What would you choose as your university major (专业) Perhaps some of you would choose archaeology(考古), even though it’s somewhat unpopular. Zhong Fangrong ranked fourth among Hunan province’s liberal arts (文科) students on the 2020 national college entrance exam, or gaokao. She decided to major in archaeology at Peking University.
This made news on social media. Many people were surprised by her decision and questioned her, saying that she was wasting her grades by choosing a major with few job opportunities.
However, Liu Zhiyan from the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology (文物考古研究院) said people who have questioned Zhong’s choice have a poor understanding of archaeology. After graduation, Zhong can work at public museums or archaeology research institutes, or she can work for private archaeological companies, Liu said. These are common choices for young people who major in archeology.
Actually, archaeology might have a brighter future than you might think. President Xi Jinping said several times that greater importance should be placed on archaeological research.
Archaeological findings show the origin (起源) and evolution (演变) of the Chinese civilization (文明) and can strengthen (加强) people’s confidence in Chinese culture, Xi said. Xi also noted that our country needs more archaeologists, especially younger ones.
Gu Yunong, a senior archaeology student at Peking University, has found the subject to be very meaningful. “For people like me, it allows us to travel between the past and the present,” Gu told TEENS. “Archaeology has made my life more meaningful.”

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasant voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class: he stands the whole time when he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality (音色) and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. The actor has to speak words which he has learned by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand (预先). What he has to do is to make all these carefully learned words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand anything, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, who are his students. He not only learns his part by heart, but also invents it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.
13.A good teacher can ________.
A.draw his students’ attention B.change his voice when needed
C.act out what he is teaching D.all the above
14.What’s the main difference between a teacher’s work and an actor’s
A.A teacher has to deal with unexpected situations.
B.A teacher knows how to control his voice better than an actor.
C.A teacher must remember everything while an actor just repeats a little.
D.A teacher needs to use his face to express feelings but an actor doesn’t.
15.According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG
A.A teacher cannot decide beforehand what exactly he is going to say in class.
B.Only the teacher has to learn by heart what he is going to say when working.
C.The teacher and the actor should speak loud and clearly when they work.
D.Both the teachers and the actors should hold the attention and interest of their audience.
16.This passage is trying to tell us ________.
A.how to become a great actor of gifts
B.what a teacher should do to be a better actor
C.what teachers and actors could learn from each other

Mapping out the future
Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. Before we started on our road trip, we packed up the car with snacks, water, and music. Thankfully, we also packed our GPS. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area and got us back or track in no time. It made me wonder: Who created maps in the first place After some searching online, I learned that the people responsible for mapping out roads, mountains, oceans, and other places around the world are called cartographers. I did some reading about the career. Here’s what I found:
What does a cartographer do
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study and interpret(诠释)geographic information. They use this information to make detailed maps of places around the globe. Some of these maps are digital. They are often used in GPS systems. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys. Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, rely on surveyors for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure land, air space, and water areas.
What does it take to be a cartographer
Most cartographers have a bachelors(学士) degree. The degree might be in cartography, geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in maths and computer science.
With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS systems, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.
How much do cartographers make
The average yearly salary for cartographers is $54,000. The lowest 10 percent earns less than $32,000. The top 10 percent cams more than $92,000.
________
In the U.S., job opportunities for cartographers are expected to grow. This is due to the increasing use of maps in the armed forces. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of many GPS systems and Web sites.
Based on what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost. I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!
40.In Para 1, the author included his experience in order to _______.

In the past, people who graduated from college felt proud of their academic(学业的) achievements and felt confident that their degree would help them to find a good job.
However, in the past four years the job market has changed greatly. This year’s college graduates are facing one of the worst job markets. For example, Ryan Stewart, a graduate of San Jose State University, got a degree in religious studies, but no job prospects. He points out that many people already working are getting laid off (解雇) and don’t have jobs, so it’s even harder for new college graduates to find jobs.
Four years ago, the future looked bright for the class of 2016. There were many high-tech job chances. Graduates received many job offers, and they were able to get jobs with high salaries and benefits such as insurance (保险) and paid vacations. However, “Times have changed and it’s a new market,” according to an officer of the San Jose State Career Center.
The officer says students who do find jobs started preparing two years ago. They worked during summer vacations, they have had several short-time jobs, and they’ve majored in (主修) one of the few fields that are still hot, like chemical engineering, accounting, or nursing where average starting salaries have actually increased over last year. Other popular fields (like information system management, computer science, and political science) have seen big declines (下降) in starting salaries.
Ryan Stewart (he had hoped to become a teacher) may go back to school in order to become a college teacher. He thinks college teaching could be a good career even in a bad economy.
In conclusion, these days a degree may not be a ticket to instant wealth for some students. For now, they can only hope the value of their degree will increase over time.
