People in the United States honour their parents with two special days: Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care to their children. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with childcare.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations(康乃馨). A red one symbolizes(象征) a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honour their parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(公墓). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues(烤肉) for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists(花匠),candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

After spending 13 years raising three boys, Stephanie Connolly wanted to get back into the workforce, but she was worried that her computer skills were obsolete. Not only was the long employment break a concern, but she had never used Microsoft Office programs. Her last employer had only used WordPerfect.
A year later, Connolly is so skilled in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that she is helping others, and has just completed a fixed amount of work as a teaching assistant in a computer class. She's also on the job hunt, armed with a new resume(简历), interview skills, and the latest knowledge of how to conduct Internet job searches, fill out Web-based applications, and upload resumes.
"I can walk through the doors of the company and feel very confident. The course instructors have given that to me," said Connolly, who owed her development to classes offered by the Harvard Allston Workforce Development Collaboration(HAWDC). The collaboration is part of a series of programs, and neighborhood improvements that began with an agreement reached between Harvard University and the city of Boston five years ago.
The agreement grew out of discussions between the University and the city over the construction of Harvard's science Complex in Allston. Although the construction paused in 2009, the implementation(实施) of the non-construction-related aspects of the agreement has continued.
What has meant to the neighbors is the opening of the Harvard Allston Education Portal, a community-centered education facility that serves as Harvard's front door to the neighborhood and access to certain university programs and facilities. Information about the agreement's benefits to the community, as well as about Harvard's deep ties with Cambridge and Boston, is available on the new community-oriented Public Affairs website.

Since his students began using Quizlet, English teacher Tristan Thorne has noticed an improvement in their ability to learn and use new words. Quizlet is a learning app, a computer program you use on your mobile phone. It can help users build and test their knowledge of English words. Quizlet has word sets for millions of subjects. And, it is quickly becoming a useful mobile tool for language learners.
Thorne teaches at Columbia University in New York City. Thanks to learning apps, Jeff Strack, another English teacher, has also noticed improvement in his students' ability to remember information. He teaches at Hostos Community College, also in New York. He and Thorne are part of a growing number of language educators adding mobile apps to their classes.
Strack and Thorne seem to agree that the days when teachers would not permit the use of mobile phones are gone. When they use apps, language learners communicate more differently than in a traditional classroom. Users act on or respond to something, instead of just listening to new information.
Thorne believes that apps can help learners become more active in learning. For example, each week, his students are required to add vocabulary words into Quizlet for others to use. He says some apps also make it easy for students to know their language strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest improvement Strack has seen in much more active in his students is that they are whole-class or small-group discussions. "Apps let all students take part in the activity, whether it's a game, quiz or practice activity," he says.
Many existing learning apps are designed for students of all ages and levels. Some are designed for group activities. Some support independent learning. Still some are good for homework. Thorne says he especially likes Quizlet and three other apps: QR Codes, Socrative and Evernote.
8.What do Strack and Thorne do to improve their teaching
A. They design learning apps for their students.
B. They allow their students to use mobile apps to study.
C. They don't allow their students to use apps after class.

Christmas is still a few weeks away. But in Holland, Germany and other parts of central Europe, man dressed in red with a big white beard will already be flying from house to house with a big sack and presents for children. "Sinterklaas komt!" as Dutch children say—Saint Nicholas is coming!
It's obvious from the name that "Santa Claus" comes from "Sinterklaas". Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6, but there are many things about the saint and his festival that are similar to Christmas. Just as Santa has reindeer, so Sinterklaas has a white horse. Dutch and German children put their shoes out in front of the chimney just like children hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve, hoping that in the morning they will be full of presents. With Sinterklaas, however, you're also expected to put a carrot in your shoe as a present to his horse.
Like Santa, Sinterklaas also judges whether children have been "naughty or nice" in the past year to help him decide whether they deserve presents. But while good children get sweets, the consequences of being bad are far worse than they are with Father Christmas. Naughty children are given a stick so their parents can beat them. If you are really, really bad, Sinterklaas will put you into a sack and take you away.
In parts of Germany and Austria, people also celebrate December 5, but it is a celebration of naughtiness rather than niceness. On "Krampus Day", bizarre, horned demons (or rather boys dressed in costumes) run around causing havoc and hitting girls with sticks. Authorities have struggled for years to ban the tradition, but have not been successful. Luckily Saint Nicholas always comes next day to put things right.
12.What is the main focus of the article
A.The history of Christmas Day.
B.The traditions of Saint Nicholas Day.
C.The differences between Christmas Day and Saint Nicholas Day.
D.The connection between Saint Nicholas Day and Krampus Day.
13.Which of the following statements about Saint Nicholas is TRUE
A.The festival falls on December 5 in most European countries.
B.On the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, people usually eat carrots.
C.In Germany, children expect to get gifts in their shoes on Saint Nicholas Day.
D.Like Santa, Sinterklaas is believed to ride his reindeer from house to house to give gifts to children.
14.What can we conclude from Paragraph 3
A.Naughty children don't get anything from Sinterklaas.
B.As well as children, Sinterklaas also brings gifts for adults.
C.Sinterklaas is more generous than Father Christmas.
D.Sinterklaas treats good children better than naughty children.
15.What is the attitude of authorities towards Krampus Day traditions, according to the article
A.They don't like some of the traditions and want to stop them.
B.They organize various activities to entertain people.
C.They respect the way people celebrate the traditions.
D.They regard it as an important tradition and try to make it popular.

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, a beautiful hat, a cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything take away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪).For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
On Monday morning, hiding behind the window, we soon saw what we were waiting for. It turned out that there were three of them from our school. They sneaked up on our snowman and sneered. Taking their places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliver powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard iceblock of the base, sneers turned into shock, then agony and tears. They howled and cursed, gritting their teeth and stomping their feet.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing their pained look, we couldn't help laughing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding their damaged feet. We just couldn't contain our happiness and excitement. With a hearty laugh, we came out of hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house. "An eye for an eye! Justice done!" We yelled behind them. And that was the end of our problems with the snowman bullies. Ever since then, our snowman was kept guarded and intact until it happily melted into spring water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood memories.
