Soft winds blew throughout the Windy City today. We welcomed the winds, as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew, bringing us some coolness — and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.
Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city's most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.
We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: pierogies, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants (移民) started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the US.
We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for Talk 2 Us. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.
Meanwhile, Adam searched for some locations around the city to shoot some videos. He chose a spectacular(壮丽的)spot: Navy Pier, one of Chicago's most-visited attractions. The winds from Lake Michigan kept visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never failed to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels!
Our time in Chicago has come to an end. Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the "gateway to the West" , wait for us.
1.Why did the author and her companions like the soft winds
A.They brought warmth to them. B.They made them feel comfortable.
C.They left the sky blue and beautiful. D.They improved the quality of the air.
2.What did the author and her companions mainly do in Chicago
A.They enjoyed famous local foods. B.They visited Polish communities.
C.They explored for foreign customs. D.They studied the history of the city.
3.The author and her companions stayed online _________.
A.communicating with strangers abroad B.asking for information on foreign foods
C.sharing their travel plan with strangers D.learning about different cultures in the world
4.The underlined part "head over heels" in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by ___________.
A.bored B.relaxed C.fascinated D.disappointed

Being blind at birth is tough in any case. But things were even harder for Srikanth Bolla who was bom in a small village in India, where the common belief was that kids with disabilities were "of no use" and therefore, better off dead. Fortunately, Srikanth's parents loved their son and refused to give him up. Instead, they encouraged the blind boy to dream big and reach for the stars.
Srikanth did not disappoint his parents. The now twenty-seven-year-old is the founder and CEO of Bollant Industries.
Of course, getting here was not easy. Being both blind and poor meant that Srikanth had to face hard challenges. As a young boy, Srikanth attended a regular school near his home. Unfortunately, the students and teachers didn't quite like him because of his disability. As a result, the young boy was largely ignored and often spent the entire day alone.
Concerned this would hold back Srikanth's development, his family decided to send him to a special school in Hyderabad. Sure enough, the young boy soon rose to the top of his class, winning awards in speech and debate competitions. But Srikanth was prevented from studying sciences when he reached 10th grade, because it was thought too "dangerous" for a blind student. Not wanting to give up, Srikanth took legal action and became the first blind student in the country allowed to study sciences.
Later, after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Srikanth set up Bollant Industries in 2012. For just four years, it became a powerhouse with over 450 employees, 70% of whom are physically challenged.
Being disabled doesn't mean being unable. "If the world looks at me and says, 'Srikanth, you can do nothing.' I will look back at the world and say, 'I can do anything.'" the young man says.
1.Why was Srikanth sent to a special school
A.His parents became richer than before. B.He could be treated equally there.
C.This school was free for disabled students. D.He was sent away by the regular school.
2.What can we know about Srikanth from the text
A.He was born in a poor village. B.He cared about disabled people.
C.His parents were strict with him in his study. D.He was loved by the villagers when he was young.
3.What words can best describe Srikanth
A.Intelligent and determined. B.Active and honest.
C.Patient and careful. D.Kind but stubborn.
4.What can be the best title for the text
A.Chances Are Everywhere B.No Challenges, No Success
C.A Big Dream Makes a Difference D.Disability Doesn't Mean Being Unable
D
All day long, at an MSF distribution center, humanitarian(人道主义的) supplies make their way to some of the most dangerous spots on the planet. Specially marked boxes are being packed with medicines, supplies and contamination suits, which are on their way to Ebola-affected Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Kathy Dedieu became a sanitation (卫生设备) and water engineer for MSF a decade ago. We meet in Paris at MSF headquarters. Dedieu has just returned from Liberia, where MSF is working to help reopen the hospitals. Her job is to make sure that clean parts of the hospitals are kept separate from areas that are polluted. She says the situation there is a complete disaster. "Even during the war, I haven't seen a health system close so fast. The hospitals are empty because the health staff just aren't there," she says. Dedieu was in Liberia during that country's civil war in 2003.
MSF was founded in 1971 by a group of doctors and journalists. "I remember being criticized in the 1980s as a 'medical cowboy'," says Rony Brauman, who headed MSF from 1982 to 1994. "We were blamed for riding in, distributing our pills and creating unreasonable expectations." But Brauman says that's the nature of health care. "We raise expectations; we create new diseases by treating old diseases," he says. "That's how it works in general. It was a kind of fight. MSF won that fight," says Brauman.
MSF doctor Cameron Bopp says he's worked with other humanitarian organizations but always missed the level of devotion and motivation he's found at MSF. "The main thing that's different about MSF from the point of view of someone like me who goes out and works in the field is that when there's an emergency, other organizations say, 'Whoa, this is an emergency. We're gonna be there as soon as we get funding.' And MSF has the funding," he says. "We start right away." Ninety percent of MSF's funding comes from a devoted base of five million donors. That gives it the independence to speak out and do what's really needed.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To introduce a function of MSF.
B.To show the seriousness of Ebola.
C.To explore a distribution center of MSF.
D.To encourage donations to Ebola-affected countries.
2.What can be learned about Kathy Dedieu
A.She is working in Liberia.
B.She founded MSF with many other doctors.
C.She was once a soldier in the civil war in 2003.
D.She helps with pollution prevention in hospitals.
3.What was people's attitude to MSF in the early years
A.Hopeful. B.Curious. C.Uncaring. D.Disapproving.
4.How is MSF different from other humanitarian organizations according to Cameron Bopp
A.It involves many journalists. B.It has a lot of reliable donors.
C.It is operated by doctors themselves. D.It obtains funding from the government.

