“You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids’ lacrosse(长曲棍球) club.
I guess that there’s probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on... At this point the unwilling parent speaks up, “Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.”
I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.
In that sense, I’m pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I’d freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies
1.What can we infer about the parent from her reply in paragraph l?
A. She knows little about the club. B. She isn’t good at sports.
C. She just doesn’t want to volunteer. D. She’s unable to meet her schedule.
2.What does the underlined phrase “tug at the heartstrings” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Encourage teamwork. B. Appeal to feelings.
C. Promote good deeds. D. Provide advice.
3.What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3
A. She gets interested in lacrosse. B. She is proud of her kids.
C. She’ll work for another season. D. She becomes a good helper.
4.Why does the author like doing volunteer work
A. It gives her a sense of duty. B. It makes her very happy.
C. It enables her to work hard. D. It brings her material rewards.

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens(母鸡) to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's wellbeing(幸福). It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia(痴呆), a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: "I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school.
"I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed.
"It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful."
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out(推出) countrywide.
Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: "Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here."
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: "We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities."
1.What is the purpose of the project
A. To ensure harmony(和谐) in care homes.
B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged.
C. To raise money for medical research.
D. To promote the elderly people's welfare.

A. She has learned new life skills.
B. She has gained a sense of achievement.

3.What do the underlined words "embark on" mean in paragraph 7
A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate.
4.What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs
A. It is well received. B. It needs to be more creative.
C. It is highly profitable. D. It takes ages to see the results.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory—your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know whether the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive (交互) memory".
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memory as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memory; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
1.The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A.introduce the main topic B.show the author's attitude
C.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information
2.What can we learn about the first experiment
A.Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
3.In transactive memory, people _______.
A.keep the information in mind B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer D.remember how to find the information
4.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research
A.We are using memory differently. B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memory than before. D.We need a better way to access information.

My name is John and I must share with you an event which took place on Flight 1553 out of DCA. My wife and I were traveling to Miami to celebrate an achievement for her and as you can imagine, we were looking forward to fun, sun and laughter.
We boarded the aircraft, without a care in the world. It was cold in Washington and we were ready for Florida.
Shortly after taking my seat, I began to feel sick. I knew something wasn't right but just couldn't find out what was happening. Being a doctor and a stubborn man, I resisted efforts by my wife to call for assistance. As the aircraft began its departure roll, I lost consciousness for a short amount of time.
As I came around, I quickly realized a few things. Firstly, something very bad had happened to me. Secondly, the aircraft was too heavy with the fuel to go back home. Thirdly, my loss of consciousness had been so deep that I found myself out of control. So not only did I have a medical issue to deal with, but I also had to figure out how to deal with an embarrassing experience.
My wife gathered the crew as soon as it was safe to move about and I made my way to the washroom to attempt to clean up. I did my best and the flight crew members were so supportive, checking on me often and reassuring me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about.
It was their sympathy and support that helped me so much. During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurses, bringing blankets, food, drinks and caring and smile. I was thankful to them.
Paragraph 1:
Upon landing, I remained in my seat, allowing other people to go first,

Paragraph 2:
Hearing that, the captain left and returned a couple minutes later with a pair of his own blue jeans.

B
根据第三段中这位家长作出的贡献及"the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team"可知,她最终成为了志愿者队伍中重要的一员, 即她成了一个好帮手。故选D项。
The project was dreamed up by a local charity(慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.(该项目由当地一家慈善机构构想出来的,旨在减少老年人的孤独感,改善老年人的福祉。

Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: "Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here."(Penfold街60号的额外护理经理温迪·威尔逊(Wendy Wilson)是最先着手实施该项目的人之一,她说: "居民们非常欢迎该项目的想法和创意会议。我们期待着该项目能给这里的人们带来好处和乐趣。")可知他是这个项目的发起人之一。所以下划线的单词"embark on"的意思是"开始"。A.Improve改进;B.Oppose反对;C.Begin开始;D.Evaluate评估。故选C。

It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.(我们很高兴参加这个项目。 故选A。
D
Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. Later, the second group remembered the information better.
Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive(交互)memory".
故选A项。
So the main thing is just to show up and be adventurous, trying different foods and talking to strangers.
If you can start the conversation with a question及设空处后的it can bring in "I have this old, broken-down vehicle" or "I rode the bus..."
If you're the host排除A项。

The person I respect
There are many respectable people around us. The most beloved and respected person around me is my teacher, Ms Li. Though she has been teaching English for twenty years, she is still passionate about teaching. She is kind and considerate towards us just like our dear mother. We all respect her because she always tries new ways to make her classes lively and interesting. Hardworking and knowledgeable, she is one of the best teachers in our school. When we have a problem, we will turn to her for help. She always talks to us patiently and helps us to find a solution. In our eyes, she is not only our teacher, but also our best friend. Those are why she deserves our respect.
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
Upon landing, I remained in my seat, allowing other people to go first. As I was in my seat, I looked up and saw the captain standing with a warm smile. "What can I do for you " the captain asked. I told him I was OK. I was very embarrassed and concerned because of the previous things. He said, "What sizes of pants do you wear " His voice was full of care. I was puzzled and replied, "34×34. Why do you ask this "
Paragraph 2:
Hearing that, the captain left and returned a couple minutes later with a pair of his own blue jeans. The man opened his own luggage and gave a complete stranger his pants. I didn't know what to say. Then I looked at my wife, who smiled and, without saying a word, let me know it was OK. I made my way to the exit and he said," Change on the aircraft. It is fine. "Because of the experience, I was thankful to him for his kindness. I made up my mind to treat others with kindness.
