On Friday night, Annika was swimming in Howe Sound off Bowyer Island in Canada. As she swam, she ran her hands through the dark water, admiring the beautiful sea. It was only when she was back on shore that she noticed her wedding ring was missing. "She turned the room inside out," said Crockett, Annika's husband, whose grandmother got the ring in 1944, and later passed it down to him.
The next morning, Annika contacted local diving schools, hoping someone would search for the ring. "I just sent a few emails," she said. "But I didn't think they'd be open or answering emails. Fortunately, someone did. And they arrived an hour later.
The search was not easy, though. Crockett said the two divers searched the bottom of the ocean for an hour and a half. "They'd given up hope and they were actually swimming back, but then they spotted a baby octopus(章鱼)," he said. "They followed it for just a few seconds and then it led them to the ring."
"Amazing," said Annika. "Octopuses actually like bright things, from what I've heard." This was confirmed by Chris Harley, who studies animals and their behavior. "Octopuses do like to collect various objects and leave them out in front of their homes," he said.
The ring is now safely back on Annika's finger, and she's promised not to swim with it on again. But there was one other interesting moment in their engagement(订婚) story. In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff's granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden's book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls' decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed(牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy's return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism(坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: "When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter."
8.Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains
A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history.
C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.

A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead.
C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West.
11.What is the text
A. A news report. B. A book review.
C. A children's story. D. A diary entry.

As everyone knows, shaking hands is a sign of peace and kindness. However, people finally realize hands have a lot of germs. How do you avoid a handshake if necessary
First, see if you can get away with a fist bump(碰拳). A handshake spreads four times the bacteria a fist bump does because of the increased contact time and total surface area exposed. But it's a "simple" greeting. If you're meeting your tennis partner, go for it. But do not fist bump your boss.
Prefer to avoid contact completely Patti Wood, author of SNAP: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, offers a suggestion: the peace sign. As Wood notes, Belgian reporter Victor de Laveleye suggested that his countrymen use "V" as a greeting during World War Ⅱ, which stands for the French word "victoire"(victory) and Dutch word "vrjiheid"(freedom). "If you show the peace symbol, it shows your own beliefs to others. At the same time, you want the same in return," says Wood.
Above all, Wood suggests starting the greeting earlier while you're still about seven feet out, giving you the chance to slow it down. In a more formal setting, introduce yourself to others before they get the chance, and offer a wave instead of your hand. If they're still going in for it, there's still hope.
When they reach out their hand, place your hand over your heart and lean forward a bit instead of taking it. Researchers at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Poland found that when people do this, they're regarded as more honest. By doing this, you show friendliness that handshakes always do, while it suggests you'd rather not touch. After that, if someone still sticks to a handshake, you are no longer the one making the situation embarrassing.
12.What is the disadvantage of a fist bump as a greeting
A. It is not fit for formal occasions.
B. It is limited to the sports world.
C.It doesn't look as friendly as a handshake.
D. It spreads no less bacteria than a handshake.
13.What does Patti Wood suggest in order to avoid contact
A. Asking others to make a V-sign at the beginning.
B. Keeping your distance from others all along.
C. Showing greetings one step ahead of others.
D. Simply ignoring others' hands reaching out.
14.What do we know about the greeting mentioned in the last paragraph
A. It shows that one is really sincere. B. It is highly likely to cause trouble.
C. It makes the others embarrassed. D.It is often sent by researchers.
15.What is the best title for the text
A. How to Treat Others with Kindness
B. Major Types of Greetings in Daily Life
C. How to Make Handshakes Much Safer
D. Polite Ways to Get Out of Shaking Hands

Playing sports is a lot of fun. Getting hurt is not. ①______
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets(头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you're playing football, baseball, softball, skateboarding, and so on.
Warm up.
②______ Doing some stretches(伸展) can get you prepared to hit the field. By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up and practicing a sport help keep you safe, too.
Know the rules of the games.
Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the many cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them—at least most of the time. ③______ When players know the rules of the game, fewer injuries happen. For example, you know that in soccer you can't come from behind, crash into a player's legs, and steal the ball. It's legal and safer to go after the ball rather than the player.
④______.
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may want to get back in the games, even after an injury. But playing when you're hurt is a bad idea. ⑤______
Now you know how to prevent sports injuries. If you follow these rules, you can stay safer while you are playing sports.
A.Don't play when you're injured.
B.Don't do too much exercise.
C.It's the same way with sports.
D.It can lead to an even worse injury.
E.It's not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
My father is a hardworking and friendly man. He taught me to drive, play baseball and fish when I was young. However, one other thing my dad's good at was holding a grudge(怨恨). For most of my teen years, he didn't speak to his younger brother, although they were at many family events together.
I was never sure why my dad was so angry with my uncle in the first place. They spent many festivals seated at opposite ends of the table. It was simply something that we all accepted at the time.
When I was nineteen, I got a call in my college dorm that my dad was having serious medical problems. My mom picked me up in the middle of the night so we could be there in time. However, my dad was arranged to move to a better hospital the next day. I didn't get a wink of sleep. I tossed and turned.
That morning, as my mom and I walked down the hallway of the hospital, we could see straight into my dad's room. A tall man wearing a stylish suit stood over my father's bed with his back to us. Casually, my mom remarked how nice it was for the doctor to come by to see my dad so early in the morning.
But through my misty eyes, something about the scene struck me as strange. The man with his back to us was standing very quietly. He was holding both of my dad's hands. It was definitely not a typical doctor’s behavior. I stopped at the door of the room.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
I whispered softly to my mom, "That's not a doctor."

答案:
Paragraph 1:
I whispered softly to my mom, "That's not a doctor." My mother stepped forward, only to find that he was the last person we could imagine to have appeared. It was my uncle who had been caring for my father. I was about to open the door when my mother stopped me, leaving the two brothers alone longer. It must have worked some kind of magic, and my father soon recovered. All the doctors said it was nothing but a miracle.
Paragraph 2:
The other miracle was my father's new relationship with his younger brother. They might still sit at the opposite sides, but the awkward silence was replaced by various jokes and stories. Later, they frequently went fishing and hiking together. I thought that what my uncle did during my father's illness warmed my father's heart and got the response it deserved. Now I realize that if you want to be forgiven by others, you should show your kindness first. No one will refuse the good will offered by others, especially when in trouble.
