Photos of a gentleman reading calmly in bed in the newly-built makeshift hospital in Wuhan, epicenter (中心) of the coronavirus outbreak, went viral on China’s social media platforms, with many calling him the “Invincible Wuhan Man”.
The man, dubbed “The Reader in Fang Cang” (mobile cabin hospital) has even garnered (获得) attention from the author of the book featured in the photo, The Origins of Political Order by Francis Fukuyama, on Twitter. Surnamed Fu, the 39-year old “invincible” reader is currently a teaching postdoc at Florida State University after obtaining his doctorate degree in Wuhan University. His hometown is in Xiaogan, a city neighbouring Wuhan, but his parents currently live in Wuhan. Fu was infected with novel coronavirus when he visited his parents, and he was among the first group of patients transferred to the cabin hospital at Wuhan International Conference and Exhibition Center on Feb. 5, according to Hubei Daily. He bought the book in Wuhan, and he likes reading, Fu told Hubei Daily. He was just reading the book out of interest and never anticipated that the photo would go viral.
As Fu gains more popularity, Fukuyama’s book has also become a hit. The Origins of Political Order quickly topped the recommended book list on China’s review site Douban on Feb 7. Netizens were charmed by Fu’s positive and calm attitude. “This picture of him reading in bed gives me strength and hope, I wonder if he is still available,” said one Weibo user.
“When you feel depressed, reading is one of the solutions to heal your inner pains. Sometimes doing exercises helps too,” said another netizen.

The race skywards began in America. In the late1800s, industrialization had driven urban populations and land prices up, making tall buildings increasingly cost-effective, according to Carol Willis, director of the Skyscraper Museum in New York, “The very first tall buildings were office buildings that concentrated a work force, piled one on top of the other in order to make business very efficient, ”she says.
Like all major changes in architecture, the trend was underpinned by engineering. The development of steel framework, which could be used instead of load-bearing stones, made it easier and cheaper to build tall. The coming of the elevator, meanwhile, made living on higher floors far more convenient.
Though similar in shape, today's skyscrapers (摩天大楼) look little like those built in the first half of the 20th century. This is mostly thanks to architecture's next major technological shift:the curtain wall.
Postwar developments in manufacturing meant that huge panes of glass could be produced quickly and uniformly, and glass windows soon became the front of choice for high-rises. As well as allowing for greater floor space and more natural light, glass exteriors (外部) help. buildings resist greater wind loads.
There are now 191 completed skyscrapers that are at least 300 meters tall. But that doesn't mean our cities will grow taller indefinitely. While each additional story adds sellable floor space, construction costs also rise. All buildings reach a point where adding an extra floor will cost more money than it brings.
“Every city wants to have this landmark that gives that sense of distinct culture, ”but it also needs places for people to live and work in urban settings“without the city sprawling (无序扩张), ”explains Hong Kong architect Simon Chan.
The next big challenge facing architects goes beyond height:At a time when buildings and their construction account for more than a third of the world's energy consumption and contribute about 40% of greenhouse gas emissions(排放), there are new costs to consider.
Whether it's employing more energy-efficient materials, encouraging natural air or using buildings themselves to generate solar or wind energy, reducing carbon emissions is the new frontier for many skyscraper architects.
8. What does the underlined word“underpinned” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Created. B. Prepared. C. Suggested. D. Supported.
9. What made living on higher floors much more convenient
A. The development of steel framework. B. Load-bearing stones.
C. The use of the elevator. D. The curtain wall.
10. What can we know from paragraph 5
A. Our cities will grow taller definitely.
B. All skyscrapers are at least 300 meters tall.
C. Construction cost rises as the stories increase.
D. The profit for builders will be greater as the building becomes higher.
11. What's the next big challenge facing architects
A. How to build the greenest building. B. How to build the strongest building.
C. How to build the tallest building in the world. D. How to build the most comfortable building.
D
During a hurricane strong winds hit the land. Winds reach speeds of 250 kilometers per hour or more. Some animals including lizards (蜥蜴), may get blown away. But with a good grip (紧抓), others can live through the storm. A new study suggests that such hurricanes can actually help lizards to some degree.
Colin Donihue, a scientist examined lizard species on several Caribbean islands. The process began in 2017, as Donihue was studying lizard populations in Turks and Caicos. A couple of weeks after he and other researchers left there, those islands were hit by hurricanes, first Hurricane Irma and then Hurricane Maria. Returning to the island a year later, he noticed that the populations looked different. The lizards he saw after the hurricanes had larger toe pads than those he’d examined the previous year before the hurricanes. He has looked at 12 island populations of the lizard species Anolis sagrei, and separately analyzed 188 Anolis species with populations that range from Florida to Brazil. He and his team cross-examined the size of their toe pads with the frequency and severity (强度) of Caribbean hurricanes. Over the past 70 years of hurricane data, the result stood out: larger toe pads had a close connection with more serious hurricanes.
The study better explained how evolutionary (进化的) processes are helping species become stronger, even as global climate change threatens their long-term survival. In the past hurricanes simply haven’t been common enough to matter in an evolutionary timeline. But due to climate change, there will be more hurricanes. Some populations can be completely destroyed by hurricanes. But in the case of the lizards Donihue studied, the ones that survived these violent storms were the ones with larger toe pads. And their babies also had similarly large toe pads. That small change in their body tells us how species change as the environment around them changes as well.
12. What did Colin Donihue’s study find
A. Hurricanes had an influence on lizards’ evolution.
B. Many kinds of lizards existed on the Caribbean islands.
C. Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused lizards5 extinction.
D. The lizards on the islands were stronger than others.
13. According to Paragraph 3 lizards with larger toe pads may ________.
A. have a small population B. do well in finding food
C. tend to fight intensely with each other D. be spotted where hurricanes hit hard
14 What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Humans must contribute to lizards9 development.
B. Some species become stronger due to climate change.
C. Lizards will be removed from the earth sooner or later.
D. Climate change often brings disadvantages to lizards.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Perfect Place for Lizards to Live B. More Hurricanes Hit the Caribbean Islands
C. Hurricanes Help Lizards Grow Stronger D. Tough Life for Lizards on the Caribbean Islands

