We use a calendar (日历) to keep ourselves on schedule. It has pages showing the months of the year and the days of the week. We mark important days on it. But at one time, there was no calendar! In ancient times, people used the sun, moon, and stars to know the time.
In 46 BC, Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar. It was a calendar based on (基于) the earth's movement around the sun. A common year in the Julian calendar had 12 months, 365 days. Every four years there was a leap year (闰年), with a day added (增加) to the month of February. At the time, February was the last month of the year, and the added day was 24th February. And the early Julian calendar had 8 days a week. ▲
However, the Julian calendar didn't match exactly the time it takes the earth to move around the sun and there were too many leap years. In 1582, a new calendar, the Gregorian calendar, was invented. A better way to decide the leap year makes the Gregorian calendar far more accurate (精确的) than the Julian calendar. However, it is not perfect pared to the time it takes the earth to move around the sun, it is off by one day about every 3,236 years. The calendar is still widely in use today.
The calendar is a great invention. Today, there are traditional paper calendars, as well as electronic calendars on people's computers or phones. They are used to keep schedules and to remind (提醒) us of important days and things.

Have you ever been shopping and thought you were getting a good deal simply because the price appeared in red Or have you left a shop because the salesperson talked too much If your answers are yes, you're not alone. In fact, your actions are typical (典型的), according to experts (专家).
A new study shows that when men see an advertisement with the prices written in red, they believe the shop is offering better prices than those printed in black. They feel sure about buying the products as well.
However, women don't feel the same way. When it comes to shopping, women think about everything much more carefully than men. Experts explain that if women see an advertisement in red, they question what's happening and think they must be more careful. “Am I being tricked (欺骗) ” they will ask themselves. Women also seem to have a much better memory than men when it comes to the prices in an advertisement. It could be because men aren't that interested.
Another study shows that the key to a successful sale is reading the customer's mood (心情) and matching that mood. The experts explain that if a customer is angry, in a hurry, or in a bad mood, he would like to deal with a salesperson who can understand him, serve him quickly, or just leave him alone.
There are, of course, some other factors (因素) in making a sale. For example, good weather means good news for shop owners. About 60 - 80% of customer decisions are made while people are actually in a shop. And as more people are out during nice weather, there is a higher chance they are shopping.

As one of the world-famous mysteries, crop circles (麦田怪圈) are large patterns (图案) that appear in fields. They are created when certain areas are packed down (被压实) while others are left untouched.
Reports of crop circles may go back hundreds of years. However, in the 1970s, a lot of people said they had found crop circles, mainly in England. The news reporters quickly became interested. As interest in crop circles grew, they started to appear in many other countries, including the US. Some were very large. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the number of crop circles grew. Today, England remains the home of the largest number of crop circles.
Crop circles are certainly real. However, the origin (起源) of crop circles remained a mystery for quite some time. Even today, people still have all kinds of explanations. For example, some people believe that aliens (外星人) made crop circles. They think UFOs left the patterns behind after landing on Earth.
However, the only explanation found to be true is that crop circles were created by human beings. In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, two people from Britain, said that they had made hundreds of crop circles since 1978. They even showed people how they did it. The two said that they made crop circles as a joke. They wanted to make people believe that UFOs or aliens had visited Earth. Still, some people think that there are other examples that can't be explained as a joke.
Could such crop circles point to visits by aliens We'll let you be the judge (鉴定人) of that. They still seem to appear in fields today. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll find a crop circle yourself one day.
1. Reports of crop circles may go back ____________ years.
2. Today, ____________ is the home of the largest number of crop circles.
3. Some people think UFOs left the patterns behind after ____________.
4. Doug and Dave said they had made hundreds of crop circles since ____________.