What are some ways to deal with noisy neighbors
Noisy neighbors are a common problem in a society where many people live closely together. Obviously, this issue can be the most significant when you share walls or a floor/ceiling with a neighbor. Then how can you tackle noisy neighbors
You should be aware that not all neighbors are going to respond to your request. ①_________ If noisy neighbors don't change their behavior, the next step should be to write a letter, detailing the noise. ②_________ If noisy neighbors respond in such bad manners that you fear for your safety, your next step when noise occurs should be a call for the police.
When the noise remains ongoing, you should definitely report it to local authorities. ③_________ Continue with calls for the police department when absolutely necessary. You might want to connect other neighbors who may also be bothered by the same noise. In fact, the problem is resolved when the noisy neighbors know you are going to call the police.
Do be aware that you cannot always request noisy neighbors to be quiet. ④_________ And what you define as noisy neighbors may not really have bothering behavior. Carefully read specific apartments' HOA rules to see if your neighbor's noise is actually breaking rules.
⑤_________ If you have followed through with the steps and the letters, don't start banging things around in your home or turning up the music to annoy the neighbor. Simply report behavior to the appropriate authorities. If you do not, it will weaken your case and make it necessary for you to take the matter to a small court.
A. There is one exception to this.
B. And some may respond in bad manners.
C. Some people have lower tolerance for the noise.
D. Start with landlords or the Homeowner's Association (HOA).
E. Also, it is wise not to respond to noise in an angry fashion.
F. The letter should state the dates when the quarrel happens.
G. You should first attempt to address noisy neighbors about the noise.

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday He must really be a nerd (书呆子).
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him up so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw the terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he said, "Thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him.
Over next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, he had the highest marks in the class and was chosen to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a lot, and I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle. I said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks, the really grateful one, and said "Thanks" with a smile. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began, Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give him or her. I am going to tell you a story.
Paragraph 1:
I just looked at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
I smiled back in tears. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A
根据第一段中的“you'll create positive changes in a poor and remote community”和第六段中的“All our projects aim to promote the development of poor and remote communities.”
The wind blew, bringing us some coolness—and making the weather not that hot"可知,作者和她的同伴们喜欢微风是因为微风使她们感觉舒服,故选B。
We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods"可知,作者和她的同伴们在芝加哥做的事情主要是享用当地有名的美食。
由第五段中的"a spectacular(壮丽的) spot" "one of Chicago's most-visited attractions" "the view of the Chicago skyline never failed to impress"可知,这里的景色非常美,使得所有人都神魂颠倒。"
Unfortunately, the students... the entire day alone. Concerned this would hold back... in Hyderabad.
For just four years, it became a powerhouse with over 450 employees,70%of whom are physically challenged.
Sure enough, the young boy soon rose to the top of his class, winning awards in speech and debate competitions. Not wanting to give up, Srikanth took legal action and became the first blind student in the country allowed to study sciences. 故选A项。
故选A项。
Her job is to make sure that clean parts of the hospitals are kept separate from areas that are polluted. Dedieu has just returned from Liberia可以判断,Dedieu目前不在利比里亚,因此A项错误;由第二段的最后一句话可知,2003年利比里亚国内战争爆发时,Dedieu在利比里亚,并没有提到她在当兵,因此C项错误;由第三段第一句话可以看出,无国界医生组织并不是由Dedieu建立的,因此B项错误。故选D项。
根据最后一段中的when there's an emergency... do what's really needed可知,Cameron Bopp认为无国界医生组织不同于其他人道主义组织最主要的一点是它有许多可靠的捐赠者。
①根据上文中的"not all neighbors are going to respond to your request"可知不是所有的邻居都会回应你提出的要求。
D项中的"Start with"和下文中的"Continue with"形成呼应,故选D。
Do be aware that you cannot always request noisy neighbors to be quiet."
⑤根据下文中的"don't start banging things around in your home or turning up the music to annoy the neighbor"可知,不要开始在你的家里猛敲东西,也不要调大音乐来惹怒邻居。
该空应该对应上一句中的"he transports to and from school", drive意为“驾车送(人)”。
act on对……起作用; settle on定居,决定;check on检查,核实;agree on对……

Hello, everyone. Among all the foreign travellers and adventurers, my favourite is Marco Polo, the famous Italian traveller and merchant, who travelled along the ancient Silk Road to China in the 13th century.
He travelled in China for 17 years, visiting many parts of China and was amazed to find how beautiful and powerful China was Although Marco Polo was not the only traveller who set foot in China, what set him apart from the others was that he introduced Chinese culture and scientific inventions to other parts of the world.
In my opinion, Marco Polo is really a great traveller, whose mission is to promote the exchange of different cultures and spread the seeds of civilization.
Thank you!
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
I just looked at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. Kyle had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. Meanwhile, I found he looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. When his eyes caught mine, I was able to see tears shimmering in his smiling eyes.
Paragraph 2:
I smiled back in tears. Not until that moment did I realize what a big difference one small gesture had made to him. I even saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling with that same grateful smile. It dawned on me that never should we underestimate the power of our actions. With one small gesture we can change a person s life. For better or for worse.
