By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ “Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
4.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
5.Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
6.What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
7.Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worse page turner”
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

Some researchers from the London School of Economics, Oxford University and University College London carried out a research on the Exploring What Matters course. The course is taught throughout the country and is run by volunteers, who have no formal training but bring people together to explore "the things that really matter in life".
The study found that satisfaction levels of those taking part increased by one point, increasing from 6.4 out of 10 to 7.4 after the course. Researchers said that this increase was greater than the boost people would get from being partnered rather than single (+0.59), and being employed rather than unemployed (+0.7).
So far, more than 6,000 people in the UK have taken part in the eight-week course. People involved in the course learn how to cultivate(培养) happiness by taking positive action in their daily lives. They also learn how to have better relationships and create stronger communities.
"I was quite sceptical," said Jo Newstead, are tired health worker in London. “But I really enjoy it. There are nice people from all different backgrounds and we usually have a full discussion. It has made me focus on what I can do to help improve things for myself and for others."
Mark Williamson, director of Action for Happiness, was not surprised by the study's results. "This new research backs up what hundreds of people have already told us: taking part in these groups is life-changing," he said. "But the thing we're most excited about is that people coming out of this experience not only feel better about themselves, but also feel more connected to others and want to do more for others," he added.
8.What do we know about the course
A.It is run by universities. B. It is managed by volunteers.
C.It is taught all the year round. D. It explores difficult things in life.
9.How is the second paragraph developed
A.By making comparisons. B. By describing processes.
C.By analysing causes. D. By giving examples.
10.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 3
A. How to learn the course well.
B. Benefits of taking the course.
C. What people learn from the course.
D. Problems to be solved during the course.
11.What can we learn about the course according to Mark Williamson
A. It makes people politer and kinder.
B. It makes people happier and more helpful.
C. It makes people smarter and more caring.
D. It makes people more confident and humorous.

Remember switching the radio channels, hoping a tune you liked would pop out You never had to listen too long to know you'd landed on a hit. Maria Chait, an auditory cognitive neuroscientist(听觉认知神经学家), and her team recently studied how quick that reaction is. They started by asking 10 volunteers to name a feel-good, familiar song.
Then the researchers selected a second tune that sounded similar but was unfamiliar to the volunteers. They divided both songs into tiny bits each less than a second long and then randomly inserted them into a six-and-a-half-minute-long track of song bits. As the bits played, the scientists measured the volunteers' brain activity and monitored changes in pupils(瞳孔), too—a sign of excitement. And the researchers found that the listeners' pupils widened more rapidly when they heard familiar versus unfamiliar tunes—within just a tenth to a third of a second! Familiar tunes also caused a two-step pattern of brain activity where the brain first recognized something as familiar and then brought back more detailed information about it. That pattern was absent for unfamiliar songs.
The study did have limitations: it used a small number of songs; it was hard to cover the purpose of the study from the participants; and the control group ended up being mainly international students from Asia—since they had to be unfamiliar with every single song—so their native languages and music backgrounds differed from the experimental group from a European background.
Still, for doctors who want to use music as a helpful tool for patients with memory loss, for example, this study might be a useful, for participants are not required to indicate anything. They just listen passively. Doctors simply have to observe the neural fingerprints of hearing that same old song.
12.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.They asked volunteers to sing along.
B.They separated songs for comparison.
C. They observed the listeners' expressions.
D. They took two steps to draw the conclusion.
13.What does the author think of the study
A. It needs further research. B. It proves to be persuasive.
C. It should use Asian languages. D. It is based on practical theory.
14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The research is helpful in some medical way.
B. Doctors are delighted with the research result.
C. It's easy to cure patients with memory loss.
D. Patients need treating with music like songs.
15.What is the best title for the passage
A. How Can We Use Familiar Songs B.Music Is Good for Our Brains
C. Doctors Practice Music Therapy D.Familiar Tunes Awake Brains Quickly

At sixteen, I possessed something every teenager dreams of—a learner's permit. But unlike most kids of my age, I was terrified at the thought of navigating almost two tons of crushing steel.
"Do you want to drive home " Mom asked when she picked me up. I hesitated, "Really Are you sure " Mom nodded with confidence, "You'll do well." "Okay." I hopped into the driver's seat of our Ford Galaxie 500. "You've got plenty of room to back up," she said when I drove in Mrs. Carlson's driveway. When we reached the county road, I stopped. "Now, look both ways," Mom instructed. "Turn your wheel to the left. Give it some gas, but take it slow. We're not in any hurry."
I pulled onto the narrow two-lane road. We drove along smoothly until a pickup truck came belting up behind us. Mom straightened her back and leaned forward. I glanced in the rearview mirror. I guess it didn't occur to the man driving the blue rust bucket to slow down as he crowded into our bumper. When I failed to speed up, he honked his horn. My fingers held the steering wheel tightly.
Mom pointed, "You'd better turn into the next driveway and let this guy pass." Before I reached the place where I needed to turn, the guy sounded his horn again. In a panic, Mom exclaimed, "Turn, turn here. I said turn!"
I could see that I wasn't close enough to make the turn, but I did as instructed. I suddenly turned the steering wheel to the right and our car fell into the ditch(沟渠) alongside the road. My foot pushed down on the gas pedal, and the engine roared like an angry bull. Our old Galaxie flew to the other side of the ditch and broke through a fence.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
Mom asked me, "Are you okay " I could only see the move of her lips and guess what she was saying. A wave of panic swept through my mind, awakening my memory. It occurred to me that Mom kept instructing me what to do but it failed to work. I tried to tell Mom how frightened and sorry I was. She just hugged me and held my hands firmly, "They say 'Practice makes perfect.' Take it easy, girl!"
Paragraph 2:
"Excuse me," a man's voice interrupted. "Are you ladies okay " We looked up and it was the truck driver who kept honking his horn. "I'm terribly sorry for having driven that way but I had an emergency. And I thought you could make it. Then I found I was wrong so here I am to see if you need any help." With his help, we went to the nearest hospital where Mom told me confidently, "Just remember to keep calm and respond accordingly next time. You'll do fine." Thanks to Mom, that was not my last driving lesson.
