Mike Shepherd (2011) Skiddaw in Winter Cumbria, England It was an extremely cold winter's evening and freezing fog hung in the air. I climbed to the top of a small rise and realised that the mist was little more than a few feet deep, and though it was only a short climb, I found myself completely above it and looking at a wonderfully clear view of Skiddaw with the sun setting in the west. I used classical techniques, translated from my college days spent in the darkroom into Photoshop, to achieve the black-and-white image(图像).
Timothy Smith (2014) Macclesfield Forest Cheshire, England I was back in my home town of Macclesfield to take some winter images. Walking up a path through the forest towards Shutlingsloe, a local high point, I came across a small clearing and immediately noticed the dead yellow grasses set against the fresh snow. The small pine added to the interest and I placed it centrally to take the view from the foreground right through into the forest.

Having attended a first-aid-at-work course, Brian Cracknell soon found himself responding to two emergencies in a week.
Brian was at work in his bus company office in Weston-super-Mare on May 18 when a colleague called to say there had been an accident at a bus stop nearby. He ran to the scene with his first-aid kit and found an old lady sitting at the bus stop. When boarding the bus, the old lady painfully hurt her left leg, which was bleeding.
He introduced himself, and asked some basic first-aid questions to get a general picture of her health. Then he put his jacket on the floor, using the lady's coat as a pillow, and gently laid her down so he could raise her legs and apply some bandages. Brian said, "At first I was a bit worried about remembering to do all the right things. I made sure she was as comfortable as possible." When he had nearly finished, he told the lady that she was his first one. The lady said he was doing a great job.
Just a week later, Brian got a second call-out to help another lady at a bus stop.
Having used his new skills twice within a short time, Brian has decided to sign up as a Red Cross first-aid volunteer. With circus animals increasingly becoming a thing of the past, what happens to all those newly-freed animals that spent their lives in zoos and circuses Can any animal, after years in captivity(圈养), ever be freed
Even a lifetime in the best zoo will have left animals too affected by years of sheltered existence. No case makes this more heartbreakingly obvious than the story of Keiko, the whale star of Free Willy (1993). A massive letter-writing campaign demanding his freedom led to Keiko being flown to Iceland in 1998 for release. Unfortunately, captured at a very young age and too used to human contact, Keiko never managed to fit into a wild population, struggled to hunt, and eventually died of disease in 2003.
"For the longest time, the idea of returning animals to the wild was just off the table, but now we're seeing people in the field questioning the long-held belief that it's impossible to return captive animals to their natural habitat," says Katie Moore of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. "Yes, in a lot of cases it is still impossible, especially if the animals were very young when captured. But for some animals, if we proceed scientifically and thoughtfully, it can be done."
Consider the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) in Zimbabwe, which for 15 years has worked to introduce lions to the wild. Their method of release involves multiple stages, which eventually sees the release of wild offspring(后代) from previously captive adults. First, lions that have been raised by humans are released into a large fenced area with small animals to hunt. Next, those animals eventually form a wild group and produce new baby lions. Then, those baby lions, who have grown together and formed social bonds, are eventually released as a group.
"For some animals, reintroduction will always be difficult, such as baby elephants, which get used to human care very quickly," says Moore. "But if we don't push boundaries we will never know what is possible."
1.What caused Keiko's sad story
A. He fell sick during film-making.
B. He was brought in from the wild at an old age.
C.He failed to seek human company.
D. He was ill-equipped for life in the wild.
2.What does Moore think of returning captive animals to their natural habitat
A. It is possible for some animals. B. It is in their best interests.
C. It can cause them harm. D. It is a completely unrealistic idea.
3.Which of the following words can describe ALERT's lion release work
A. Dangerous. B. Eventful. C. Gradual. D. Cruel.
4.What is the best title for the text
A. What are the challenges facing animal reintroduction projects
B. Why do some released animals fail to live in dependently
C. Can captive animals ever truly return to the wild
D. Are captured animals willing to go back to the natural world
D
Due to the effects of climate change, new species of birds are coming to the UK. A recent study by the RSPB and Durham University has found that European birds have been migrating further north by an average of 300 miles. While fewer birds, such as the tufted duck, are returning for the winter months, there has been an increase in other species as they seek a new holiday home or a quiet stop-off!
