An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you are not sure what to do. The question of whether or not to bring a gift often gives guests a headache. But in American culture, it’s not a must do thing, to bring a present. Proper gifts for general occasions (场合) might be flowers, candies or—if the family has small children—toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice.
Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, “Can I bring anything ” If it’s a party, everyone will bring a dish. Otherwise (否则) the host will possibly answer, “No, just yourself.” For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable clothes. Remember to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts that you may be late.
During the dinner conversation, it’s polite to compliment (称赞) the hostess on the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food. When you’ve had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you are the guest, your hosts may not let you do that instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit chat, it’s probably time to head for the door. And don’t go around look at the house. It’s more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour.

A. Candies. B. Toys. C. Dishes. D. Flowers.
( )2. What does the underlined word “informal” mean
A. 非正式的 B. 有礼节的 C. 正规的 D. 丰盛的
( )3. How do you show your biggest compliment to the hostess on the wonderful meal
A. By saying she is good at cooking. B. By saying the food is delicious.
C. By eating lots of food. D. By inviting the host to your house.
( )4. What are not supposed to do when you are invited to an American family
A. Offer to clear the table or wash the dishes after dinner.
B. Drink tea or coffee after dinner in the living room.
C. Look around the house without host’s guiding.
D. Open the gift box as soon as possible
( )5. What’s the best title for the passage
