is likely to do any kind of work in his later life.
D.He is naturally gifted in keeping balance on his own.
3.The author gives a vivid picture of himself in Paragraph 3 to _______.
A.explain he was terrified to take the first step
B.describe he took pride in his mother and friends
C.show how he managed to walk by himself
D.prove how he understood to respect others
4.What can be the best title of the text
A.Where Dreams Come True B.When Bad Fortune Falls

The history of the modern train industry started with the appearance of the first steam engines, which enabled the human race for the first time to transport goods and people using a fast, reliable and cheap way. With the initial (最初的) great expansion of railways and locomotive (机车) designs, countless inventors focused their careers on improving trains and enabling goods and people to be transported much more safely and faster than ever before. But all those trains had to start from one point, and that point was steam engines.
Steam engines were introduced to the public during the 1770s, but their Scottish inventor James Watt sat on the patent(专利证书) and did not allow anyone to gain any commercial benefit from his designs. When his patent expired in the 1800s, gates of innovation opened all around the world and many inventors jumped to the opportunity to create their own vision of locomotives powered by steam. Richard Trevithick was the first one who took this chance, and showed to the world his innovative design of high-pressure steam engines that enabled him to create much more power from the locomotive of the same weight and size than before. Even though nobody believed that steam can deliver enough power for industrial use, he managed to show his design to a mine owner by pulling the weight of 10 tons over his 10-mile-long course. Even though his initial train design was not successful, he continued to innovate, even managing to publicly show his "Catch Me Who Can" locomotive.
Much more success today is owned to English inventor Matthew Murray who in 1804 created the first moving steam locomotive, and the more famous Salamanca locomotive that was used publicly in 1812. However he was not the inventor who designed the steam locomotive that was used on the first public railway system. That honor went to George Stephenson, the famous English engineer who created "Locomotion" in 1825.
Today, steam locomotives are mostly used in museums as windows to the past, but sometimes preserved and working models are used as tourist attractions enabling anyone to feel for themselves how the train industry began.
1.What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean
A.To come to an end. B.To begin taking effect.
C.To be agreed. D.To be protected.
2.Which of the following can best describe Richard Trevithick
A.Stubborn and crazy. B.Easy-going and rich.
C.Creative and determined. D.Caring and loving.
3.What would be the best title of the text
A.Interesting Facts about Trains B.Modern Subway Transport Systems
C.History of Rapid Transit D.History of the Steam Locomotive

At sixty degrees below zero, Harry walked down the trail on a cold, gray day. Pure white snow and ice covered the earth for as far as he could see. This was his first winter in Alaska. He was wearing heavy clothes and fur boots, but he still felt cold and uncomfortable.
Harry was on his way to a camp near Henderson Creek where his friends were waiting. He expected to reach Henderson Creek by six o'clock that evening. It would be dark by then. He was refreshed when he realized his friends would have a fire and hot food ready for him. To make things better, there was a dog accompanying him on the journey.
The dog loved its owner but did not like the extreme cold. It knew the weather was too cold to travel. In spite of this bad situation, Harry with the dog continued to walk down the trail. He came to a frozen stream called Indian Creek. He began to walk on the snow-covered ice. It was a trail that would lead him straight to his friends.
As he walked, Harry looked carefully at the ice in front of him. Once, he stopped suddenly, and then walked around a part of the frozen stream. He saw an underground spring flowing under the ice at that spot. It made the ice thin. If he stepped there, he might break through the ice into a pool of water. To get his boots wet in such cold weather might kill him. His feet would turn to ice quickly and he would freeze to death.
At about twelve o'clock, Harry decided to stop to eat his lunch. He took off the glove on his right hand, opened his jacket and pulled out his food, which took less than twenty seconds. Yet, his fingers began to freeze.
Harry hit his hand against his leg several times until he felt a sharp pain. Then he quickly put his glove on his hand. He made a fire, beginning with small pieces of wood and adding larger ones. He sat on a snow-covered log and ate his lunch, enjoying the warm fire for a few minutes. Then he stood up and started walking on the frozen stream again.
Paragraph 1:
Several minutes later, the ice broke suddenly and Harry's feet sank into the water.

Paragraph 2:
What's worse, his dog ran away and the fear of death came over Harry.

A
由第一段段末的 "But it has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and robbed secretly as early as in 1867 by a German businessman, Augusto Berns."
由第一段中的 "…the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. Since then, Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction."
故选A。
Luckily, I had people in my corner to help me."
James Watt sat on the patent(专利证书) and did not allow anyone to gain any commercial benefit from his designs"和画线词后的"gates of innovation opened all around the world"可知,开始时瓦特持有专利,不允许任何人用它获取商业利益,后来应该是专利到期了,由此才打开了发明的大门。故选A项。
Richard Trevithick was the first one who took this chance, and showed to the world his innovative design of high-pressure steam engines"以及"Even though his initial train design was not successful, he continued to innovate"可知,Richard Trevithick富有创新精神且坚定不移。
It may not seem much, but over a week that could end up being close to $100.
Cashback websites also work with car hire, travel insurance companies, and hundreds of other travel companies.
③根据小标题以及空后的many pet owners offer their house to travelers in exchange for pet sitting可知很多房主以照顾宠物作为交换提供给游客住房,所以C符合逻辑。
World traveler Brian Corsetti says an often overlooked way to save money is to strike up a conversation with a local.
Instead of going to a restaurant, you stop by the home of a local... into how the locals really live and eat.

答案:①confused②which③broke④in⑤shortened⑥defense/defence⑦a⑧dating⑨to find⑩but
sb. be confused about...
故填in。

故填a。
此处是“主语+be+adj.(表示心理活动的词)+to do sth.” 故填to find。
not only...but(also)... 故填but。

答案:
Paragraph 1:
Several minutes later, the ice broke suddenly and Harry's feet sank into the water. It was not deep, but his legs got wet to the knees. Harry was so upset that the accident would delay his schedule. He had to find some firewood to build a fire to dry his clothes. He pulled off his gloves, took out his matches, and lighted the fire. Seeing the burning fire, he had thought he was safe. But suddenly, without warning, a heavy mass of snow dropped down. The flame of hope was put out.
Paragraph 2:
What's worse, his dog ran away and the fear of death came over Harry. He had no choice but to run to save himself. However, he did not feel his feet when they hit the ground. Having fallen several times, he decided to rest a while. As he lay in the snow, he noticed he was not shaking. He could not feel his nose or fingers or feet. A feeling of horror came into his mind. It was when he realized he was going to die that he heard a bark and the noise his friends made.
