第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Bahamas
The Bahamas has so many islands that it's hard to mash them all into one recommendation. But that's also part of its appeal. Airfare and hotel rates are generally modest year-round in the Bahamas, but you'll have less crowds if you plan your visit for the summer or early fall. But take note: These islands' atmosphere and activities largely cater to tourists, and you'll be hard pressed to find an authentic Bahamian vibe (气氛) during your getaway.
Austin
When it comes to the best of the best, size doesn't matter. Austin may be small compared to other capital cities, but its personality is overwhelmingly large, with citizens holding fast to the city’s mantra (咒语), "Keep Austin Weird." Austin really comes to life at night; the self-proclaimed "Live Music Capital of the World" boasts numerous live music venues and one of the largest music festivals in the U. S.
The City of Angels
The City of Angels ——Los Angeles needs no introduction. The traffic on the "101" will tire you out just as much as an evening at a lively West Hollywood club. And your dislike at the thick smog over the city will negate your enjoyment of a sunset overlooking Santa Monica Beach. To appreciate Los Angeles, visit the area more than once and get advice from locals.
Puerto Rico
Pick a vacation experience you're looking for, and Puerto Rico can help. An old town with a lot of historic architectures and cobblestone streets Look no further than Old San Juan and it's El Morro fortress. A beachside getaway with excellent vistas (远景) and miles of soft, white sand A global destination with high-end shopping and exciting nightlife

C.many ancient buildings
D.a lot of music dubs

Kieron Graham has known from a young age that he was adopted. While he loves his adoptive family, he has always wondered about his birth mother and brother. When his adoptive mom gave him a DNA test tool, they both hoped it might lead to his birth family. But neither guessed it would work so quickly, or that when it did, Graham would learn he and his long-lost brother may have crossed paths every day.
It took just one week from the time Graham, a college student at Georgia's Kenne saw State University, received his DNA results on Ancestry. com for him to connect with his brother. Graham's DNA results showed that his closest match was a man named Vincent Ghant, and it turned out Ghant lived just a few minutes away.
Graham reached out and learned that the two were in fact long-lost brothers. Their mother, Shawn Ghant, made the difficult decision to place Kieron in adoptive care when he was just a baby. And she has worried and wondered about her youngest son ever since. Graham has since been reunited with his mother and both of his brothers on his mother's side.
"It's all surreal (离奇的),too many emotions to describe exactly what I'm feeling about the entire situation, but it's a good situation." Graham tells MNN.
As fate would have it, Kieron and Vincent are both students at Kenne saw State. They even have the same major: political science. So it's a safe bet the two crossed paths many times over the past three years. And now ,thanks to some DNA sleuthing (筛查), the two will cross paths many more times in the years to come.
"We're getting together on New Year with everyone, birth mother included," Graham says. "That's sure to be a very indelible New Year indeed, which will always be treasured by us.

A.It was hard for Shawn to place her youngest son in adoptive care.
B.Graham has three adoptive brothers on his mother's side.
C.It was too difficult for the whole family to get united.
D.Shawn Ghant loves her older sons more.
3.What does Graham probably think of his experience
A.Unbelievable and exciting. B.Surprising but common.
C.Undoubted and inspiring. D.Moving but painful.
4.What does the underlined word "indelible" in the last paragraph mean
A.Normal. B.Silent. C.Traditional. D.Unforgettable.

