This year, most people have probably canceled travel tickets than booking them, but it's not too late to change that trend completely. Here are some vacations you can plan this fall.
Go to a local farm
Visiting a farm is the "number one" travel pick right now. Price plays a big role in that suggestion. Apple picking, for example, is usually very affordable, with some orchards (果园) offering products by the pound, for $ 1 or $ 2, and others offering a flat fee for an all-you-can-fill bag for about $ 30.
Visit a national park
There are 423 national parks in the U. S. , so you can get one to travel. If you're up for a challenge, you can climb the Half Dome in Yosemite National Park or race down the hills of sand in Colorado. The parks are also affordable. An annual pass, which guarantees entry to every park for an entire family, is just $ 80.
Plan a camping trip
It doesn't cost much for camping. Most states have dozens of drive-in camp sites, and you can also find cabins in the $ 50 - $ 100 per night range. There's no shortage of activities, either — whether it's fishing, hiking, biking or just perfecting your camping recipe.
Rent an RV (旅行房车)
RVs are a best choice for a cheap vacation. Using an RV for a vacation means you're paying for your transportation and lodging (寄宿) all in one. Also, considering that some two-person RVs can go for as little as $ 175 - $ 200 per night, you can easily find yourself traveling around the country without breaking the bank.
1.Which vacation would a thrill-seeker most probably choose
A.Go to a local farm. B.Visit a national park.
C.Plan a camping trip. D.Rent an RV.
2.What do the vacations have in common
A.Wallet-friendly. B.Environment-friendly.
C.Family-friendly. D.User-friendly.
3.What's the unique advantage of renting RVs
A.It makes your vacation adventurous. B.It offers free trips around the world.
C.You can kill two birds with one stone. D.You may have someone to keep you company.
B
Scientists and marine biologists(海洋生物学家) had something to celebrate last week when two lost humpback whales(座头鲸) returned to the Pacific Ocean. Delta and Dawn—a mother and a baby—had circled the Sacramento Bay area for two weeks before going back to the ocean.
"We all shouted loudly like 'Yay'!" said Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the Marine Mammal Center. "It's been really exciting."
The humpback whales were last spotted on May 29 near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Scientists are sure that the whales swam into open water during the evening of May 29 or early the next morning, since there have been no further sightings of the whales. Even so, boats were sent out to look for them, just in case the whales made another wrong turn.
Officials spent two weeks trying to get the whales to turn back towards the ocean. Biologists played recordings of whale-feeding as well as unfamiliar sounds to try to make the whales head back to the Pacific Ocean.
However, Delta and Dawn gave scientists an unexpected chance to study humpback whales in the wild. Scientists were able to gather sound recordings and watch their behaviors. This is especially exciting because humpback whales are an endangered species. What's more, scientists don't usually have the chance to observe (观察) them in their natural habitat.
"All those things are very hard to get," said Oswald, "So what we are doing is filling up the knowledge blank on humpback whales in the wild." Scientists should be able to use this information to help other lost whales in the future.

A.the whales traveled to Sacramento Bay B.he found the lost humpback whales
C.the scientists held a great celebration D.the whales returned to the Pacific Ocean