It's thought that in the UK, we will gain many more species than we'll lose through climate change—a 3℃ change won't affect the migrations of most birds, so birds such as robins, blackbirds, blue tits and greenfinches will still be regular visitors to our gardens. Climate change has been affecting domestic birds though—the Dartford warbler, a species that was literally down to just a couple of pairs in the UK in the 1960s, has been spreading further north from it's traditional home in south-east England. Other birds such as green woodpeckers and nuthatches have already been regular visitors to the country, but have now started to spread further north, with some even going as far as northern England.
Scops owls have also been regular visitors, mostly in the south of England. And over the next 50 years or so, these visitors will eventually start to settle in the UK as they continue to breed(繁殖) and adapt themselves to the conditions.
Other birds are, for the moment, just passing through on their migration, using the UK as a pitstop. The exotic-looking hoopoe—a striking black-and-white-winged bird, the size of a mistle thrush—regularly passes England's south coast and, although it doesn't breed here, up to 100 of them can turn up during the spring.
As climate change continues, there's nothing to suggest that these birds won't continue to breed northwards during the next decade and spotting them will become a regular occurrence throughout the country.
1.What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. There are fewer birds in the UK due to the climate change.
B. Birds won't be affected by temperature change within 3℃.
C. It may get warmer than before in the north of the UK.
D. Birds in the UK don't need migrations any more.
2.Which birds are expected to live in the UK in the future
A. Scops owls. B.Robins. C. Dartford warbler. D. Hoopoe.
3.What does the underlined word "pitstop" in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Garage. B.Gas station. C. Resting place. D.Nest.
4.What is the main idea of the text
A. Birds visit the UK regularly in winter.
B. Climate change is affecting the population and migrations of birds in the UK.
C. Birds start to inhabit the northern parts of the UK.
D. The population of birds in the world is on the increase due to the climate change.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
I will share the kind act that I met with all of you. We had dozens of restaurant options within a short distance, so we often took advantage of this luxury. On one occasion, I ran out to get some food. I saw the clouds in the distance and decided I could make it there and come back in time, but I was wrong. I was about to leave the restaurant when the rain just poured. The street was flooded within minutes.
But I had my little girl and husband waiting for me back at home, and they were hungry, so I knew I had to make a run for it. The owner of the restaurant tried to encourage me to wait inside, but I insisted that I should go. At this point, he grabbed his umbrella and said, “Okay, let's go.” Of course I tried to convince him that it wasn't necessary for him to walk me home, but I knew I wouldn't prevent him from doing so. So off we went. We quickly realized that the umbrella wouldn't help much in keeping us dry. He walked me all the way to my apartment building, where he said goodbye and ran back to the restaurant.
Again I encountered this act of kindness when I was making my way to the bus. As I waited at the crosswalk, it began to rain lightly. Nothing was too bad, but a young guy nearby felt like it was heavy enough to make him step next to me and hold his umbrella above both of us. After a while, the lights turned green. I thanked him and walked across the street.
Getting around the city when you are six months pregnant and have a two-year-old kid can be challenging sometimes. One spring afternoon, I realized I needed something from the store to finish preparing for dinner. The weather seemed a bit questionable but the store was around the corner so I decided to risk it.
Paragraph 1:
It wasn't raining when we left so we didn't carry my umbrella.

Paragraph 2:
As we crossed the street the woman offered me her umbrella.

Hello, everyone! I'm glad to have this chance to share some ideas about garbage classification with you.
In my understanding, the earth is home to every individual, and it's our duty to protect the environment voluntarily. By sorting the waste, we can not only reduce pollution but also conserve energy, which will pave the way for the recycling of valuable resources.
For the sake of our environment and life, we are expected to learn to sort the rubbish and make it a habit. Every individual can make a difference and let's bring a brighter future for the planet!
Thank you!

Paragraph 1:
It wasn't raining when we left so we didn't carry my umbrella. We quickly crossed the street to buy what we needed in our daily life. We were walking out of the store when a heavy rain fell. We wanted to cross the street and had to wait for the lights to turn green. I noticed a young couple watching us.
Paragraph 2:
As we crossed the street the woman offered me her umbrella. I said my apartment building was nearby but she insisted that I take it. I refused, but she said it just started to pour. At the same time, she handed me the umbrella and left with her husband. Staring at her figure, I was too moved to express thanks to her. I went home with the umbrella and put it away in a secret place. It was a sign of kindness.