Like people, plants experience stress. And also, like people, the response to that stress can determine success.
Bad environmental conditions, such as drought, flood, heat and other stresses, affect yields(产量) more than crop pests and diseases. "We are trying to find a way to equip plants with the ability to tolerate environmental stress and maintain high yields", said Stephen Howell, a professor of genetics and cell biology.
"Plant cells produce proteins (蛋白质) and ship them to different parts of the cell. Under normal conditions, these proteins are folded into their normal, healthy structures as they are produced. When a plant is under stress, its cells produce poorly folded or unfolded proteins. Then a built-in system senses this and sets off an alarm in the cell," said Howell.
In response to the alarm, another protein (IRE1) starts working and creates a different process which activates (激活) the stress response genes whose products bring about defensive measures that help the plant survive.
"As it turns out, responses that are activated under stressful conditions actually inhibit the growth of plants," said Howell. "This allows them to preserve their energy to survive the stressful conditions."
"For plants in the wild, this response is a help for survival", he said. In production of agricultural crops, however, this response reduces yields.
"You don't want crop plants to stop growing," Howell said. "You want them to continue to grow and produce more even though they are under stress."
"With the new understanding of this stress response, the next step may be to silence the alarm system", said Howell. "What may be important is to disable some of these stress responses. That may make the plant more productive under stressful conditions."
1.According to the text, an alarm in the plant cell is caused by __________.
A.the folded proteins B.the changed proteins
C.the defensive measures D.the stress response genes
2.The energy preserved in the plants under stressful conditions _________.
A.helps the plants to survive B.helps to maintain high yields
C.keeps the plants growing D.helps to produce proteins
3.The underlined word "inhibit" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by "__________".
A.prevent B.start C.continue D.promote
4.How does Howell intend to make crop plants maintain high yields under stressful conditions
A.By making crop plants keep more energy.
B.By making crop plants stop growing.
C.By making the alarm system stop working.
D.By making the alarm system respond quickly.
D
Have you ever heard of agritourism where you can experience the farm life If not, Dr. Cindy Ayers-Elliott will tell you the real story of Foot Print Farms.
The original concept of building Foot Print Farms was simple. When Ayers-Elliott returned to her hometown after graduation, she didn't have to look any further than her state's alarming health statistics to find a mission. Everywhere she turned, there were reports of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. "The problem was already identified," explains Ayers-Elliott. "Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn't take research to see that. And many of the state's greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet."
These days, Foot Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds of herbs and vegetables, is making fresh, naturally grown food. “When speaking of the key to my success, the co-op model works because we share the work and rewards," notes Ayers-Elliott. "A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team. To earn the money for equipment and other items, players committed to working five hours a week on the farm, and by the end of the summer they produced 1,000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weights, T-shirts, sweat suits and pregame meals. But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts."
"It's a model that can easily be learned in other places and I'm looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that—to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities," Ayers-Elliott remarks. She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism area to the farm, where visitors can experience the farm life, learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.
1.What made Ayers-Elliott set up Foot Print Farms
A.The problems faced by local farmers. B.Her further research into heart disease.
C.The failure of her career after graduation. D.The health state of people in her hometown.
2.Why does the author take the football team as an example
A.To advocate the concept of independence. B.To stress the importance of teamwork.
C.To support the idea of co-op model. D.To explore the key to success.
3.What is Ayers-Elliott's attitude towards the future of FootPrint Farms
A.Optimistic. B.Skeptical. C.Cautious. D.Ambiguous.
4.What is the main idea of the text
A.Naturally grown food benefits peopled health.
B.Food Print Farms is making a difference in Mississippi.
C.Ayers-Elliott encourages people to experience the farm life.
D.Agritourism is becoming increasingly popular in America.

One day, Max notices a very pretty woman visiting the exhibit he is guarding. He has seen her before. In fact, she often comes to see the rare jewelry exhibit, sometimes several times a week.
During one of these visits, she starts a conversation with Max. She asks if it is difficult to be a security guard and if he ever gets bored. She introduces herself as Maria, a fashion designer.
When Maria comes to visit, she often talks with Max. "Maybe she likes me," he thinks.
Max thinks she is very interesting and wants to spend more time with her. During one of their talks at the museum, he finds out that she is studying Italian.
He lies and tells her he has always wanted to learn Italian. He is simply using Italian as a trick. And it works! Max and Maria meet every Saturday afternoon in the museum garden to study Italian.
During the lessons, they also talk about themselves. Maria shares her dreams of one day showing her fashions in a museum. Max tells her many details about his security job, including the security code and the locations of alarms. He jokes that it would be very easy to rob the museum.
Over the passing weeks, they have learned more about each other. What Max doesn't learn, however, is that Maria is not as innocent as she looks. Maria is actually an international jewel thief! Police from eight different countries have been searching for her in the past two years!
Her latest goal is to steal the rare Black Diamond! This diamond is the most valuable diamond in the world and it is part of the exhibit that Max is guarding. All her attention on him is a trick to learn more about the museum's security system.

When it comes to the advantages of urban life, what comes into our minds are the well-established transportation system, quality education and health care as well as comfortable living conditions, which are the main attractions of modern city life.
However, as a result of the widespread use of modern vehicles and boosting industry, there are some disadvantages that can't be ignored. For instance, traffic jams have become a big headache for the people driving to and from work. Besides, noises and harmful smoke pose a threat to people' s health.
Despite the disadvantages above, I still think it suitable for people to live in the city where there are various cultural events and people can enjoy the convenience of modern life.
