“How was school today ” Ethan’s mom asked as he climbed into the car.
“Fine.” Ethan answered.
“What did you do ” she tried to start a conversation.
“Nothing.” Ethan answered and turned his attention to his phone.
Ethan’s mom sighed. “Your grandmother and I used to have actual conversations.”
“Huh ” Ethan wasn’t really listening.
“Nothing,” his mother said sadly.
Ten minutes later, Ethan finally looked up from his phone. What are we doing here He asked, noticing they were at an unknown supermarket.
“Grandma is coming over for dinner tonight and we need to buy something for her favorite strawberry cheesecake. I thought you could help me make it.”
Ethan hated shopping, and he would play his favorite video game rather than bake for a whole afternoon. However, he knew his grandmother would love the cheesecake.
Surprisingly, Ethan realized that he enjoyed shopping and he was also having fun in the kitchen helping his mom after they got home. While all of this was happening, the two actually talked, and Ethan remembered several interesting things from school.
It was great to see his grandmother again at dinner too. The last time they met was several weeks ago, and he realized that he had a lot to tell her.
“Wow, Ethan, I don’t think I’ve heard you speak this much in a long time,” Ethan’s mom smiled.
“Well, when you were Ethan’s age, Norah,” Ethan’s grandmother said gently to his mother, “you used to spend your whole life in your room!”
Ethan’s mother turned pink, “That’s not true, mom!”
“In fact,” Ethan’s grandmother winked (眨眼) at Ethan, “I had to get her to help me make this very cheesecake to even get her to talk to me.”

Both of my two sons were born in Toronto, but they moved with us to Ottawa when they were quite young. They went to school there, grew up there. Later, one of my sons went to Canada’s east coast near a city called Halifax and the other moved to the west coast to Vancouver. My wife and I were left in the middle.
As we nearly retired (退休), we started to think where we should spend our final years. For several reasons we decided to live on a small town on Vancouver Island, where was close to one of my sons. However, the son moved to Hollywood soon after he had got another job there. I helped him move.
We still lived a happy life in our little west coast town, but we have paid a price. We have not been there for some important events such as the births of our grandchildren. We have missed watching them grow up; we have missed backyard barbecues (烧烤) and basketball weekends with them. Our home, while very comfortable, was also very quiet.
Every fall we travel to see the children. We usually fly, first to California to see our son Scott and spend a week or more with him trying to catch up on everything we’ve missed. Then, usually in November, we make the even longer trip east across Canada to see Travis and our grandchildren, who were about their twenties.
Fortunately, both our sons are doing well and grandchildren are growing up straight and tall. We love all of them and they love us. We’re very happy but there are times I think about the things we didn’t see: the tears or the smile on the granddaughter’s face, their school graduations, my son’s joy at successes in business.
Life has been good for our family but we have all paid a price.

Lisa stood next to her tall silent grandfather and watched her parents drive off, leaving her behind. She looked up at her grandfather. He looked down at her. His skin was a little darker than hers. His hair was black and white, as if it couldn’t decide which color it should be.
“You don’t talk much, Grandpa,” Lisa said.
“You don’t visit much, Lisa,” her grandfather replied.
They stood looking at each other. “Come with me, Lisa,” said Grandpa. He started walking without looking back.

“You coming ” Grandpa’s voice sounded muffled. His words were coming from inside the storehouse.

Lisa bent down and opened it. In it were some old things—a bright blue feather, a tiny V-shape leaf and some dolls. She looked up at Grandpa, with tears in her eyes.
“The box stays here, but it belonged to you. No one else.” Then he closed his eyes and smiled. His smile reminded Lisa of her father. Grandpa no longer seemed strange and silent.
“I may be so overcapitalized (过剩),” Lisa answered, carefully pronouncing the familiar word.
Grandpa laughed out loud. “How did that eight-year-old brain of yours find its way around a big word like ‘overcapitalized’ ”
“It’s my dad’s favourite word,” Lisa replied.
Grandpa looked down at Lisa and smiled. His smile again reminded Lisa of her father. Without thinking, she reached up and took Grandpa’s hand. Lisa’s hand felt small and safe inside her grandfather’s.

