We all know that music has the power to comfort us when we are tired or sad and can help us do more jobs. Can it do the same for animals
In 2001, researchers at the University of Leicester did a study — they played different kinds of music for cows (奶牛) and recorded the amount of milk they produced. They discovered that certain kinds of music could make cows happy and produce 3% more milk than those that only heard the noisy sounds of milking machines.
While that was certainly great news, nobody ever told exactly what kinds of music could make the cows happy and produce more milk. So in 2014, reporters of Modern Farmer, a magazine in New York, US, decided to find out more. They studied the research results of the University of Leicester and also interviewed lots of farmers. They found that like humans, different cows liked different kinds of music. Some liked quiet music while others liked classical music. However, the music like rap (说唱音乐) was not welcome. It seemed to make cows sadder and more worried.
▲ Researchers say that the busy and noisy environment in milking factories (工厂) can be so stressful (压力重的) for cows. As a result, the release of oxytocin (催产素的释放), which is central to the milking process (加工), is slowed. That leads to less milk production. They believe that music helps cows to relax. So, the next time you visit a farm, don't be surprised to see cows dancing to their favourite music. After all, great milk comes from happy cows!