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four. Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner. I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang. Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
Later, the guests arrived. I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids. Each of the guests made a particular fuss over(过分爱护) Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big "to do" over the younger one because she's the one who seems more easily to be hurt. We do it with the best of intentions (意图).
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child. I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshone(使黯然失色). I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes. I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying. I said, "What are you doing, my dear " She turned to me with a sad expression and said, "Mommy, why don't people like me the way they like my sister Is it because I'm not pretty Is that why they don't say nice things about me as much " I tried to explain to her, kissing and hugging her to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend's home, I make it a point to speak to the elder child first.
1.What does the underlined expression "make a big 'to do' over" in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Show much concern about. B.Have a special effect on.
C.List jobs to be done for. D.Do good things for.
2.The guests praised Kelly for carrying coats upstairs because of her ______.
A.beautiful hair B.pretty clothes C.lovely smile D.young age
3.Why did Kristen feel sad and cry
A.She didn't look as pretty as Kelly.
B.The guests gave her more coats to carry.
C.The guests praised her little sister more than her.
D.Her mother didn't introduce her to the guests.
4.What does the author want to tell us
A.Adults should treat children equally.
B.People usually like the younger children more.
C.The younger children are usually more easily hurt.
D.Parents should pay more attention to the elder children.
D
The more curious we are about a topic, the easier it is to remember not only information about that topic, but also other unrelated information shown at the same time. A study published in Neuron shows what happens inside our brains when our curiosity is sparked.
Participants in the study were asked to rate(评估) how curious they were to find out the answer to a specific question, such as "What does the term 'dinosaur' actually mean " They were then placed in a magnetic resonance machine (磁共振机) that measures brain activity on the basis of changes in the blood flow when the brain is carrying out certain tasks. They saw the question again followed by the image of a person's face and were asked to make a specific decision about the person. Finally, they were shown the answer to the question. After the scan, they completed a surprise test on the answers to the questions and also on their ability to recognise the faces shown during the scan.
The research published three key findings. Firstly, when curious to learn the answer to a question people were better at learning that information. The most surprising was that participants had greater recall of the completely irrelevant information — such as the face — shown at the same time. Secondly, when curiosity was encouraged, the research found that there was increased activity in the region of the brain related to memory. And lastly, there was increased activity in the region of the brain connected with reward when curiosity was encouraged.
Behavioral neuroscientist Jee Hyun Kim said more could be done to see whether the different levels of curiosity and different motivations(动机) from person to person have an effect on memory and learning.
Amy Reichelt, a psychology expert, said, "Encouraging curiosity is really important across all ages, from schools to the workplace, and curiosity is especially helpful to children who struggle at school."
1.How did scientists learn about curiosity and the human brain
A.By showing people a picture of a dinosaur while they're in a magnetic resonance machine.
B.By asking people to remember important events while they're in a magnetic resonance machine.
C.By giving people quizzes and using a magnetic resonance machine to score each of the tests.
D.By asking people questions while a magnetic resonance machine measured their brain activity.
2.What does the underlined word "irrelevant" in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.Important. B.Unrelated. C.Detailed. D.Obvious.
3.What's Amy Reichelt's attitude towards curiosity in the passage
A.Disapproving. B.Cautious. C.Positive. D.Admiring.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The relationship between curiosity and motivations.
B.The influence curiosity has on memory and learning.
C.Motivations and rewards are more important than curiosity.
D.How rewards encourage curiosity across all ages in learning.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I handed the card from my school's help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort's Deli(熟食店). Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.
It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.
"Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don't like the way I do the job, don't pay me," I said. The tall man stared at me, and then nodded, "I'm Mort Robin. What's your name "
At Mort's, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. "How much did that card at school say this job paid " he asked. "One dollar an hour," I said in a low voice. Actually I was willing to take less.
"That's not enough for someone who works as hard as you," Mort said. "You start at 1.25." Over the next few weeks, I learned a lot about Mort. A few years older than my dad, he was from Chicago and had a daughter at my age. When business was slow, he often shared stories about his army days. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my struggling family.
One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large bald man in my father's chair. He was shouting at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. I had been in Los Angeles just long enough to understand how extremely important and necessary a car was. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due(应给的), but the man demanded the entire sum—$ 325, or the car.
I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $ 325 Who would even consider lending me so much money

第二节
答案:
The only person I could think of was Mort. Without hesitation I headed for the store, knocked at the door and waited anxiously. After a while, the door opened and there stood Mort, confused. Before he could ask me anything, I poured out what my family was facing. "So, could you possibly lend my father $ 325 " I could feel my face hot. Beyond my expectation, he turned around, returned with $ 325 in an envelope and handed it to me, saying "I'll take back half of your wages until it's repaid." "Thank you," I said in a trembling voice, trying to fight back my tears. Then I hurried back home.
I calmly handed the man the money. That night I was a hero to my family. But the real hero was Mort Robin, who not only helped my family out but also silently raised my salary every month. By summer, I was earning $ 2.50 an hour, which doubled the original wage. Finally, I paid off the debt. It was Mr. Robin who made the world a better place for me.
