The bell rang, announcing the end of the vivid art class Karson loved most. He was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karson picked it up. His heat beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karson’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karson looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected early in the morning.
Karson decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “It’s ‘finders keepers’, right ” he wondered. He looked out of the window
and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need tis extra ticket for his great plan!

Buried in the snow
Snow was falling across Canadian Rocky Mountains in March, lasting for days. From his home, Allen watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Lucy, had planned to go out for holiday, but now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were caught in a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and tired out. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
When they awoke the next day, they found the snow had continued overnight. The cars in the parking lot were hidden under the snow. While they were having breakfast, the hotel began to shake .An earthquake with a magnitude (震级) of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Let’s get out of here!” Allen shouted to his wife. They made their way to the parking lot, where others were digging out their cars.
With most cars freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a two-meter-high wall of snow. Allen climbed out of his car to check. There was no road in sight. “We’re trapped!” he told his wife. With no other choice, they made their way back to the hotel.
They managed to get back to the hotel before dark. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche ( 雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed, taking away rocks and trees and anything else in its way as it flowed down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those trapped inside the hotel were buried in the icy ruins.

I had an independent and clever dog named Stickeen. He enjoyed the delicious food that my family prepared for him every day. He often ran out of my sight when walking with me.
Early one morning, I went to explore a nearby glacier (冰川). Stickeen followed me, and together we went
upon the glacier. Later, I discovered that we were trapped between two very deep cracks (裂缝) in the glacier. The only way across it was a very thin ice that connected the cracks. I made a path across the “bridge” and got to the other side. But my dog was afraid to have a try and began to cry. After taking another careful look at the large cracks, he ran away hopelessly to find some other crossings. By the time he got back, he was confused of course.
When I reached the other side, he screamed louder than ever, and after running back and forth without searching for a good way to escape, he would return to the edge (边缘) of the crack, crying as if in the sadness of death. I called again and again in a sure voice to come on and fear nothing, but he would think for a moment, look down again at the “bridge”, and shout his unshakable thought that he could never, never come that way, and then lie back hopelessly, as if screaming, “O-o-oh! What a place! No-o-o, I can never go-o-o down there!” At last, I seriously shouted to him that now I must certainly leave him and I could wait no longer if he could not come.

My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends Would If it in Would I survive in this strange new world Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
The none day, at all boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us ” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I

My name is Maeli. I am so lucky, because I have Lizzy Jo. She is my cousin and my friend! We are close. We talk about everything from our dreams, our sad things to the things we value most such as her beautiful
bracelets (手链) and my beads (有孔的珠子).
Yesterday our teacher brought out a big box just before the last bell rang. “I have a little gift for each of you,” she said. Then she gave each of us a perfect popcorn ball. Each popcorn ball was in clear bag that was tied with a ribbon (丝带). Just that little ribbon made the gift look so fancy! Sometimes, it’s the tiny details that make things special.
I happen to have a great appreciation for popcorn balls, so I was pleased. Lizzy Jo and I rode the bus home. The moment I was off the bus, I untied the ribbon and put it into my pocket. Then I took the popcorn ball out of the plastic bag. I didn’t even stop walking. Unfortunately, my feet were in a big hurry to get home, and sometimes when feet are in a hurry, they trip.
My feet tripped. I fell. And my perfect popcorn ball dropped right into a dirty puddle (水坑). I was okay, but my popcorn ball wasn’t. Have you ever seen a perfect popcorn ball in a dirty puddle It isn’t something that you want to take a photo of and frame and keep forever.
I looked at my popcorn ball. That moment definitely was NOT the time to use the two second rule. Last week at my grandma’s house I used the two second rule. I accidentally dropped my cookie on her floor. I picked it up REALLY fast, and I admit that I ate that cookie. But this was a very different situation. This involved a puddle. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

It was Friday at the end of a really, really long week. My husband Mike and I were inviting friends over for dinner.
Just before I got home, Mike texted me to say that he had to stay late at work. I had to prepare everything for the night on my own. Already late myself, I could feel my anger rising as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and told them that we were making a few stops before going home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house.
Both of them started complaining immediately. I warned them that I was not in the mood to listen. They crossed their arms and became angry. For the next hour, I dragged (拖) the boys from one place to the next. The more I needed them to hurry, the more distracted (分心的) and silly they became. I told them to stop, but they didn’t seem to listen. My patience was wearing thin.
Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets (蟋蟀) for their lizards. “You promised,” they said. And they were right. I had. “Fine, but we need to be fast,” I said, and we ran to the pet shop.
Fifteen minutes later, we were back in the car with one hundred live crickets in a clear plastic bag. I pulled into the driveway with only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it I started giving orders to the boys, but they were concentrated on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the box they prepared.
My anger started to grow, and I shouted at them to hurry up, but they didn’t listen.

