①It’s true that life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. We will experience happy ties, and we can also go through hard times.
②Last year, I decided to go camping with my family. It was a fine day. We got everything we needed and set out early in the morning. After a three-hour drive, we arrived at our destination (目的地).
③We put up a tent together and lit a fire. Then I went to take care of my little sister, and my brother went fishing in the nearby river. Suddenly, the weather became bad, and soon it began to rain cats and dogs. Dad shouted, “Get in the tent!” The small tent protected us from the heavy rain. Luckily, it wasn’t broken. Then I realized my brother didn’t appear. Without thinking, I ran to the river to look for him, but there was no race (踪迹). I felt worried.
④I walked along the river, and suddenly, I saw some footprints! I was excited and followed them until I found my brother in the middle of the river. I noticed a long rope under a big tree. I threw it to him and pulled him up.
⑤The success of saving my brother from danger gave me greater pleasure than camping. I learned that it is good to help others and see smiles on their faces.

Two years ago, I went to Taiwan, along with my family. Taiwan, China’s biggest island, lies in southeastern China. It’s separated from the Chinese mainland by the Taiwan Strait.
On the trip, we visited the beautiful Sun Moon Lake. ① Standing in a cable car (缆车), I looked down at the amazing views below. It looked as if it had been made by a great master. ② The clear water and beautiful forests made me feel as if I were in heaven (天堂). ③ Many famous works were on show there. When I was walking along the hall, the unpleasant history of our country passed through my mind. ④As the Chinese saying goes: “Falling behind will suffer (遭受) beating.” I realized the great importance of self-improvement.
Taiwan is rich in nature. There are not only lovely animals, but also delicious fruits, such as pineapples, wax apples, and many more. I ate much fruit every day during my stay there.
As for the local people, they were very friendly. Take my personal experience as a real example: I bought a T-shirt as a gift for my father without telling him. But the size wasn’t suitable. I didn’t know what to do. I called the mall hopelessly. To my surprise, the salesman listened to me patiently and told me that he could help me to change the size and send it back to our hotel as long as I could return the other one to him. His warm voice is still in my mind.
Anyone who visits this island for the first time will fall in love with it right away. If you aren’t sure about where to take a vacation, Taiwan should be at the top of your list.

Dr. Charlotte Uhlenbroek recently returned to London after filming her second series, Jungle. It was difficult, 19-week trip, during which she explored the rainforests of Borneo, the Amazon and Congo, travelling around using variety of means of transport, including hot-air balloons and canoes. "I'm interested in the way animals communicate with each other. It was sometimes dangerous making the program—I even went swimming with piranha(水虎鱼) fish. But the worst thing was insects. On one occasion, I had 70sand-fly bites on my arm. Luckily, I didn't get sick. I prefer not to take tablets every day, but if I get a fever, take some medicine immediately."
Filming the series was exciting, but also frightening at times. Her most challenging experience was climbing a 100-meter tree in Borneo, as she has a great fear of heights. "I had to keep pulling myself further and further upwards. All I wanted to do was get down again. Suddenly the safety equipment didn't look very strong and I thought that my ropes would break and I would crash to the ground."
What did she enjoy most about returning to London "When I've been away in hot uncomfortable conditions for a long time I dream about an ice-cold drink and my bed at home! But the thing I look forward to the most is nice long showers. There wasn't much water in some of the places we visited and I worried that I was using it all up and not leaving any for my colleagues on the camera team!"

D.Insects, piranha fish, hot-air balloons—it's all in one day's work for Charlotte in her latest series.
Imagine getting the chance to go camping for five days. It would be an adventure in the wild. You could go boating on a lake every day and leave your smartphone at home. Would you want to try this
In June, four teenage girls from Minnesota, the US, went camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. They had a great time—even without their smartphones. Ji Ruelle, 16 years old, put the group together. Earlier this year, she won an writing competition provided by a company. The prize was a five-day camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. This adventure was supposed to encourage kids to be less dependent on technology.
Ruelle had been to the area before, but she had always gone with her parents. Sharing the experience with friends would be very different. She invited three friends: Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson and Julianna Torelli.
They came up with a daily plan. “We would wake up early every day. We would do watersports by noon. We ate lunch at the camp. Then it was time for hammocks(吊床), reading, writing, making friendship rings, talking and resting,” Ruelle said.
“I’m a lot less worried about things,” Wander said when asked how she felt without her smartphone. Her favourite thing was to lie in her hammock, looking at the lake. Torelli enjoyed cooking. She made blueberry pancakes and sandwiches.
“No one felt hungry or homesick. Mental health can be improved so much. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself,” Ruelle said.

When Alfred the horse arrives with a brightly painted caravan(大篷车), Toad, Rat and Mole jump into a seat at the front of the caravan. “Forget boats and the river. Mole. Travel the world in a caravan. Come on my travels with me. This is the way to travel,” Toad says. “Moving slowly through the countryside, enjoying the scenery.”
Suddenly, they hear “Toot! Toot!” and see a car coming toward them. Alfred has to quickly pull the caravan to the side of the road. Toad falls off the seat and into a bush. Mole and Rat almost fall off the seat, too, but they are able to hold on.

“Are you all right, Toad Rat asks.
Toad opens his eyes, saying “Toot! Toot!”

