Each September in the UK, thousands of new students move t0 new cities to start their university life with “freshers’ week”. For the new students, they can find their way around and get to know their new student life. I talked to two freshers about their experiences, which may be helpful to you.
John, Sheffield University
When my parents left, I felt a bit sad and lonely, but it didn’t take long for Sarah to knock on the door and say hello. The next day I made my choices about the courses I was going to study. Then I went over to the Student Union. The Student Union is great because there were lots of facilities (设施), such as a shop, a laundry and a job-shop. In fact, that’s where I found a part-time job in the university restaurant.
Gemma, Southampton University
Freshers’ week was so exciting. In the beginning, I should make some choices about the courses. And I wanted to join all the student clubs, but in the end, I joined the dance club, hillwalking club and surfing club. I probably should have joined just one or two clubs, as now I find I don’t have enough time. The best for me was the freshers’ parties. I had a great time. I suppose I went a bit crazy and spent a lot of money!
As for me, when I started university, I was lucky enough to meet my friend Cath on the first night of freshers' week. And we decided to choose the same courses... Who would have thought back then that over twenty years later I would still be friends with Cath on Facebook!

Last fall, my classmates and I visited Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary, which lies in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Although our stay was short, it turned out to be the most unforgettable experience of our holiday.
As soon as we arrived there, we headed to the base (基地) to learn about the elephants in the village. The eldest, Too Mch, had once spent much of her life giving tourists rides with a heavy seat on her back. Her daughter, Mac Doom, and grandsons, Dodo and Gen Thong had also spent years doing hard work for tourists. It broke our hearts to hear their sad stories.
Early the next morning, we saw Too Mch and Mac Doom walking in the forest and Dodo playing by the river. Seeing them free was a heartwarming experience. Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary was founded in 1989, with the purpose of protecting the elephants in the wild. And since then, this place hasn’t offered elephant rides or elephant performances any longer. Instead, it tries to educate visitors about these amazing animals.
But we did more than just get to know the elephants. We also cooked and ate together with our host family, learned about the language of the local people, and taught English to the children in the village. In doing these activities, we were able to experience the local customs and culture. By providing such chances for visitors, the place gives back to the village by helping the villagers make more money, It’s a win-win situation.
It you want to see elephants in their natural environment, Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary is the nice place to go. It will be an experience you won’t forget.

A company called Neuralink has shared a video, which appears to show a monkey playing a video game. That’s quite unusual, but what makes the video even stranger is that the monkey is playing the video game with just its mind.
The monkey in the video is called Pager, and he has two of Neuralink’s special “Link” devices (装置) inside his head.
At first, ___A___. Scientists gave Pager a banana when he played the game with a joystick. Soon Pager was able to play well in order to get more. As Pager played, the “Link” devices sent out information about the signals of his brain (大脑).
Then, they used computers to match the signals of Pager’s brain with the movements that his hands were doing. The work was not easy, and the scientists depended on artificial intelligence (Al) to help them record Pager’s brain signals (信号).
The final step was to have a computer make moves in the video game. Pager didn’t need to use the joystick to play the game. If he thought about moving the joystick up, the computer would send an “up” signal to the video game.
Now Neuralink mainly works on animals and video games, but there’s a very “serious purpose” behind it. Neuralink wants to help the people who have lost the ability to move their bodies. When people are paralyzed (瘫痪的),it’s often because the brain has lost the ability to send signals to certain parts of the body.
Mr. Musk says that in the near future Neuralink hopes to allow a paralyzed person to use a smartphone just by thinking. He believes its system will be able to send this information in a different way, allowing paralyzed people to use their arms or legs again.

When I was in my 40s, I got a call from my father. He'd been tidying up an old shelf and discovered letters from a great-great-uncle, Charles Kelley. They dated to 1922, when Charles was told that he had got Type 1 diabetes(糖尿病). At that time, Type 1 diabetes was a deadly illness.
Somehow my uncle from Huron, South Dakota, made his way to the Mayo Hospital in Minnesota, where doctors were testing a new medicine. Charles was accepted as one of the guinea pigs(a kind of animal). He noted down that each day's injection (注射) cost him quite a lot of money, though luckily he could afford it.
By the time the University of Toronto team of doctors, who invented insulin(胰岛素), won a Nobel Prize in 1923, Uncle Charles had been back in Huron. The medicine gave him 20 more years of life.
Needless to say, this family secret was helpful to me. When I was in my 20s, I returned home from college because I was tired all day, and I went to see my doctor. He called the next day to tell me that I had Type 1 diabetes. It was a big hit, totally out of blue. There was no history of diabetes in my family.
For 20 years, I injected my insulin and took care of myself, but still I felt orphaned because of my illness. I couldn't explain why I had such kind of illness, the only one in my family. Charles’s story changed that. I'm thankful for my uncle Charles's late messages across years, they told me that I wasn’t alone.

Besides, the 3d-printing technology will be good for humans, too, Although it faces many problems: Are the things used to print safe Is a 3d-printed part strong enough How are we sure that a 3d-printed part will perfectly fit a person's body But once animals use these parts freely, then we’ll be more confident that 3d-printed parts could be used on humans.
So, what will be the next They could be 3d-printed fingers, ears or other parts of our body, which will help the disabled be new-born people.
