Last year, I went to a summer camp in the United States with my classmates. It was my first time going abroad.
I lived with a host family in Los Angeles for five days. My host family was friendly and gave me lots of advice. For example, they said I should say“excuse me” if I have to interrupt(打断) someone or ask for directions.
I also took some classes. They were different from the classes I’ve had back home. In the US, each class is like a seminar. Students join in groups, speaking freely and creating a cheerful atmosphere(氛围). I had to work hard to learn more vocabularies, so I could better communicate with my international classmates. I used to pay little attention to my word usage(使用), but now I pay more attention.
During my visit, I also went to some famous universities in Boston, New York and Washington. We learned about the history behind the universities. At MIT(麻省理工学院), we saw lots of names on a wall in the hall. The tour guide told us they were the names of students who had lost their lives during wars. I was inspired(鼓舞) by the fact that they fought for their country.

Around the world, many people come together on the last day of December to celebrate the coming of the New Year. In Scotland, this is a very important occasion(场合), which is called Hogmanay. For some time, the celebration of it was more popular in Scotland than Christmas. From early childhood, I remember large family gatherings on New Year’s Eve when everyone would come together to bring in the bells.
The phrase “bring in the bells” in Scotland refers to the ten-second countdown (倒计时) to midnight. When bells chime(报时)all over Scotland, it means the beginning of the New Year.
Most towns in Scotland have celebration with fireworks and family gatherings.
This year, I decided to stay in my home city Glasgow and bring in the bells at home for the first time! My friend’s 21st birthday was on Hogmanay, so we went out to a party in Glasgow. We had a lovely night filled with birthday cake, cocktails (鸡尾酒) and dancing. There is a very friendly atmosphere (气氛) in Glasgow, with everyone hugging each other and wishing each other a Happy New Year!
On New Year’s Day in Scotland, it is traditional to have a meal with the family. Another tradition I have to mention is the “First Footing”. It’s that the first person to enter the home after Hogmanay has to bring some gifts with them, or it will bring bad luck for the coming year. I like this tradition, as people are usually very generous with their first footing gifts.

I think April Fool’s Day (愚人节) is a very unusual holiday. On April Fool’s Day, you have to watch out for practical jokes. You also can’t trust everything you hear on April 1st. Even some main newspapers will put fake news to fool people. I heard a story about how on April Fool’s Day, a London newspaper printed an article about how aliens (外星人) landed in England. This caused many people to be afraid and the local police were not very pleased with the newspaper.
It can be interesting to play tricks, but you’d better not to go too far. One April Fool’s Day, I called my mother from the university I attended. I told her that I failed all of my exams and because of this, I wasn’t able to graduate. She was so worried that she started to cry. I felt really bad about making her sad and tried to tell her it was just a joke. After I told her it was only an April Fool’s Day’s joke, she got angry with me that she hung up the phone. I had to call her back and apologize before she would talk to me again.
April Fool’s Day’s jokes can be funny, but you should be careful not to hurt people’s feelings and embarrass (使尴尬) them too much. Before you act, you should always make sure to put yourself in others’ shoes and think about how they might feel.
23.What can’t be trusted on April fool’s day
A.Everything you hear. B.Strangers’ jokes.

24.What does the underlined word “fake” mean in Chinese

A.A worker. B.A student. C.A teacher. D.A reporter.
26.Which is the following is TRUE

B.April Fool’s Day is a usual holiday.
C.The mother felt upset when she got the call.
D.You can do anything to fool your friends on April Fool’s Day.
27.What does the passage mainly tell us
A.Don’t play jokes on your friends.
B.It’s bad for newspapers to put fake news.
C.Children shouldn’t play jokes on their mothers.
D.Don’t hurt people’s feelings when playing jokes on April Fool’s Day.

Last week, City Daily did a survey about “How do Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival ” and “How do Americans celebrate Christmas ” About 500 Chinese people and 300 Americans took part in the online survey. Here are the results.
Such a survey can be naturally connected with the importance of Spring Festival for Chinese people, but what results in these differences To my understanding, at least two reasons can explain this result. For one thing, Chinese people have a strong sense of family, which enables many people to celebrate Spring Festival together with family members or relatives. For another, compared with before, some people are richer, and they have more freedom during the vacation. So, many people choose to celebrate this holiday by traveling. As for Americans, they prefer travelling. In fact, Americans like traveling on vacations, not only Christmas. Americans like exercising. There are no parks with fitness equipment (健身器材) in the US. So, they pay money to go to the gym.

Want to make a difference in your community Becoming a zero waste volunteer is the way to go!
Join a community garden
So many people don’t know where their food comes from. Growing food by yourselves teaches you the true value of food. What’s more, there is no need to pack the food you grow in the garden. Offer your time to help support a garden in your neighborhood. You’ll get to meet all kinds of people there, and possibly begin a conversation about zero waste lifestyle.
Lead or join a neighborhood clean-up
Usually, litter left unattended (无人看管的) will pollute our water systems. Even worse, any litter (in the ocean or on the ground) can be eaten by animals. This causes them to die of hunger slowly and painfully. Getting a group together to pick up trash (垃圾) around the neighborhood is a great way to combat this problem.
___________________
Going to a town hall meeting is a great idea. Because you can see and hear the problems in your community. Besides, you may even be able to speak at a town hall meeting as a guest speaker telling other people about zero waste lifestyle.
Organize a zero waste meeting
It’s so important to have a support group filled with people who also love zero waste lifestyle. Although online community is great, it cannot compare to real life support groups. If you want to gather people in your neighborhood to talk all things about zero waste, consider organizing a meeting. Just choose a place to meet (a local cafe works well), choose a date and time, and put up a notice on the Internet. You’ll get surprises!

As an exchange student, I must admit (承认) that at first America was a big culture shock for me.
I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents organized a lot of activities in my spare time so that I wouldn’t miss home or feel lonely.
However, life was hard to get used to. My main problem was with the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke so fast. Though I managed to get used to it, I still have problems because they used a lot of idioms(习语).
Another difference was with the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. I really miss the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home.
School was a big shock too. They do not require students to wear uniforms, so students can wear almost whatever they like. Some students have strange hairstyles (发型) as well. Some students even have pink or purple hair!
— By Brad Li
My dream was to see some real snow, so during the Christmas holiday, we took our passport (护照) and flew over the Pacific to Calgary, Canada. We took a bus to a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. As the bus climbed through the mountains, we saw the thick snow on the trees. I was dying to get out and play with it. At last, we reached the resort and quickly jumped out of the bus. This was our first experience with snow. We were like little children — we made snow balls, and threw them at one another. Then we check in at the hotel.
The next day, we put on our ski suits and gloves, took our skis and went outside onto the snow. Our instructor took us to a gentle slope (斜坡), and showed us some basic skills. To be honest, the first lesson was not a great success. I kept on falling over, and I had to hold on to a rope to keep my balance(平衡).
However, the next day, I only fell over a few times, and I managed to do a few rapid runs. I felt pleased with myself, and my instructor told me I was doing much better. Although it was very cold, I spent most of my holiday skiing. I had a wonderful time.
