Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum(精神病), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field with Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital. Van Gogh was pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery—and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.

A.Purple. B.Blue. C.Red. D.Yellow.
3.What do the last two paintings have in common

C.They were signed by the artist. D.They were painted on the ground.

Chinese painting, also known as the traditional national painting, one of the traditional paintings with a long history, has its unique and independent system. Using brushes, ink, and Chinese pigments(天然颜料), a painting is drawn on a special kind of paper(Xuan paper) or silk. The traditional subjects are figures, landscapes, flowers and birds.
In comparison with Western painting, Chinese painting has its own artistic characteristics. After a careful study of the object, a painter can discover the rules of its structure, and then produce it by the mind's eye. It is not merely a simple copy, but it combines the object with the artistic concept of the producer, turning a natural image into an "artistic image". The object can show the artist's feelings and personality to achieve the effect of "being alike not only in spirit, but also in appearance". Not all the objects are to be drawn on the paper, and much space is left for the imagination. The use of lines is important in Chinese painting. Clear, swift, sharp and changeable lines are combined with the push, point and press of the brush and ink to show the quality of the object and variations of tone (色调). Ancient Chinese artists listed 18 different ways of drawing lines with the brush in figure painting. Different ways of creating lines are used when painting a landscape, flowers and birds, clouds, and bamboos.
Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy are different branches of art stemming(起源) from the same origin. They use the same kind of tools and all the lines used in painting are variations of the points and lines of calligraphy. Though they are different artistic forms, they are closely linked in terms of their expression of thoughts and feelings. They influence each other to create another artistic feature.
1.Which of the following words can describe the common subjects of traditional Chinese painting
A.Valuable. B.Independent. C.Special. D.Natural.
2.The writer believes that a traditional Chinese painter's picture ________.
A.reflects social problems of his times B.describes mainly a natural image

3.It can be inferred that a traditional Chinese painter spent much time _________.
A.travelling B.learning to draw lines
C.reading D.studying calligraphy before drawing
4.What do painting and calligraphy have in common
A.Using the similar techniques. B.Starting from the same period.
C.Belonging to the same artistic form. D.Covering the same themes.

Vincent Van Gogh was the son of a pastor(牧师) in Holland. Around his early twenties he decided to become an artist. He felt that color was his main influence and he used it to express himself. The way he painted was very unusual during the late 1800s because he paid much attention to colorful abstract art.
Van Gogh had many paintings that have changed the way we look at art. His paintings weren't popular during his lifetime because of an illness that was possibly a mental disorder. However, they are now considered to be the most popular forms of art in the world. In what ways can we appreciate his paintings
Learn about the artistic style of expressionism. In Van Gogh's artwork, the style that he used was expressionism, which was the only one of this kind compared to other paintings.
Look for key symbols that would help you understand his artwork better such as the background of the objects.
Try to understand the artist's aims. You can do this by watching the use of colors, perspectives, and subjects. Knowing the artist's aims, you will be able to understand why he created the work.

A young painter had just completed a beautiful painting. To get people's opinions about his painting skills, he put his painting at a crossing on a busy street and put up a board that read, "Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since I'm new, I might have made some mistakes in my work. Please put a cross wherever you see a mistake."
When he came back in the evening, he was completely shocked to see that the whole painting was filled with crosses. He ran to his master and said to him, "I'm useless and if this is what I have learned to paint, I'm not worth teaching."
The master smiled and said, "I'll let you know that you are a great artist. Now go to paint the same painting again and give it to me."
Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the same painting exactly at the same place. Now the master took out another board which read, "Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. I might have made some mistakes in my painting. I have put a box with colours and brushes just below. If you see a mistake, pick up the brush and correct it." Two days later, they came back to the place. The young painter was surprised to see that actually there was not a single correction.

It all began when my younger brother, Chris, and I went over to Aunt Barbara and Uncle Howard's for Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle live on a farm at the opposite end of town, and Chris and I love going there.
We live on a farm, too and we had to do the morning chores before we left. When we finally got to my aunt and uncle's, we saw Uncle Howard and Dad cleaning out the turkey coop before dinner. We asked Uncle Howard a lot of questions about turkeys. He must have been impressed, because when we were finished, he winked at my dad and handed me one turkey egg.
“You kids put this under a setting hen,” he said, “and in twenty-five days, you'll have one turkey!”
We were so excited that we nearly dropped the egg on the way home. We both stuffed ourselves at dinner and rushed to tend to our egg.
We put this egg under an old hen, and every day Chris and I would check to see if they'd hatched yet. Twenty-five days seemed like forever. Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop after school to find the old hen scratching on the floor. Behind her waddled one ball of fluff, falling over his feet and looking sort of bewildered. We named the little chick Timothy.
Timothy grew and grew, gorging himself on the feed we threw out. He stayed mostly to himself, ignoring the chickens. Mom kept telling us not to get too attached to Timothy, because we were going to have him for Thanksgiving. But we never paid too much attention to what that really meant.
Then, one day toward Thanksgiving, Dad penned Timothy up and said, “We are going to make this nice, plump bird for our Thanksgiving dish." After Dad turned and walked away, Chris's face began to pucker and he started to cry.
“Don't worry, Chris,” I said comfortingly. “We'll save Timothy, somehow.”

答案:
Paragraph 1:
I then had an idea when I thought of the small cave in the woods. It was a cave that Chris and I discovered during one of our little adventures. Well hidden beneath the bushes and leaves, the cave must be the safest place for Timothy's temporary escape. I told Chris about the idea of sneaking Timothy out and hiding him in that secret cave. Chris pondered for a while and nodded. With determined minds, we carried out the plan and I managed to take Timothy away while Chris helped to distract mother.
Paragraph 2:
However, Mom soon found Timothy missing, and Dad sent us out to look for him. "What are we supposed to do now " Chris asked, "Should we just pretend to search for a while and then return home " Yet the fact that Timothy was hidden by us shall be revealed sooner or later.
