The Biggest Stadiums in the World
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 80 A.D., the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world's best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome's Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city's Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations—not to mention the modern sports fan's desire for a good view and a comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量) slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang, D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1, 1989.
Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October1, 1927.
Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, U.S. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, U.S. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7, 1922.

When I was in my fourth year of teaching, I was also(and am still)a high school track and field coach(田径教练). One year, I had a student, John, who entered my class when he was a junior. John changed to our school from Greece, and seemed to be interested in sports, so I encouraged him to join our track team. I explained to him that even though he had never taken part in it before, I did believe that he could do well in any event, and that I would be willing to coach him in whichever ones interested him. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice.
About a month later, I had found out from other sources (来源) that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, “John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn't you play tennis instead It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you're so good at it.” John answered, “Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason.”
From then on, I often remember my student's reply. I told it to a friend and she suggested I write it down to share somewhere with more teachers. No matter how critical(挑剔的) students can be of themselves, I've found that a simple “I trust that you can do it!” can go a long way!

Adolescents who routinely engaged in moderate and energetic exercise showed long-term improvements in their academic performance, the British Journal of Sports Medicine study reported.
"Our study suggests that the effect of physical activity may be quite large," John Reilly, a professor at the University of Strathclyde said. The researchers looked at a sample of about 5,000 children who were involved in a long-term study that tracks children born in the UK between 1991 and 1992. When children reached 11 years old, their daily physical activity levels were measured using an accelerometer for three to seven days. The device, similar to a pedometer tracking the number of steps taken, recorded the average time children exercised, which was 29 minutes a day for boys and 18 minutes for girls.
"The actual levels of daily physical activity at age 11 were quite low," Mr. Reilly noted. The children had their academic performance tested at ages 11 and 13 with compulsory national tests for students, and also at 15 or 16 with the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exam. The tests assessed the children's abilities in English, math and science subjects.
When factors that could affect academic performance including birth weight, mother's age at delivery and other socioeconomic factors were adjusted, the results showed that the more children participated in moderate and energetic physical activity, the higher their test scores were at age 11 in all three subjects. For girls, science scores were most strongly linked to exercise. When they followed up with the kids at age 13, their academic scores were still linked to how much they had exercised when they were 11 years old.
By the time the youngsters took the GCSE exam, each 17-minute-per-day increase in physical activity for the boys was linked to an improvement in their scores. Every additional 12-minuteincrease a day in exercise for the girls was also linked to an increased score as well, especially in the science category.
The researchers have called for more studies to look at the possible academic benefits that could be gained if students exercise the recommended 60 minutes or more a day.
1.How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By asking different questions.
B. By using tracking equipment.
C. By asking teens to take some tests.
D. By asking teens to report the exercise time.
2.According to the text, what can affect a teen's academic performance
A. His age. B. His mother's weight.
C.His mother's age at delivery. D. His birth date.
3.What does the underlined part in paragraph 4 mean
A. When the children were tested again at age 13.
B. When the kids continued physical exercise at age 13.
C. When they moved along with the 13-year-old kids.
D.When they took an interest in the 13-year-old kids.
4.According to the researchers, how long should the students exercise per day
A. 12 minutes. B. 18 minutes. C.30 minutes. D. 60 minutes.

Skeleton is one of the three sliding sports at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, alongside the luge(单雪橇) and bobsleigh(大雪橇). With only six medals up for grabs, skeleton has the fewest events at the Winter Games-which means competition will be fierce.
The sport of skeleton has its roots in the most popular winter pastime: sleighing. In the mid-19th century, British and American holidaymakers built the first toboggan(平底雪橇) run in Davos in 1882, and thus the sport of sleighing began.
Two years later, in 1884, the famed Cresta Run-a natural ice skeleton racing toboggan track was built in St. Moritz. Switzerland (the course has hosted the annual Grand National championships since 1885).
In 1892, a new sledge made entirely of steel was introduced, and some claim that its bony appearance gave the sledge and the sport the name 'skeleton'.
Men's skeleton was first introduced on the Olympic program in the 1928 Games in St. Moritz. But due to the sport only being available at the Cresta Run at the time, it fell into obscurity(默默无闻) while the luge and bobsleigh grew in popularity. However, in 2002, the skeleton was reintroduced as a men's and women's event at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, and has remained a part of the Olympic program ever since.
While Great Britain has the most medals (nine) in skeleton competition at the Olympics, the top spot belongs to the United States (eight medals) by virtue of having four silvers to Great Britain's one(both nations have three golds, while Britain has five bronze medals, and the United States one).
Great Britain is the only nation to have won a medal every time skeleton has featured at the Olympic Games, and has won at least one medal in each of the five contests of women's skeleton since its introduction.
1.How many events does skeleton have in the Olympics
A.Two. B.Three. C.Five. D.Six.
2.When did skeleton first appear
A.In 1882. B.In 1885. C.In 1892. D.In 1928.
3.Why did skeleton fall into obscurity
A.Because its material steel was rare.
B.Because there was only one run for it.
C.Because only men could take part in it.
D.Because it was not on the Olympic program.
4.What makes America top Great Britain in skeleton at the Olympics
A.The number of medals. B.The composition of medals.
C.The virtue of the athletes. D.The times of hosting the Olympics.

I remember my first home, a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony (阳台). When my mum was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids play in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mum was absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my dad. After work he used to grow carnations in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.
He took care of them with much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems(茎) were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and take care of them. "No one should touch them," he said to Mum. Every day, when he came home from work, he went straight to the balcony.
Mum used to tell us: "Do not touch Dad's flowers." For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

I agreed with her. We took action as soon as Mum and Dad went out for work. First, Maria went with me to the nearest grocery on our street to obtain the false flowers. When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals. To our surprise , Dad was mad about it, yelling at us, "Don't you know touching is not allowed What on earth have you done " We fled to our room with tears. Before long, Dad calmed down and talked with us patiently. We explained the reason which moved him greatly. Since then, we have always planted carnations together, which enables us to understand each other better and is the fascinating time we treasure most.
