There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets(桶). One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled(溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.
Sometimes the new bucket would say, "See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!"
And all that the old bucket could say was, "I know I'm not very useful, but I can only do my best. I'm happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least."
One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, "You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path."
Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare(光秃秃的) earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.
1.What does the underlined word "dilapidated" probably mean
A.Great. B.Dark. C.Worn-out. D.Excellent.
2.What was the old bucket ashamed of
A.His past. B.His aging. C.His manner. D.His leaking.
3.The new bucket made conversations with the old one mainly to _________.
A.laugh at the old one B.take pity on the old one
C.show off its beautiful looks D.praise the gardener's kindness
4.Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener
A.Because it was used to keep a balance. B.Because it stayed in its best condition.
C.Because it was taken as a treasure. D.Because it had its own function.

The world's animal populations have decreased by more than two-thirds since 1970, according to recent research from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had reduced by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation(开发) of the environment, pollution, and climate change were major causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers added, "If we cannot limit warming to 1.5℃, climate change is likely to become the primary cause of biodiversity(生物多样性) loss in the coming years."
Wildlife populations in Latin America and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have reduced by an average of 83 percent since1970. For example, the population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65percent between 1994 and 2016.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species' population reduction can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem's ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to develop, but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems.
Our future depends on reversing(扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can't solve one without solving the other. Everyone plays a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the wholeness of the ecosystems on which we all depend.
1.What has been the greatest threat to wildlife populations recently
A.Illegal hunting. B.Global warming.
C.Land-use change. D.Environmental pollution.
2.How does the author explain the reduction of freshwater wildlife in Paragraph 3
A.By listing figures. B.By analyzing the causes.
C.By making a comparison. D.By referring to a concept.
3.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.Climate change threatens many wild animals.
B.Farmland is the basis of life-sustaining systems.
C.Extreme weather events have become more frequent.
D.Species variety is important to maintain a stable ecosystem.
4.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To explain the difficulty of restoring ecosystems.
B.To call on people to take action to protect nature.
C.To present the increasing trend of climate change.
D.To show people's efforts in making up for the loss of nature.
D
When I was eight years old, I entered an art contest hosted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and I won. I was so excited, but I didn't even know what "endangered" meant at that time. That night, I asked my mom and we found out there were over 6,000 endangered species! I felt sad and angry. I told my mom I would like to help save them from extinction. She asked me, "How " And I told her my plan.
She said once I painted ten, she'd create a Facebook page for me. To my mom's surprise, I had 10 paintings done in 5 days. My Facebook page becomes a platform where I publish new works, share my opinions and raise people's environmental awareness.
Facebook reporters came to interview me and wrote my story and then many other websites shared it, making me shoot to fame overnight. My Facebook followers increased rapidly and some offered me money to hold an art exhibition. One of my paintings was sold at the Wolf Conservation Center at auction(拍卖) for $25,000 this summer.
By the age of 13, I have created more than three hundred paintings of endangered species. I use my website to sell them, and I also donate(捐赠) them and auction them to raise money to support the organizations I work with like IFAW, the Wolf Conservation Center in New York and Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots. I did a lot of research before choosing those organizations because I wanted to make sure the money I donated would be used for protecting wildlife and their natural homes. Those organizations have helped my dreams come true. Up to now I have donated $69,000, and my goal is $100,000.
We all have an important role to play and if we work together, we will change the world. We need to be brave and original; we should stand out and speak up. It isn't always easy or popular but being true to ourselves is the bravest thing we can do.
1.What plan did the author most probably tell her mother
A.To find out the number of endangered species.
B.To raise people's awareness of animal protection.
C.To establish a Facebook page for endangered species.
D.To sell her paintings to help save endangered species.
2.Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined part "shoot to fame" in Paragraph 3
A.Highly stressed. B.Make a fortune.
C.Widely known. D.Go wild with delight.
3.Which of the following best describes the author
A.Talented and caring. B.Patient and brave.
C.Independent and creative. D.Friendly and concerned.
4.What can we learn from the author's experience
A.We should learn to be more creative.
B.We should express our opinions bravely.
C.We should raise money to support organizations.
D.We should try our best to make the world a better place.

I've had the pleasure and good fortune to live and work in several countries as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. During one assignment(分派的任务), I lived in Prague in the Czech Republic. I often took weekend trips to nearby cities to explore the countryside.
On a weekend, I took a three-hour bus ride to visit a city with a fine castle(城堡) and wonderful museums. Before I got off the bus, I checked the schedule in order to come back to the station timely; I was only planning a day trip and did not intend to stay overnight.
After a wonderful day seeing the sights, I had a brief dinner and had plenty of time to walk the half mile to catch the 6:15 bus. When I got there, no one was in line for the bus to Prague. Finally, I discovered the last bus for the day had left at 5:15.
This was a serious problem. About a month earlier, my pocket was picked and I lost about 1,000 dollars. To avoid having the same thing happen again, I only carried enough cash to cover my expenses for the day. I certainly did not have enough money to stay in a hotel- But with no transportation to Prague and being a positive person, I decided to try asking.
I first found the Youth Hotel, but it was completely full. Setting aside 5 crowns for the bus fare, I had 9 crowns to spend. Every hotel I tried to check into charged 22 to 25 crowns, until I had only one more recommendation. If it was too expensive, I'd have to spend the night on a park bench, an uncomfortable idea for someone almost 60 years old.
The hotel looked much nicer than I expected. It would surely cost more than 9 crowns. The desk clerk spoke some English, so I told her my story.
The clerk listened carefully, and then asked me to wait.

答案:whose; finest; be chosen; curiosity; When/ As; pointed; to find; gently; surrounding; on
set out to do sth是固定搭配,意为“出发去做某事”。
As we all know, more and more wildlife is faced with extinction, whose habitats are becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. Even worse, to make profits, hunters are killing wildlife.
It is urged that we should change our way of life and protect the habitats of wildlife. Besides, when the buying stops, the killing can too. If everyone refuses any product made from wildlife, the killing can be stopped.
Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife. Let's take action now.
第二节
The clerk listened carefully, and then asked me to wait. A woman came out and introduced herself in very good English. She was the hotel manager and asked what she could do to help me. Again I told my story and made an offer. I promised if I could stay overnight, I would give her 9 crowns and mail the rest to her the next day. She said I was welcome to stay, and that she would accept what I had in my pocket as the total payment for a room. Then she added, "If you need some money for dinner, I will be happy to give you some of my own so that you can have a proper meal!"
I was deeply moved by the manager's kindness and generosity. I could barely manage to express my deepest gratitude. As a result, I spent the night in a clean and tastefully decorated room, rather than a cold, hard park bench. As soon as I got back to Prague, I wrote the manager a note of thanks for her thoughtfulness. She reminded me that kindness and unselfishness are international characteristics. It has been the most wonderful trip for me so far!
