牛津译林版 英语八年级上册 Unit 4 Do it yourself 阅读理解专练
Do you remember where you were when you heard about a traffic accident of a close friend The answer is probably yes. Do you remember what you were doing on your birthday that year You may have to think a little harder.
People remembered bad memories more easily and in greater detail than good ones. Why is that A new study found that people do this because of evolutionary reasons.
Elizabeth Kensinger and her partners at Boston College, US, did a study looking at this. They found negative feelings like fear and sadness cause an increase in brain activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain that controls memories. So memories caused by negative feeling are kept in greater detail than other kinds of memories.
For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.
According to Kensinger, it is easy to understand this from an evolutionary point of view. She said that people pay attention to dangerous information so they can use that information to guide their actions and save their lives. They can also use it to plan for similar events in the future.
The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember, bad memories. This line of research could help solve stress disorders.

How much do you know about depression Recently, the Ministry of Education said China would include screening(筛查)for depression in students’ health examination. Students will take tests to see whether they are experiencing depression. This is to improve students’ mental(心理的)health.
It’ s normal for people to feel down or sad sometimes. Most of the time, these bad feelings go after a little while. Depression is not the same. According to the World Health Organization, with depression, people experience bad feelings for most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. And it might last months or even years. More seriously, people exercising depression may hurt or even kill themselves.
Depression also influences the way people act or how well they do in school or at work. It can affect(影响)their energy, sleep and eating, too. If people are depressed, they find it hard to enjoy things like before. Most of all, it influences what people think about themselves. People going through depression often feel alone. Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly while you are working, or when your best friend does not wait for you after school
If you do, you need to take control of (控制) your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry with people can make you lose friends.
Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, has written My Feelings Are Just Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teens how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can never make them better. Getting angry is not a natured (本性的) way to act. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily—all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.
When a baby falls over, it only cries if people are watching it. Like a baby, you should only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
The book gives many tips to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three:
①Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.
②Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.

My students often have this problem in English. They try to communicate an idea. They know what they want to say, but they can’t find the right word to describe their thoughts. Often the conversation stops at that moment. Has this ever happened to you What can you do when you can’t find the right word At that moment, instead of searching for the perfect word, you have to try using many easy words to explain your meaning. This is called “paraphrasing” and is used by people all around the world, in every language, every day, to communicate well.
When you forget a word or when someone can’t understand what you want to say, try paraphrasing. One way to paraphrase is just to use easier words. For example, instead of saying “improve”, try saying “made better”. “This product has been made better. Now it is more useful.” This simple sentence can communicate much more effectively (有效地). Maybe the person you are speaking to might say the word you were trying to say (“Yes, this product has really been improved, hasn’t it ”) so that you can learn the new word without any special effort.
Besides using easier words, you can try using the opposite word. When speaking about something, try to say what it is not. That can give the listener a valuable clue to your meaning. Sometimes, you might make a mistake in pronouncing a word. In that case, don’t give up! Sometimes you have to give two or three examples from everyday life to show your meaning, then the listener can understand.
Try to paraphrase the next time you have trouble or when you want to be more clear. It takes time and practice to be able to speak English more clearly, but if you keep on trying, you’ll get it. Good luck!

But research suggests that rest after you study may help you remember what you have studied. With less activities after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not watch your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!

March 25 is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students(NDESEMSS全国中小学生安全教育日). The theme of the day this year is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure that their lives are safe.
A survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Center showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes(踩踏), earthquakes, fires and sports injuries(伤害).

Earthquakes are common natural disasters(灾害). When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.

You need some bread and milk. But half an hour later, you leave the supermarket with a trolley(手推车) full of food. What games do supermarkets play to make us spend so much money
The tricks usually start before you walk in. Outside the supermarket entrance, anybody who walks past can smell warm, fresh bread. That makes us hungry and ready to buy lots of food, not just bread.
Now you’re inside and, of course, a small basket would be fine, but all they have are trolleys. And of course the problem with a trolley is that it looks sad and lonely with just one or two products inside. So we may fill it with something. In fact, supermarket trolleys are actually getting bigger so that we buy more.
Of course, many people shop in supermarkets because they think everything is cheaper than in other shops. So supermarkets offer very cheap prices on some things but then have higher prices for other products. One new trick is to put red stickers on products. Customers(顾客) usually connect red stickers with lower prices so the red stickers is easy to be noticed, even when there is no reduction! Interestingly, this trick appears to work more with men than with women.
There is a story behind the position of everything in the supermarket. For example, customers often go only to buy milk. So they put it right at the back, forcing you to go past hundreds of shelves full of other products. The position of products on each shelf is also important. The most expensive products are usually at eye-level so you see these at once. The exception is anything that children might like. These products are on lower shelves so that kids see and even reach them.
Except what you see and smell in a supermarket, what about what you listen to In most supermarkets they have soft, slow music. It’s so relaxing that you slow down and spend more time(and money) in the store. You also move more slowly when the supermarket is busy. Experts suggest it’s better to shop when it is quieter on a Monday or a Tuesday for example. And be careful with queues at the checkouts. These are sometimes deliberate(故意), to make you buy something from the checkout shelves while you wait for your turn.
So, next time you go into your local supermarket, remember these tricks and see if you can come out with just the things you want.

We all know that exercise is good for your health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer.
Recently, researchers studied more than 55, 000 adults. About a quarter of the adults have a good habit of running. The study found these runners were much healthier than nonrunners. In fact, the runners lived, on average (平均), three years longer than the nonrunners.
Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are some ideas from fitness experts (健身专家) to lower the risk of injury (受伤) for people who are new to running.
⊙Take it easy.
Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance (里程) or speed.
⊙Get good running shoes.
There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should have a new pair of shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.
⊙Take good notes.
Take time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for things that happen again and again. For example, you may find that your knees hurt when you run sometimes. But perhaps you feel great when you have a rest between running days. These notes will help you make the best plan for running.

Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are scary. Watch for flashes of lightning(闪电). Listen for thunder(雷). If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed(棚) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.
Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity(电)either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can hurt your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not hit people very often. It is not likely(可能的)that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency(紧急情况)workers should care for a person who has been hit by lighting.
