The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual event in New York by the department store. Macy’s. It is the world’s largest and second oldest parade. The event is held in Manhattan from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving Day.
In 1924, Macy’s store workers marched to their store in Herald Square, dressing as cowboys, clowns and knights. They went from 145th Street to the store, making a 6-mile route. There were floats, bands and 25 live animals borrowed from the zoo. With an audience of over 250,000 people, the parade was such a success that Macy’s decided to hold it every year.
Four years later, balloons replaced the live animals. Over the years, they have become a key feature of the parade. These six-storey-tall balloons are modeled after pop cartoon and culture characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Snoopy and Spider-Man. Another key part of the parade is floats with famous people and musicians. The most famous float, Tom Turkey, was introduced in 1973 and became the parade’s mascot. It generally leads the parade as the first float. In the parade, there are also college bands, singers, dancers and performers. The last person to appear is Santa Claus, who ends the event by arriving into Herald Square to ring in the Christmas season.
The route has been changed three times. The latest one was made in 2009. It starts at the corner of 77th Street and travels south to Columbus Circle, where it turns east onto Central Park South before turning on to 6th Avenue. After traveling down 6th Avenue to 34th Street, the parade turns right and ends at Macy’s in Herald Square.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a true New York experience and attracts over 2.5 million people every year.

On Nov. 11, there is a holiday created by Chinese people for singles (单身人士). It is known as Singles’ Day. It has become the biggest online shopping day in the world. T-mall, Taobao, Pinduoduo and many other online shopping sites offer huge discounts (打折扣) on this day to attract shoppers. Take T-mall as an example, on November 11, 2021, T-mall’s sales reached 540 billion yuan.
There are similar shopping days in the United States. The most well-known of these is Black Friday. It always falls on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. On this day, stores offer special deals, just like on Singles’ Day.
On Black Friday, shoppers will wake up very early to wait in line at stores before they open. They might start waiting in line as early as 2 or 3 a.m. Sometimes the crowds will be so big that it is impossible to get inside the stores.
Another similar holiday is Cyber (网络的) Monday. This day always falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving. It is like Singles’ Day, since it is only for online shopping.
Personally, I don’t like any of these holidays. They place too much importance on buying things. I prefer to celebrate Buy Nothing Day. It is a “holiday” that falls on the same day as Black Friday. Last week, City Daily did a survey about “How do Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival ” and “How do Americans celebrate Christmas ” About 500 Chinese people and 300 Americans took part in the online survey. Here are the results.
Such a survey can be naturally connected with the importance of Spring Festival for Chinese people, but what results in these differences To my understanding, at least two reasons can explain this result. For one thing, Chinese people have a strong sense of family, which enables many people to celebrate Spring Festival together with family members or relatives. For another, compared with before, some people are richer, and they have more freedom during the vacation. So, many people choose to celebrate this holiday by traveling. As for Americans, they prefer travelling. In fact, Americans like traveling on vacations, not only Christmas. Americans like exercising. There are no parks with fitness equipment (健身器材) in the US. If there's one thing I've learned from my years of being a kid, it's that you have ZERO control over your own life.
Ever since school ended, I haven't had anything I've needed to do or anywhere I've needed to be. As long as the air-conditioning was working and the TV remote had batteries in it, I was ready for a relaxing summer holiday.
But then, out of the blue, this happened--"Pack your bags. We're going on a road trip!" Momsaid excitedly.
This isn't the first time Mom has sprung a trip on us without any warning. Last year on me first day of summer, she said we were going to visit Aunt Loretta at the nursing home.
It wasn't my idea of a fun way to kick off the summer. One time when we visited Aunt Loretta, her roommate grasped me and wouldn't let me go until someone gave her a chocolate cookie:
Mom kept talking about going to the nursing home for a whole day, which made me worry a lot. But at breakfast the next morning, she told us where we were really going--Disney World.
I was very happy, because I was really worried about spending the whole week at the nursing home. So was Dad.
But when my little brother, Danny, heard about the change he became very angry. Mom had talked up the Aunt Loretta trip so much that Danny was actually excited about going there.
We ended up putting off our trip to Disney so we could visit Aunt Loretta.

In many countries around the world, May 1st is a holiday which is called Labor Day or Workers’ Day. It is an interesting holiday that honors (授予……荣誉) working men and women and their jobs. During the late 1880s, in many parts of the world, people worked for fourteen to sixteen hours a day in factories, but made very little money. Later, in the United States and Canada, working people got together to set up unions (工会). On May 1st, 1886, men and women in the United States and Canada stopped working and went onto the streets. They walked through cities and towns to force bosses to let them work eight hours a day. In the city of Chicago, several people died in fighting with the police. Over the next few years, people in cities around the world stopped working on May 1st to honor workers everywhere. You see people in movies celebrating a white Christmas in England or the United States. But Christmas in Australia is different.
Australians celebrate the holiday on Dec.25th. It is at the hottest time of the year in Australia. The temperature is usually about 30°C in most cities and can even be over 40°C. There is certainly no white Christmas in Australia.
Because it is so hot, the tradition is to have a lunch outside and to swim in the pool or beach. Most people have a one-week holiday during this time, so they will travel to meet their family for Christmas lunch. Christmas lunch is usually a big meal of ham, turkey, salad and fresh seafood. Family members all cook something different and bring it to the big meal. I always enjoy Christmas lunch because there are lots of good cooks in my family. One year my aunt even made a delicious gingerbread house(姜饼屋) for us to eat as dessert.
Children get presents from Santa Claus and are always excited to play with them. It is a fun time to play or swim in the pool with the other members of your family.
The sport of cricket(板球) is very popular in Australia and another tradition is to play a game of cricket in your backyard. I always enjoyed playing with my uncle and cousins when I was growing up.
So Australia might not have a white Christmas. But it is still a very exciting and fun time of the year.