“Toot! Toot! It’s the sound that car makes.”
“ I know,” Rat says. “And it almost kills us.”
“Toot! Toot!” Toad says again.
“I think Toad has hurt his head,” Rat says to Mole.
“He’s not well. He’s making a noise like a car.” Then he says to Toad, “We’ll go to the police station and complain about the driver of the car.”
Toad sits up.
“Complain! Complain! We will not complain. That wonderful, beautiful car is the way to travel. Fast! Toot! Toot! I don’t want them. I’m going to get a car like that.”
After Mole and Rat listen to Toad, they take him back to his home.

My father and I went back to my hometown—Zibo in Shandong on May 5th to try Zibo barbecue.
Recently, the local food has become so popular that people all over China travel there to taste it.
On the way to Zibo, my father told me a story. Last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of college students were stuck in Zibo. The local government helped students to get through that period and offered a great barbecue dinner when the quarantine (隔离) was over. The government officers also invited the students to come back to Zibo again when spring came. I was moved when I heard this.
At 5 p.m., we arrived at the restaurant. My father had booked a table two days earlier. There are some differences between Zibo’s barbecue and the ones in other cities. Zibo’s barbecue restaurants have a small grill (烤架) on each table. People need to cook on the grill by themselves. When the food is ready, you put it onto a small pancake, and then add scallions (葱) and sauce before eating.
People in the restaurant didn’t know each other before. But we just talked naturally about daily life and sang together. The boss of the restaurant even danced. Some local people even put off their orders when they heard there weren’t enough seats. They wanted tourists from other places to have the chance to eat.

Chris recently completed a very unusual journey. Our reporter Mary met him at his home in south London and he told her all about the trip.
Reporter: What gave you the idea to travel around India on an elephant, Chris
Chris: Well, it all started two years ago when I was planning a trip to India. I visited a photographic (摄影的)exhibition of elephants and I realized that the only way to travel around India was on an elephant.
Reporter: What did you do next
Chris: I flew to New Delhi and started looking for an elephant. I needed an elephant trained to carry people. I didn’t know anything about elephants, so I asked an expert for help. He taught me how to ride an elephant. He also helped me find an elephant.
Reporter: How long did it take to find a suitable elephant
Chris: Not too long. I bought a female elephant called Tara for about USD 6, 000.
Reporter: Can you tell me about the journey
Chris: Tara and I set off from New Delhi a week later. We were heading to Sonepur in northern India where there is a big elephant market and I could sell Tara easily. And what a ride! Elephants can travel at about 6 miles an hour and Sonepur was more than 1, 200 km away. It took us 64 days to complete the journey.
Reporter: Did you have any problems on your journey
Chris: Yes, a few. But nothing serious. On the third day, Tara hurt her foot. But that got better quickly. Also, there was a lot of heavy rain during the first week and we got very wet!
Reporter: What happened when you reached Sonepur
Chris: My plan was to sell Tara. But by now I was very fond of her. I couldn’t take her back to Britain and I didn’t want to sell her at the market. By chance, I met some people who wanted an elephant for their national park in southern India. I knew that Tara would be safe with them, so I gave her to them. I was very sad to say goodbye.

We are traveling in New Zealand these days. We arrived here on Wednesday night. On Thursday we crossed the Southern Alps. It took hours. We drove through Arthur’s Pass and then stopped to look at the mountains. The top looked a bit like black and white pictures, with their bright white snow and big black rocks. We stayed for the night in Greymouth, where we bought some books.
Yesterday we drove on to see the famous Franz Josef Glacier (冰川). First we left our things in our hotel and then we set out to walk to the glacier. It took a long, long time to walk over the rocks in the bottom and when we got to the wall of the glacier we were very thirsty. We broke off a tiny bit of ice and tasted it. We were drinking water that was thousands of years old. It was much nicer than the ice from the fridge.
Today we drove to the Fox Glacier. Someone had told Dad about a lake on the way, so we went there first. We had to walk through a dark forest to find Lake Matheson. It was a very cold lake because all its water came from the glacier.
It was too late in the day to reach the Fox Glacier. We stayed in the car park to watch great big green-brown parrots. I used to consider parrots sweet and lovely, but these birds were not. They were walking all over the cars in the car park, pulling soft parts off with their bills (喙). They even broke off windscreen wipers (雨刮器).
Tomorrow we have to get up early because we are flying to the top of Franz Josef in a plane. I am looking forward to that because the top of the glacier is all deep snow. So far we have only seen the front ends of glaciers.

My father was born in a small town in the US. He wanted to get out and began a new adventure. He began that adventure by travelling to different cities in the US before going on to other countries. He took his wife and three daughters with him and went wherever the road took him. It’s easy to feel lonely when you’re on the road. As my mother said repeatedly, “We made lots of new friends on our trip—most of them were workers who fix cars, since we often spent hours in repair shops during the journey.”
Getting along well with each other sometimes seemed impossible. There were always a lot of arguments among us back-seat passengers about who had to sit in the middle.
But even if it was hard, we did learn a lot about forgiveness.
When in the Philippines, we drove to Quezon City one day. It should have been a one-hour drive but was nearly three, thanks to bad roads and worse traffic. “Did you put our suitcases in the car ” my father asked my mother as we arrived. “No,” she said. “I thought you did.” That was how a 7-hour car trip turned into a 16-hour car trip, which was mostly spent in silence.
In situations like that, we had to learn to let go of our anger. We were stuck in a rolling box with the same people for the rest of the journey. Even if I sometimes felt like opening the car door and pushing one of my sisters out, I kept my feelings to myself.
This is why road trips were like moving universities to us. We got our PhDs (博士学位) in how to get along with other people just by traveling in that old car.