After retiring from a long career teaching English at Huntington East High School, my brother, Bob, planned to travel the world. Instead, I was visiting him in the hospital where he had undergone a heart operation. He had a long road to recovery ahead.
Bob didn’t have much experience with being a patient. Certainly not as much as I did. He had always been healthy and kept in good shape, working part-time as a volunteer since retirement. I had grown up with chronic (慢性的) illness, had dozens of surgeries. Even now I was facing a puzzling condition my doctors hadn’t yet identified. A condition that gave me symptoms similar to the ones Bob’s heart illness gave him. I didn’t want to burden him with my own fears right now. I touched his arm, wondering if I would soon face the same questions. “I sure wasn’t expecting anything like this,” Bob said. “A failing heart. I can’t believe it.”
“I know it’s a shock. But we’re all here for you. You’re so blessed and loved. Your wonderful wife. Kids. Grandkids. More friends than you can count. I never go anywhere that someone isn’t saying something wonderful about your teaching days.”
“Thanks. You always say the sweetest things.” But I heard an “If you say so” in his voice. I tried to reassure Bob about how valuable his life was, but I was trying to convince myself about my own life as well. I’d spent so much of my time trying to help others, both before my retirement as a nurse and now as a storyteller. But the world was full of those. Would anything I’d done really last after I was gone
One day, a housekeeper entered the room with her mop and nodded to Bob in his bed. “Hey, Coach!” she said. “Huh ” Bob said. I could tell he didn’t know who she was. The housekeeper smiled. “I knew it was you. My daughter played on your soccer team. I still remember her reciting all those lines of poetry. She loves poems to this day. What a great effect you have had on her! I should thank you very much.” I was very surprised when hearing these.

I shouted excitedly, “You once coached soccer How great you are!”

C The use of the elevator.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. A

During a hurricane, strong winds hit the land.
14. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Both Bob and I got good news from doctors.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I shouted excitedly, “You once coached soccer How great you are!” I think of him strictly as an English teacher. “I tried to combine the two pursuits,” Bob said. “I believed in the value of sports but knew few of my students would pursue sports as a career. I wanted to give them something more. Those kids could come up with some great lines. Sometimes a lot better than what I taught them.” He’d had no idea what an impression he’d made on so many. Hid made the world a better place. His on-and-off-the-field poetry lessons had taken on a life of their own.
Both Bob and I got good news from doctors. With the care of the medical staff, Bob was feeling positive about his recovery, he got a quicker recovery than doctors had expected. After staying one month in hospital, he had recovered fully and went home. My medical condition was finally identified. A stomach bleed led to my illness. I also fully recovered, thankfully with no heart damage. My attitude fully recovered as well. I didn’t need to be a famous poet to make a mark on the world.
