Curling(冰壶)is a winter sport that goes by two nicknames: “chess on ice” and “the roaring game”. It is called “chess on ice” because it requires strategy(策略)and patience to play well. On a strip of ice that is about 44.5 m long, two teams of four players slide(滑动)heavy stones on the ice towards a target. Brooms are used to sweep the ice and guide the stone. When the stone slides across the ice, it makes a rumbling(隆隆声)sound. This is why curling is also called “the roaring game”.
Curling is a new sport in China. Although it looks simple at first, the sport depends greatly on teamwork, critical thinking(思辨性思维)and self-control.
The cold northeastern city of Harbin is a center for winter sports, and some of China’s top curlers call Harbin home. One of these famous curlers is Wang Bingyu. I needed all my power just to hold onto the fishing rod. I pulled, and I pulled and I caught the biggest fish that ever swam on the earth! It was heavier than everyone in this room put together! Then something terrible happened!
After I pulled the huge fish into my boat, I saw that the boat was going under water!Water was coming into the boat from all sides!I was not a very good swimmer, so I was scared.

In almost(几乎) every big university in the United States, football is a favorite sport. American football is not like soccer.
Players sometimes kick the ball, but they also throw the ball and run with it. They try to take it to the other end of the field; they have four chances to move the ball ten yards. They can carry it or throw it. If they move it to the end of the field, they can receive six points. This is called a touch-down.
It’s difficult to move the ball. Eleven men on the other team try to stop the man who has the ball. If the man does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball to the other team.
Thousands of people come to watch it when there is a football game. They all shout loudly for their favorite team. They dance and jump while they are yelling. Each team plays ten or eleven games each season. The football season usually begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the season ends. ①The 24th Winter Olympic Games were just hosted in Beijing, but the city was no stranger to competitive (竞技性的) sports on snow and ice.
②Actually competitive winter sports were already popular in China a thousand years ago in the form of bingxi (playing on ice). Bingxi began in the Song Dynasty and became really popular during the Qing Dynasty. Emperor Qianlong hosted bingxi nearly every year. He had the first one in 1742, almost two hundred years before the first Winter Olympic Games.
③Events of bingxi were recorded by many ancient palace painters. A bingxi painting just shows scenes of bingxi during the Qing Dynasty.
④In bingxi, three types of ice skating are performed. The first one is the speed race which is similar to modern speed skating. Participants (参赛者) skated to the emperor’s ice bed, from two to three kilometers away. In the painting, the emperor is seated inside his ice bed. Whoever reaches the emperor first wins first prize. The second is figure skating. Jumps, spins (旋转) and pair work moves in modern figure skating can all be found in the painting. The third is soccer on ice. Participants in two teams skate, kick and try to score goals. If the “tool” for scoring goals is changed from legs to sticks, it is similar to today’s ice hockey (冰球).

My name is Wei Hua and I’m a sporting robot of the 23rd century. I’m clever at high flying exercises. I jump from spaceships and as I fall, I turn, dive, circle and dance until I softly land as close as I can to the finishing line.
Robot competitions in the 23rd century are truly a popular sport. Fans from all over China watch their hand-held TVs when a competition comes on. Last time I took part in the 78th Olympics and I won the silver medal (银牌) for my performance.
This year I was very proud to be chosen again. I wanted to meet robots from other countries and explore ideas about our sport. However, my programmer fell ill the week before we were leaving. It was very painful for her and I felt very afraid. I didn't feel so confident that I would win. The day of the competition was rather cold for my legs and my special oil began to freeze. I stopped for a moment (which I shouldn't) before I jumped from the starting place on a little spaceship, then I began my performance. At the correct moment I tried to open my parachute (降落伞) but there was a problem. It only opened a little. I began to fall faster and faster so that I could not turn, dive, circle or dance. My heart stopped beating as I landed heavily on a mountain covered with snow.
This is why I am writing to you from my hospital bed with two broken legs and a weak head. I did not win anything at the Olympics after all. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to compete once more. Let's hope for greater success in the next Olympics!

During my first year of high school, I was a skinny (干瘦的) boy who weighed just 55 kg. I dreamed of being a football star. I played a little bit, but spent most of my time on the bench.
Over the summer, I found a special diet that bodybuilders use to bulk up. Drinking a lot of whole milk and lifting weights every day added an extra 11 kg of muscle (肌肉).
By the time football season started, I felt ready. I was soon disappointed, though, when I saw that I was still smaller and slower than most of the other boys. I found myself on the bench again.
That was to change during one of our first games of the season. We had built up a lead and the coach felt secure (放心的) enough to send me in for a while to play halfback (前卫). I was so excited.
On the very first play, I met with challenges. When the quarterback (四分卫) handed the ball off to me, I thought it was my time to show off. However, I was soon hit by three of the other team’s players. They tackled (擒抱并摔倒) me hard to the ground. I got up and walked off the field, back to the bench.
Over the years, I have lost count of how many times I have dreamed of achieving something, only to find that the world had other plans. I hated this for a long time. It was not until I became a football commentator (评论员) that I finally realized that maybe the world’s plans for me are better than my own.

The ancient capital Xi’an in Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province has just held the National Games. As the capital of 13 dynasties in Chinese history, from the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-771 BC) to the Tang Dynasty (618 AD-907 AD), the ancient city has never been far from sports. During that time, it held many sports events, such as cuju games.
Cuju was an ancient Chinese competitive game. It was mainly about kicking a ball through an opening into a net. As an ancestor (祖先) of soccer, it first appeared in the ancient Chinese historical book Zhan Guo Ce, which describes cuju as a way of entertainment (娱乐) among the common people.

Emperor Hangaozu Liu Bang, the first emperor of the Western Han Dynasty, was a cuju fan. He not only liked watching cuju games, but always tried his footwork on the field (场地). Liu Che, emperor of the Han Dynasty, who was crazy about cuju, would build a cuju field wherever his army went. He used cuju as a way of training soldiers.
Up to the Tang Dynasty, women cuju players were very popular in the royal court (皇宫), as emperors enjoyed watching cuju games. At that time, different kinds of skill were widely used in playing cuju, mainly serving as a form of entertainment.

Many Americans love sports. This does not really mean that they get any exercise. What they do is to watch national teams on TV. They watch baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf and tennis which means that for most of the weekends they sit in front of the TV. Sometimes, their friends watch with them.
Baseball is the great American sport and every team has fans. Almost every big city has a team, and as each team plays 162 games a year, following baseball can take up a lot of time. Although called World Series, it has only one other country to take part in —Canada.
Football played in autumn and winter is also popular. It is not at all like the game called soccer. There isn’t much kicking in American football, which has more to do with running with the ball and knocking people down. Each team only plays 16 games during the season, and these take place on Sundays and Monday evenings. Half the country watches the final game on a Sunday, in January.