With my parents away on a business trip, I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom, invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach, I was attracted. “I had an asthma(哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,” I warned them. “So I’ll probably just lie out on the sand.”
A few hours later, relaxing under a sun umbrella after a picnic lunch, I was glad I’d come. Chickie and Dom went for a swim. They liked to go far out into the sea. I was bathed in the sun until I got too hot, then took a walk down to the shore.
For a few minutes I just let the waves lap around my legs. The ocean was smooth as glass. I could float on my back as if I were in a swimming pool, I thought, and did. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the gentle rocking.
After some time, I opened my eyes and looked around. How did I get so far from shore I hadn’t realized how quickly the sea was carrying me.
I started swimming as quick and hard as I could. Even so I wasn’t getting any closer, and it was becoming harder to breathe. I turned around, looking for help, but I seemed to be completely alone in the water. Far off on the sand I could see people packing up their belongings. It must be nearly five o’clock, I thought. That’s when the lifeguard went off duty.
A wave slapped(拍打) my face and I swallowed salt water. My chest was already burning as I struggled to breathe. In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard’s attention. “I’ll never last till he

could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “It’s ‘finders keepers’, right ” he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost
it.

They made
their way to the parking lot, where others were digging out their cars.
They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed, taking away rocks and trees and anything else in its way as it flowed down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those trapped inside the hotel were buried in the icy ruins.

The Duncan family lived a simple and peaceful life in the Springs Town. Mr. Duncan worked in a bank and Mrs. Duncan was a nurse in their local hospital. Their two children, Bob and Teddy studied in the Springs primary school. It was a loving family. Every family members were always there for each other in times of need and would always find their way to back each other.
But one day, life decided to throw therm a curveball. Mr. Duncan had been laid off from his job. Disheartened as Mr. Duncan was, he kept looking for another job but he got no response. Soon the family found
themselves barely able to make ends meet. Mrs. Duncan picked up extra shifts at the hospital where she worked,
and even the children took on odd jobs to help their family financially.
Despite the challenges they faced, the family remained close. They cooked meals together, went out for walks in the neighborhood, and spent quality time together, always finding ways to lift each other ‘s spirits. Bob and Teddy always told the funny things happened in school to their parents and tried their best to amuse their Daddy.
Months later, Mr. Duncan received a call and he was given a chance to interview for a position at a major
company. Mr. Duncan got the job after the interview but the catch was that he was appointed to another state, far away from their current home.
Mr. Duncan thought about it for a long time, knowing it was a fantastic opportunity to better provide for his family with the new job, but at the same time, he didn’t want to uproot his family from their life and friends, leaving the house filled with memories and their neighbors who had become like family to them. Realizing what they were faced with, Mr. Duncan and Mrs. Duncan made up their minds even if the move was tough. They asked
Bob and Teddy to gather around the kitchen table, discussing the decision at hand.

flooding in his heart and surging through him. However, he knew it was the right decision for his family’s future. Mrs. Duncan knelt down, hugged her children and explained the reasons to them patiently. Eventually, they agreed to take the job and make the move.
Upon reaching their new home, the family struggled to adjust and they felt alone at times. They missed their old house and friends so much that very night the family would gather to talk about what they missed and encourage each other. Despite the difficulties, the family remained a unit, always relying on each other for support. They visited new places, explored new surroundings and found comfort in sharing their experiences with one another. Before long, the family realized they had made new friends and that the new chapter in their lives had opened up amazing opportunities for them to start fresh and get closer.

I had an independent and clever dog named Stickeen. He enjoyed the delicious food that my family prepared for him every day. He often ran out of my sight when walking with me.
Early one morning, I went to explore a nearby glacier (冰川). Stickeen followed me, and together we went upon the glacier.

【答案】He knew very well what I meant. At last, with the courage of despair, he crouched down on the edge,
pressing his body against the ice as if counting one-two-three. Immediately I reached out my arm, he succeeded in
leaping to the safe place with two steps, one on the “bridge”, the other one on my arm. “Well done! Well done!” I cried, trying to catch him. He ran around me screaming and shouting as if saying, “Saved! Saved! Saved!”
When we went back home, Stickeen was a changed dog. Instead of running out of my sight, he always lay by my side, and would hardly accept a piece of food, no matter how tempting the food was from any hand but mine. At night, he would come to me and rest his head on my knee with a look of devotion as if I were his God. And often as he caught my eye, he seemed to say, “Wasn’t that an awful time we had together on the glacier ”

I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.

My name is Maeli. I am so lucky, because I have Lizzy Jo. She is my cousin and my friend! We are close. We talk about everything from our dreams, our sad things to the things we value most such as her beautiful bracelets (手链) and my beads (有孔的珠子).
I looked at my popcorn ball. That moment definitely was NOT the time to use the two second rule. Last week at my grandma’s house I used the two second rule. I accidentally dropped my cookie on her floor. I picked it up REALLY fast, and I admit that I ate that cookie. But this was a very different situation. This involved a puddle. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。

【答案】 Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with ’s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’ . ”Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s testpaper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.

一个完整的故事。

How did I get so far from shore I hadn’t realized
how quickly the sea was carrying me.
“I’ll never last till he
reaches me,” I thought. “They’re all too far away. I can’t get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
