Time: 7:00 A.M. Emily Stupi dives into(跳进) the pool. Cold water hits her, and it's hard to catch her breath. Pulling her arms through the water, Emily begins her first of eight laps(圈). She wants to complete the triathlon(铁人三项).
Emily shakes with cold as she gets out of the pool. Along with three hundred other children and adults, she heads into the one-mile run, followed by a four-and-a-half-mile bike ride.
The triathlon is being held in Glendale, Arizona, and the temperature is freezing on the late-October morning. But seeing her father's warm smile makes Emily forget about the cold.
Emily feels lucky to have her father here today. Three years ago, doctors discovered that he had skin cancer. His treatments made him feel tired and sick, but he believed he was going to get better. Emily says, "Courage is something that all people have inside, and they use it to make the world a brave and happy place. My dad showed great courage when he got cancer."
Emily asked a lot of questions about her father's illness. Her mom says, "We had a family discussion and gave her all the facts. We talked about what cancer is and how money is raised for aid(援助) and research."

She then sent out 150 letters asking for donations(捐赠).Her dad matched the money, and Emily gave $7,000 to the American Cancer Society.

A new study shows that fat people in the United States suffer direct economic and social effects because of their size. The findings are from an 8-year study of about 100,000 people. The people who were studied were between the age of 18 and 24 when the research began.

The researchers say that more than 1,000,000Americans are that big. The researchers found that fat young women were from wealthy families. The fat women also were 20% less likely to get married and they earned an average of about $6,700 a year less than other women. The study showed less severe effects on fat men. Years ago, I could not stick to exercising until I bought a CD called I Enjoy Exercise. I listened to it every day. I bought the CD because I wanted to run in a race and hopefully win!
I had promised my 10-year-old son Todd that I would run in a race with him. Unfortunately, however, when that race came about, his left leg was hurt in a car accident. Without him running with me, although I took part in that race, yet I didn’t do quite well in it.
While Todd couldn’t run together with me because of his injury, he never forgot the promise I made for him. He was always asking me whether I would keep my promise when he recovered in the future. So I decided I was going to train and go all out to win the next race. What I needed was motivation (动力). It happened that one of my friends mentioned the CD which he liked very much, saying that he got a lot from the music in it when feeling down. So I bought it and listened to it while exercising every day.
It was amazing what happened to my thinking as I listened to it daily. I started to think about the repeated words on the CD—“I enjoy exercise”. Instead of dreading exercise, I was thinking, “I enjoy exercise.”
I found out how important words are that we play in our minds every day. I went from a person who seldom exercised to someone who started to exercise daily. Just think how our lives will improve if we reflect on the uplifting and motivating words of the famous works. I have found the positive messages have greatly improved my thinking and then changed my life.
How did I do in that race, you might be thinking I actually won the gold medal in my age group.
8.Why did the author take part in the race by herself
A. She would like to win the race. B. She had a good talent for running.
C. Her son got injured in a car accident. D. Her son was unwilling to run with her.
9.How did the author get the motivation for training
A. By recalling some inspiring stories.
B. By listening to the CD while running.
C. By getting timely help from his friend.
D. By forcing herself into keeping running.
10.What does the underlined word “dreading” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Fearing. B. Improving. C. Preferring. D. Taking.
11.What message does the author intend to deliver to us
A. It’s important to avoid injury while running.
B. The motivating words make a difference to us.
C. Parents should get along well with children.
D. We can build up our bodies by regular exercise.
D
From McDonald's to Sonic, fast food had a bad effect on my waistline and my budget(预算). It was so easy to use my card for a small purchase(购买). For me, I got a lot of satisfaction from fast food.
One day I realized that I was spending $40 a week on fast food. This was a lot of iced coffee and hamburgers! I decided to give myself a tight budget to reduce my consumption. Every Monday I placed an envelope with $20 in my purse. That was my fast food budget for the whole week. If there was anything left over at the end of the week, it would be mine to save or spend. If I spent all of the money during the week, there would be no more fast food that week.
The budget made me more mindful of my purchases. Instead of purchasing a large drink from Sonic, I would purchase a small one. It was still satisfying but not nearly as expensive. Instead of eating a whole meal, I would pick the part that I actually wanted. I never really felt unhappy because it was a wise choice to spend or save with each purchase.
The envelope budget kept me honest. I had a clear idea how much money was spent each week on fast food purchases. I started to bring my lunches more often to save more money for the week. It was a fun challenge to see how much I could save every week.
Changing the way I spent money on fast food not only helped my budget, but watched my weight. Now I am more likely to bring my lunch than to buy it. I am not upset, but allowed to make positive choices to improve my life.
12.What can we know about the author from Paragraph 1
A. She was fond of fast food very much.
B. She had no time to cook for herself.
C. She lived with a small amount of money.
D. She got some benefits from using her card.
13.Why did the author set her envelope budget
A. To buy fast food at a bargain price.
B. To save money to buy more fast food.
C. To get out of the habit of eating fast food.
D. To make fast food spending under control.
14.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. It is hard to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
B. It is unusual to make some changes.
C. The envelope budget is good for health.
D. The budget means the pressure from life.
15.What is the passage mainly about
A. Why the author became addicted to fast food.
B. How fast food controlled the author's behavior.
C. How the envelope budget changed the author's life.
D. Why the author took the envelope budget seriously.
