Barbara McClintock was one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century. She made important discoveries about genes (基因) and chromosomes (染色体).
Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science.
She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.
Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed a master's degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for a doctorate.
McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her education. She taught students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the Great Depression. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand.
An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary (临时的) job in the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a permanent position in the laboratory. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without having to teach or repeatedly ask for economic aid.
By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.
1.When did McClintock receive her doctorate

A.Because of her research on botany.
B.Because of her discoveries about genes and chromosomes.
C.Because of her contribution to genetic engineering.
D.Because of her unshared work in the laboratory.
4.Where is the passage likely to appear
A.In a philosophy textbook. B.In a history paper.
C.In a travel brochure. D.In a biography.

Your colleague critical comment keeps replaying in your mind. Two of your friends are trapped in a "he said/she said" battle of wills. You can't shake the anxiety you feel after hearing the latest news. We hear that it's important to acknowledge and work through our emotional reactions to negative events, yet when we do, we sometimes get caught up in cycles of rumination(反刍)—which can make us feel even worse. So, what is the best way to reflect on difficult circumstances without finding ourselves tossed around in an emotional spin cycle
The answer may lie in a skill called "self-distancing", which features the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress.
But what might self-distancing look like in action These two fiends—well call them Tom and Jessica—feel wronged, and they replay their argument in their heads and out loud with you! Jessica is thinking, can't believe he did that to me. " And Tom insists, "She really hurt my feelings. They are each focusing on their own feelings. However, if you ask them to take the third-person perspective of a distanced observer, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions. Tom might literally wonder about himself, thinking in the third person, "Why was he so hurt in this situation " Or Jessica might ask, "How did these two people get to this point How did her anger affect him " Although this approach may sound too simple to be effective, numerous studies with children, adolescents, and adults (young and old) indicate that a shift in point of view can have a powerful effect on the way we think, feel, and behave.
1.Why are the difficult circumstances mentioned at the beginning of Paragraph 1
A.To show the seriousness of these problems.
B.To arouse readers' interest and introduce the topic.
C.To remind readers of the unhappy events.
D.To offer some ways to live in the present moment.
2.What does the text suggest people do about reflecting on negative events
A.Focus on the emotions in a direct way.
B.Acknowledge and work through the emotional reactions.
C.Talk about them and display suffering and stress.
D.Step back and view them as a distanced observer.
3.Which of the following adopts the self-distancing approach
A.I can't believe he did that to me. B.She really hurt my feelings.
C.How did her anger affect him D.How did we get to this point
4.What is the best tide for the passage
A.Self-Distancing Really Matters B.Applying Self-Distancing to Practice
C.Difficult to Reflect Try Self-Distancing D.Self-Distancing: No More Negative Events
D
When we talk about positive thinking, we often use terms concerning our hearts—open heart, pure heart or joyful heart. But new research from Duke University is making a closer connection, finding that a positive attitude may be helpful to people who have angina(心绞痛), a common heart condition.
Symptoms of this condition include chest pain or pressure because the heart is not receiving sufficient oxygen. Patients who displayed optimistic thought patterns, including having positive expectations of recovery, were 40 per cent less likely to be hospitalised or require surgery than those who were not optimistic, according to the study. The researchers collected data from 2,400 patients who had been diagnosed with angina.
An interesting additional finding from the patients' questionnaires was that the most optimistic patients were a also the least likely to have histories of heart attacks, heart failure or other heart diseases.
The researchers did not declare a causal relationship between positive thinking and better heart disease outcomes, however. There are multiple possible reasons for the results of the study, including the idea that patients who are healthier in the beginning are more likely to expect to recover and regain good health.
But the study does represent a new way of looking at the situation. Now, in addition to a body of research that examines the relationship between depression and heart health, there is a new way of enquiry that asks whether positive thinking could be used as a strategy to improve the outcomes.
Lead researcher Alexander Fanaroff, a fellow in the Division of Cardiology(心脏病学) at Duke University Medical Center, told Duke Chronicle that his next research will find ways to improve attitudes among heart patients.
Perhaps his subjects could reflect on the words of the writer Anthony J.D'Angelo: "Smile, it is the key that fits the lock of everybody's heart."
1.How can people with angina get better according to the study
A.By expecting more. B.By thinking positively.
C.By getting timely surgery. D.By taking more exercise.
2.What may be the aim of Alexander Fanaroff's next research
A.To explore how to improve patients' attitudes.
B.To find out the ways to treat heart patients.
C.To learn the causes of heart diseases.
D.To test if positive attitudes help with health.
3.What can we learn from the text
A.Optimistic people hardly have a heart attack.
B.People's attitudes affect their overall health.
C.How positive thinking benefits heart health is unclear.
D.The reason why patients recover well is that they have no depression.
4.What may be the best title for the text
A.Keep Positive to Get Rid of Illnesse
B.Angina, a Kind of Serious Condition
C.Depression, a Key Cause of the Heart Attack
D.Positive Thinking Makes Hearts Healthier

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My husband hasn't stopped laughing about a funny thing that happened to me. It is funny now but it wasn't at that time.
Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop—that was a cheap, self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place and went to get a cup of coffee.
When I came back with the coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those wild-looking teenagers, with dark glasses and torn clothes, and hair coloured bright red at the front, not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he had started to eat my chocolate!
Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble—then really I was rather uneasy about him—I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee, and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took another piece of my chocolate, I could hardly believe it. Still I didn't want to start an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than annoyed. I thought, "Well, I shall have the last piece." And I got it.
The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left, he shouted out, "This woman is mad!" Everyone stared at me. That was really embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red—as red as his hair when I realised I'd made a mistake. It wasn't my chocolate he'd been taking. There was mine, unopened, just under my newspaper.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

What's more, the boy ate my chocolate time after time without asking for my permission. When I was finally aware of the truth, I knew I had wronged him and I felt sorry for this. You can imagine how embarrassed I was to have made a mistake like this in the presence of so many passengers. I wanted to see him, explain it to him and admit my fault.
Now I am wondering what the boy thought of me. Maybe at that time he felt as annoyed as me, thinking that there should be such a woman in the world who was so greedy as to eat others' chocolate. Maybe he also felt it was a funny thing and shared the amusing story with his classmates. Or perhaps now, he has forgotten the whole incident already. But no matter which case it is, I sincerely hope that such embarrassing things will never happen again.
