67 Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Allen was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Allen and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Allen began to treat me more like a friend rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.勃利县中2023-2024学年高三上学期9月月考

Ibrahim Hamadtou of Egypt was just 10 years old when a tragic train accident resulted in the amputation (截肢) of both of his arms. Children are resilient, and Ibrahim didn’t let his life-changing circumstances keep him from playing, working, and eventually growing up to marry and have three kids. Oh, did we mention he’s also a world-famous table tennis player
“In our village, we could only play, at that time, table tennis and soccer—that’s why I played both, “Ibrahim said. “It was logic to play soccer first due to my case; then I played table tennis as a challenge.”
All it took was one friend’s words to inspire Ibrahim to succeed at table tennis. “I was in the club where I was officiating (担任裁判) a match between two of my friends,” he recalled. “They disagreed on a point, when I counted the point in favor of one of them. The other player told me, do not interfere as you will never be able to play. It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.”
And play he did! Ibrahim has earned several honors throughout his career so far, including silver medals in the African Para Table Tennis Championships in 2011 and 2013.
To play, Ibrahim holds the paddle in his mouth and uses his foot to serve the ball. “It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the racket with my mouth and making the serve; with practice and playing regularly this skill was improved,” he said.
This legend now competes against some of the greatest players in the world and has attended the last two Paralympic (残奥会) games. While he didn’t win against China’s Chen Chao at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, he has gained international recognition for his perseverance and incredible talent. That is the face of true determination! Ibrahim is showing other people with limb differences that there’s a spot for them at his table.

A team of researchers from several institutions in the UK and one in Estonia has created a type of buoy(浮标)that has proven to be effective at frightening seabirds, thus preventing them from getting caught in gillnets - a type of vertical fishing net that is made of a material that makes it nearly invisible underwater.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of seabirds die when they get caught in gillnets. Some estimates suggest that up to a half-million birds are caught in them each year. Over the years, researchers have created devices to prevent the birds from trying to catch fish near or in gillnets, but those didn’t work well.
To find a way that would work for all seabirds, the researchers first studied seabirds in a general sense, looking to find things that they would avoid. They noted that seabirds avoided eye contact with other creatures. Then the researchers came up with a simple idea - they put a small pole to a regular buoy and then attached a pair of googly eyes(金鱼眼) to the top of it. They made the eyes big enough so that even birds with poor eyesight, such as geese, would see them. Adding to the effectiveness of the device, waves made the eyes move back and forth. And the wind made the buoy spin very slowly, making sure that birds from every direction would get a good look at the eyes.
To test their idea, the researchers selected several sites near gillnets and counted how many birds approached and how many attempted to catch fish near the nets. They then set up their googly-eyed buoys and once again counted birds. Over the course of 62 days, they found the number of birds that tried to catch fish near the gillnets dropped by approximately 25% for a distance of up to 50 meters. They also found that the birds were less likely to fish near where the buoys had been for up to three weeks after they had been removed.
28.What is the function of Paragraph 2
A.Introducing a new topic to discuss. B.Providing background information.
C.Summarizing the previous paragraph. D.Pointing out the main idea of the text.
29.Why did the researchers make the googly eyes big
A.To clearly observe seabirds’ eye contact.
B.To ensure all the seabirds can see them.
C.To effectively identify the right direction.
D.To allow them to survive the strong wind.
30.What does the researchers’ test result mainly suggest
A.The new device still needs improving.
B.Gillnets are a death valley for seabirds.
C.The googly-eyed buoy proves effective.
D.Seabirds hardly catch fish near the nets.
31.What is the text mainly about
A.A device keeping seabirds safe from gillnets.
B.A way to help seabirds catch fish effectively.
C.A googly-eyed buoy guiding seabirds to hunt.
D.A group of researchers interested in seabirds.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a heart attack. Of course, this statistic applies only to humans. But what about other animal — do they also experience this condition
A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel (血管) distributing oxygenated blood to the heart gets blocked and a piece of heart tissue dies from the deprivation of oxygen, according to Flavio Fenton, a professor of physics who studies both human and other animal species’ hearts. “Since animals’ hearts are very similar,” Fenton said, “most animals hearts, in principle, could have heart attacks.”
But that’s not what happened. For instance, heart attacks occur very rarely in dogs. Even the chimps, which are not only closely related to humans but also share similar risk factors for heart disease, do not have heart attacks. Even in mice and rabbits that are genetically modified to have high cholesterol (胆固醇) and blood fats for the purpose of inducing atherosclerosis and other human diseases, actual heart attacks rarely occur, according to a 2009 paper.
Despite previous reports that other animals mostly don’t have heart attacks, the truth is that there haven’t been a lot of experiments investigating this question. “You can observe that an animal has suddenly died, but very rarely would you actually look for the cause of it. We just don’t know whether they suffer heart attacks,” said Tomasz Owerkowicz, a physiologist at California State University.
But based on heart structures, researchers can make predictions about which creatures are most likely to have heart attacks. Owerkowicz and Fenton are doing such experiments on alligators (短吻鳄). “In their heart, you find the vessels; and they have spongy (海绵状的) tissues, around which there’s a lot of blood, not necessarily coming from the vessels,” Fenton said.
According to the researchers’ experiments so far, alligators don’t have heart attacks. The alligator’s heart tissue had no signs of cell death, Fenton added.
32.What does the underlined word “deprivation” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Consumption. B.Encounter. C.Lack. D.Production.
33.What do the animals mentioned in Paragraph 3 have in common
A.They have high cholesterol.
B.They hardly suffer heart attacks.
C.They are easily genetically modified.
D.They share similar risk factors for heart disease with humans.
34.What’s Tomasz Owerkowicz’s attitude to previous reports
A.Indifferent. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Hopeful.
35.Why do alligators have no heart attacks
A.Their blood vessels are quite strong.
B.The cells in their heart are in large numbers.
C.Their heart can beat faster than most animals’.
D.The blood in their heart has multiple sources.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
How to Write a Good Ending to a Story
Stories present an event or series of events and have a beginning, middle, and end. 36 To write a good ending for your story, there are at least four methods to show the reader why your story is important.
Deciding the End
37 The middle will include rising tension and your characters’ reactions to the conflict. Most story conflicts will either be person vs. nature, person vs. society, or person vs. themselves. Your final scene should resolve this conflict, whether your characters get what they want or not.
Explaining the Journey
Reflect on the significance of all the events. What themes, ideas, or arguments are you trying to portray through them You don’t want to tell your reader directly, but you need to show them. 38 —where the reader follows the events flowing in turn—will help you create an ending that makes sense based on what has happened earlier.
Using Action and Images
Use action to show (not tell) what is important. We know that stories full of action, whether written or visual, appeal to all ages. Build your ending with description and sensory images, for sensory details connect us emotionally to the story. Highlight a theme. 39
Following Logic
Sometimes when we get too excited (or too frustrated) about a story we’re writing, we can forget that events and behaviors tend to follow logic. 40 Most topics—if pursued through logic—will invite your readers into deeper thinking.
A.First, identify the parts of your story.
B.Taking a journey to seek inspirations
C.Thinking about your story as a journey
D.Your story will have a beginning to introduce characters and setting.
E.A good story ending often creates a significant impact on the reader.
F.Actually, a good ending just records what would logically happen in a situation.
G.Focusing on a specific subject through images and actions can help you create a structure unique to your story.

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.
Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.
续写要求: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation.