When did you last say “I love you” to your father If you can’t remember, then you can get the chance this Father’s Day on June 18.
Generally compared to a mother’s gentle love, a father represents (代表) qualities like independence (独立), confidence, courage and adventure.
Also, a caring father can help their children get along with others, according to a study on Live Science. Fathers not only lead their children into their social circle but also teach them how to act and control their feelings.
For example, Microsoft founder Bill Gates was quiet and didn’t like to talk with others when he was a little kid. So his father often held family parties and let Bill play games with family members. “Games like soccer and swimming seemed to be silly at that time, but they improved my ability of leading and cooperating (合作),” Gates once said in an interview with US Fortune magazine.
US actor Will Smith learned important lessons from small things taught by his father. His father once planned to pull down a wall of their shop and rebuild it. But little Will thought it was impossible. After a year and a half, they did it. “You don’t try to build a wall. You are going to lay a brick (砖) every day. And soon you have a wall,” he said on TV show Charlie Rose (《查理·罗斯访谈录》).
“One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters,” British poet George Herbert (1593—1632) once said. Do you agree

My mom never took herself too seriously. She just wanted everyone to be happy, and we loved her for it. Even when I was upset with her for not letting me stay overnight with my friends, or when she expressed disappointment that I couldn’t bring my grades up, I still loved her so much. She respected my privacy (隐私). And if I ever needed to talk, she would leave her door wide open and listen to me carefully. But I remember her as perfect, not because she did everything right, but because she tried to know me, to connect with me, and to always make me feel safe and loved.
Ten years after her death, I welcomed my own child into the world. At the beginning, I was just angry. Angry that this new person would never get to know her wonderful grandmother. Angry that I couldn’t pick up the phone and ask my mom how she dealt with this or that. I missed her love. I just missed her.
Later, I accepted and tried to change the situation. How can I give my daughter what my mom managed to give me Could I be easygoing like her Will my daughter feel as loved as I did
Now, I see all of these things in myself, and in my daughter, and think to myself, “That’s mom.” I realize this, and I can almost see my mom smiling as if she were standing right there with me. And I smile too.

Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which made the comb two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say, “Be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK ”
I was more than happy to do it. I would excitedly brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied that I’d done a good job, I would proudly return the comb to Dad. He would smile at me and place the comb on top of his wallet.
About two years later, Dad started his own wholesale business. I started primary school. That was when things started to change. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. I stopped waiting for him to come home.
Today, I’m no longer a kid. I’ve graduated from college and got a job. Dad’s business has gotten back on track. Things are better now. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me continued.
Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. He said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb ” I looked at him for a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.

He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still as heartwarming as before. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family. Many studies show people who have more control over their own lives are healthier, happier and more likely to have better social relationships.
Teens don’t have the same ability to make decisions as an adult. They are less likely to notice and plan for risk. They lack an adult’s self-control skills. But they want to have full control over what they do, who they spend time with and how they make decisions.
So as parents, what should they do In fact, their right role as parents is that of coaches. As coaches, they do three things.
First, these parent-coaches always keep an eye out for what skills a teenager needs to build. They have many conversations with their kids to build skills. What went wrong there How might that be different What would you do if this event happened when you were out at night How do you avoid the temptation (诱惑) to go online when you should be studying
Secondly, these parent-coaches allow teens to experience the results of their poor decisions. If you don’t get that homework finished, then you will have to discuss that yourself with your teacher. If you get home so late and you can’t get up for your housework tasks the next day, then you’ll need to spend time doing it later instead of going out again.
Thirdly, these parent-coaches take every chance to cheer madly for their teens. I love the way you did... Thanks so much for... I appreciated (欣赏) it when you... I love talking to you about...
Coaching teens can be scary, tiring and frustrating (令人沮丧的). It’s far easier to take over. But coaching leads to happier, better adjusted (调整) teens who are more prepared for adulthood.

“Come to the kitchen, young lady,” Mom firmly (坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone (语气) of voice.
Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”
Mom called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.”
While Felicia was on her way, Mom put two chairs opposite to each other but very close together. “Maria, you sit here and Felicia, you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes,” Mom ordered.
At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mom said firmly, “You must stay staring at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact means another minute sitting in the chairs.” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and look at each other.

Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into a battle Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
Teenagers’ physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may be nervous that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first targets (目标) of your anger.
It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle ground-no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new expectation for independence and a continued need for your parents’ love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. “Why can’t they just let me go ” you may wonder. On the other hand, when you are struggling to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient-sometimes they forget that growing up is a hard ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.
Although sometimes it may seem impossible to get along as a family, you can take action to improve the situation. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and address their concerns. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.
Just remember that it is completely normal to struggle with the stress that parent-child tensions create, and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy period will not last. Everything will turn out all night in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.

Love, joy and the warm feeling of getting together don’t cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So what should a poor family do
When I was 10, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted for the New Year was a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷). However, my mother said it was so expensive that we couldn’t afford one.
On a Saturday before New Year, my family went shopping together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts, my dad said, “I’ll be back soon-I need to see something in the tool area.” A moment later, he came back with a long box. I remembered wondering if there was a pogo stick in it.
When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so excited and I knew as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom(扫帚).
