Instead, one activist, dressed in a full-body monkey suit, had arrived with a sign praising the filmmakers: "Thanks for not using real apes(猿)!"
The creative team behind "Apes" used motion-capture(动作捕捉) technology to create digitalized animals, spending tens of millions of dollars on technology that records an actor's performance and later processes it with computer graphics to create a final image(图像). Yet "Apes" is more exception than the rule. In fact, Hollywood has been hot on live animals lately. One nonprofit organization, which monitors the treatment of animals in filmed entertainment, is keeping tabs on more than 2,000 productions this year. Already, a number of films, including "Water for Elephants," "The Hangover Part Ⅱ" and "Zookeeper," have drawn the anger of activists who say the creatures acting in them haven't been treated properly.
In some cases, it's not so much the treatment of the animals on set in the studio that has activists worried; it's the off-set training and living conditions that are raising concerns. The Oscar-nominated movie Soul deals with passion(激情), purposes and the meaning of life―topics that aren't usually seen in animated films.
The movie centers on Joe, a middle school band teacher who feels unsatisfied because his dream is to be a full-time jazz musician. On the day he gets the biggest opportunity of his career, Joe nearly dies—but then his soul gets the chance to return to his body if he can find out the purpose of his life.
Pete Docter, who co-wrote and co-directed the film with Kemp Powers, says the film was inspired by the emotional disorder(紊乱) he experienced after writing and directing Inside Out. "Having so much success in Inside Out, I found myself wondering: Why didn't it bring me a sense of satisfaction Why didn't it fix everything in my life " Pete Docter says.
Soul has created success of its own. The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture—Animated, and was nominated for three Academy Awards. But Kemp Powers, who also received an Oscar nomination for his film One Night in Miami, says Soul is actually meant to challenge traditional ideas of success and failure. "We were trying to help not just Joe, but the whole audience, understand that it's not about winners or losers and that everyone's life has value," Powers says. "That was really a powerful driving force from the very beginning."
Docter says the film's message is that life has meaning that goes beyond personal ambition. "The movie's aim is really to say that we're already enough," he says. "We all can walk out of the door and enjoy life without needing to achieve or prove anything. And that's really free."
8.In what way is Soul different from many other animated films

Lin-Manuel Miranda began writing what would become In the Heights as a university student. The musical play made him a playwright and performer. Now, more than 10 years later, it has been made into a movie.
Miranda said like other artists, he was driven not only by his dream but also by something else. "It was a lot of fear, honestly," Miranda said in an interview. "I was in my late teens and started to study theater. The fear was that I was going into a domain that had no space for me, and that had no roles for me. It was sort of that thing: No one was going to write your dream show."
In the Heights opened in June 2021. It celebrates many things: the Latino immigrant experience, neighborhood communities in New York City and life itself.
The movie was supposed to be shown in June 2020, but was put off by COVID-19. The film's director, however, thought the delay(推迟) was not necessarily a bad thing. Moviegoers might be ready for some energetic music, singing and dancing after a year of restricted(受限制的) life.
Many performers acting in the first In the Heights Broadway show appear in the movie's final song and dance. Students from a nearby high school can also be seen in the film. The students produced their own In the Heights show, and the filmmakers watched it and found it moving.
Others starring in the movie include Leslie Grace as Nina Rosario (a college student at home for the summer), Corey Hawkins as Benny (a taxi driver), and Melissa Barrera as Vanessa (a beauty salon worker trying to get her own home). Barrera said the part she played as a young woman searching for a better future away from home was basically herself.
12.What can we infer about Miranda from the first paragraph
A. He was poor at performances.
B. He had no role to act in university.
C. He directed a movie during university.
D. He acted in a play he had written himself.
13.What does the underlined word "domain" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Field. B. Game. C. Dream. D.Chance.
14.What did the film's director think of the delay of the film
A. Unnecessary. B. Helpful. C. Unacceptable. D. Exciting.
15.What can be learned about Barrera
A. She spent her summer holiday at home.
B. She acted as a taxi driver in the movie.
C. She and her role have similar experiences.
D. She appears in the movie's final song and dance.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
