Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. "Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers," she says. However her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that's pretty powerful.

A.She helped her dad with his work. B.She ran the family farm on her own.
C.She supported herself through college. D.She taught her sisters and brothers at home.
2.Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield

When the campus of Shekou International School (SIS) is still kept shut because of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching activities at the school have been resumed(重新开始) online since Feb.3, 2020.
The school is using popular apps and software for online learning. Video conferencing and office automation are used to help teachers keep track of students' conditions and communicate with their workmates across the world. Teaching online also offers a new experience to the teachers to update their teaching methods and to step out of their comfort zones.
Staying in Phuket, Thailand, science teacher Riley Laird records videos on a 10-year-old green sea turtle named Marlin and the local turtle sanctuary(收养所) as part of the online classes on ecosystems for Grade 7 students. "I want to connect our learning with the reality. The sanctuary sends us updates on the turtles, health and progress. They say that Marlin is likely to be released into the sea in mid-June," says Laird.
Rebecca Wallace is a Grade 4 teacher at the school, staying in her mother's home in New York. From 8 p.m. to midnight every day, she starts teaching mathematics and arts to her students living in various time zones. Though teaching nearly around the clock, Wallace says that she is getting to know the students better in terms of their homes, family and even pets.
Greg Smith, head of SIS, names the online teaching period "new normal" at the school. "Students are now more skillful at using technology than before. They see that communication is the most powerful part of being an effective learner and can use the tools to shrink distance and time. The 'new normal' will offer more opportunities of connecting to the world and more focuses on creating real solutions," he says.
According to the school, 68% of its students are staying in Shenzhen while 27% of them are staying abroad for the epidemic.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen and teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are probably worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extracurricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.
1.What does the underlined word "orientation" mean in paragraph 2
A.Training. B.Game. C.Discussion. D.Examination.
2.What are freshmen probably worried about

C.The relationship with teachers. D.The freshman orientation.
3.Extracurricular activities mainly help students __________.
A.build up healthy bodies B.develop friendships
C.develop their interests D.improve their learning ability
4.Who is this passage written for
A.Freshmen at high school. B.Freshmen's parents.
C.Middle school students. D.Upperclassmen in high school.

When Lisa was a little girl, she learned an important lesson from her father. Her father told her that when she faced a problem, she should try another solution instead of giving up. In the following years, Lisa always remembers her father's words.
When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer after growing up. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road.
After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted(针织的)sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (编织法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself after talking with her for a while. The lady said it was the work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweater.
Later Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. The following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
Lisa was very nervous but she was lucky. Not long after the party began, her sweater drew the attention of a store owner from New York. She wanted to order forty such sweaters in two weeks. Lisa was really happy and accepted the order.

⑦考查状语从句。句意同上,so...that...为固定句型,意为"如此……以至于……"。故填that。
The classical gardens of Suzhou,谓语动词使用复数形式。故填are。
The underlying philosophy. literature, art, and craftsmanship为逻辑动宾关系,需用过去分词形式。故填shown/showed。
第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
New Era, New Student
As new students in a new era, we need to sweep away all the uncivilized phenomena in our school.
Some students take it for granted to waste food. Besides, in the library, some students speak or talk aloud, disturbing and annoying others. Little as the matters seem to be, we cannot afford to overlook the serious consequences they will bring. So I suggest the school post more noticeable slogans and make relevant rules to help students get rid of those uncivilized behaviors.
I sincerely hope that we can become a better person to make contributions to the society.
