Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942, in Lima, Peru. Her parents were both from Chile, where their families had held a great deal of political influence. Not only was Isabel's uncle once the president of Chile, but her father and her stepfather were both important diplomats. Despite her connection to political power, Isabel's childhood was not easy. At the age of three, Isabel's biological father abandoned her family, which forced them to live with her grandparents in Chile. During this time, she was exposed to her grandmother's love for astrology(占星术) and storytelling, which influenced her writing in the future.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Isabel Allende worked as a journalist, writing for both magazines and television. After her uncle, President Salvador Allende, lost power and was murdered in 1973, Isabel and her family left Chile because they felt it was too dangerous to remain under the rule of Augusto Pinochet, the new, cruel leader of Chile. For thirteen years, Isabel and her family lived in Venezuela, where she began to write fiction. She used personal experiences to inspire her writing throughout her career. In fact, many of her novels are based on personal life events. In 1982, Isabel Allende published her first novel called The House of the Spirits. This bestselling novel was inspired by a letter Isabel wrote in 1981 to her ill grandfather. The novel turned out to be a story about two Chilean families whose lives are changed because of a military coup. One of her later novels, Paula(1994), is about her daughter, who passed away from a rare disease at a young age.
Isabel Allende has won |many awards for her bold and creative writing. Not only has she won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 2010, but she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.

Many of us love July because it's the month when nature's berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels from British Columbia's fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.
Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein(蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants(抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries(樱桃) they are so delicious who cares However, they are rich in vitamin C.
When combined with berries or slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat "ice cream". For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer.
If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a "soft-serve" creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children's party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.
1.What does the author seem to like about cherries
A.They contain protein. B.They are high in vitamin A.
C.They have a pleasant taste. D.They are rich in antioxidants.
2.Why is fresh lemon juice used in freezing bananas
A.To make them smell better. B.To keep their colour.
C.To speed up their ripening. D.To improve their nutrition.
3.What is "a juicer" in the last paragraph
A.A dessert. B.A drink. C.A container. D.A machine.
4.From which is the text probably taken
A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine.
C.A research paper. D.A travel brochure.
C
Returning to a book you've read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There's a welcome familiarity—but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don't change, people do. And that's what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It's true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it's all about the present. It's about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating(令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard's Holy the Firm, her poetic1975 ramble(随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortázar's Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortázar.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author's work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it's you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
1.Why does the author like rereading
A.It evaluates the writer-reader relationship.
B.It's a window to a whole new world.
C.It's a substitute for drinking with a friend.
D.It extends the understanding of oneself.
2.What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast
A.It's a brief account of a trip. B.It's about Hemingway's life as a young man.
C.It's a record of a historic event. D.It's about Hemingway's friends in Paris.
3.What does the underlined word "currency" in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Debt. B.Reward. C.Allowance. D.Face value.
4.What can we infer about the author from the text
A.He loves poetry. B.He's an editor.
C.He's very ambitious. D.He teaches reading.
D

Dad and Mom had got to go on a four-day business trip. They taught their elder son Daniel and younger daughter Jane how to feed and look after their dog Spot how to take good care of themselves—learning to cook if they could, or ordering pizza with money left on the table if they were busy, and told them to keep their rooms clean and tidy. They asked Daniel to be in charge.
On the very morning when the parents left, Mom kissed them and said to Daniel gently, “Young man, do take care of Spot and Jane.” Daniel promised, “I will, Mom.”
Too excited to fall asleep again, Daniel and Jane jumped out of bed, calling out each other to get up. Their pet dog, Spot, heard the similar voice and rushed in, with a ball in its mouth. Jane stuck(伸)her head into Daniel’s room,“ Spot got up an hour earlier. Let’s walk it.” Daniel said excitedly, “I’m coming, but, Jane, don’t forget to keep your room clean and tidy.” “I will. ”
They ran with the dog in the yard and threw the ball away for Spot to bring it back. They had fun playing with Spot the whole morning. Washing Spot was slow and tiring as it was the first time they had done it. Then Daniel settled down to his homework while Jane did her reading with interest.
The following day, Jane begged her brother to order pizza for lunch. Daniel agreed excitedly, “We haven’t tasted that for long and we behave ourselves, right ” After a while, he added, “We should save money, too.” Within half an hour, they treated themselves to a big pizza. However, in the afternoon, Spot looked sick, lying lazily and unwilling to move. Daniel was concerned about the dog and took it to the pet clinic(诊所) immediately with Jane as their parents had done.

第三节
答案:
Dear Steve,
I'm so pleased to learn that you and your classmates are learning Chinese. I'd like to recommend the following two dictionaries.
The English-Chinese/Chinese-English Dictionary(ECCED) is really a good one for beginners. It has about 18,000 English words and 20,000 Chinese words. Besides plenty of examples, it has many notes telling you how to use a word. Xinhua Dictionary (XD) is the most popular Chinese dictionary, and it has a vocabulary of over 10,000 words. It may also be useful to some advanced learners of Chinese. Of the two, ECCED is more expensive, costing 52 yuan, and XD costs 19.9 yuan.
Please let me know if you want me to buy these dictionaries for you.
Yours,
Li Hua

When Dad and Mom arrived a day earlier, they were amazed to find everything in a mess. Mom was angry and shouted, “Listen to me, young man, I left you in charge. We thought you would act like an adult, but look at the mess. The money for food has been used up but why does Spot still look hungry What did you do with the money we left ” Jane explained anxiously, “Mummy, Spot is sick, so we spent the rest of the money taking it to the pet clinic.”
Paragraph 2:
Daniel ran into his room, with tears in his eyes, “Jane, there is no need to explain and Mom won’t trust me any longer.” Comforting Mom, Dad said calmly, “There is probably a good explanation for everything.” Hearing the little daughter’s words, Mom understood that the reason why they had no time to clean the house was that they waited for Spot at the clinic all day. Mom regretted acting so angrily and was satisfied that Daniel learnt to be responsible for others. She apologized to Daniel sincerely and hugged him in her arms, saying that “you are really growing up into a young man.”
