Judy Wright and her husband decided to move closer to their son, Chris, who lived in Georgia. About a month after the move, Judy fell ill, suffering from her ongoing (不间断的) battle against Parkinson’ disease.
Her condition worsened rapidly and she required medical care at home. The family hired a nursing aid who canceled at the last minute. Instead, a woman named TunDe Hector showed up in her place.
One day, TunDe shared a story with Judy and her family. She remembered a particularly difficult day in 2014, when a stranger had helped her with a kind gesture. She had run out of gas, and with only $5 in her pocket, was walking to a gas station. A man saw her walking and turned his car around. He paid for her gas and gave her all the cash left in his wallet. Upon hearing the story, Judy’s son, Chris, took off his hat and said, “That was me!” He was the stranger that had helped TunDe on that difficult day.
During the care of Judy, the Wright family learned about TunDe’s family and her own dream. The nursing aid, TunDe hoped that one day she could become an OB-GYN nurse. Her tuition was past due (逾期)and she had a family to care for, but she was determined to achieve that goal for herself and her family.
Judy died on July 9,2017.Instead of flowers, her family asked mourners (悼念者) to donate to TunDe’s education, to assist her in paying for her nursing school. In less than a week, they raised more than $8,000 and presented her with the surprise check.

Many of us know about Russia’s Lake Baikal from our textbooks, or by listening to Chinese singer Li Jian’s hit song, Lake Baikal. But over the past decade, the world’s deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.
Each March since 2005,about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. They come to explore the lake’s breathtaking beauty and challenge themselves in unpredictable conditions. The 26-mile (41.84-kilometer) journey starts on the lake’s eastern shore. In March, the ice is a meter thick and iron-hard. Runners cross this frozen surface, finishing on the western side of the lake.
Known as the “blue eye of Siberia”, Lake Baikal has exceptionally clear waters. This means its ice is almost perfectly transparent (透明的).“Seen from above, a runner on the ice looks as if he or she were jogging through space.” The New York Times noted.
The landscape might be beautiful, but it’s also harsh. Strong winds blast (侵袭) across the lake and frostbite can occur within half an hour. Runners say the cold climate is what draws them. They want to test their limits.
“When you are in such an environment, you don’t have cars around you, and you don’t have the noise around. I think these extreme races allow you to be alone with nature.” Alicja Barahona, a 64-year-old runner from the US, told ABC news.
The location offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon. The finishing line is visible from the start, but the endless white offers no progress markers. The race also ends with little fanfare (隆重的欢迎). Tourists crowding the ice are mostly addicted to snapping selfies (自拍) and just ignore the runners.
For some runners, the absence of spectators makes the race more challenging, because it’s lonely. They must fight with themselves. “You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself. All you need to do is defeat yourself.” Veronique Messina, a French runner, told the Telegraph.
1.What can we know about the Baikal Ice Marathon from the article
A.It takes runners from the northern end to the southern end of the lake.
B.It involves extreme weather and beautiful scenery.
C.It attracts more and more participants each year.
D.It is about 26 kilometers in length.
2.How does the Baikal Ice Marathon differ from other marathons
A.Only men are allowed to run in this race.
B.The runners are often distracted by tourists.
C.There are many progress markers on the ice.
D.The runners can see the finishing line from the start.
3.What is the most challenging part of the race for Messina
A.The cold climate. B.The long distance.
C.Noisy surroundings. D.Loneliness.
4.How many advantages and disadvantages are listed about the loneliness
A.5. B.4. C.3. D.2.
D
The latest IPCC report does not mince words (直言不讳)about the state of our planet: we must act now to achieve global change at a scale that has "no documented historical precedent (先例)" in order to avoid the climate disaster that would result from a 2 degrees Celsius rise in average global temperature. Climate change already affects the world's most helpless people including poor rural communities that depend on the land for their livings and coastal communities. Indeed, we have already seen the clear asymmetry(不对称) of suffering resulting from extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, wildfires and more.
So far, advocates and politicians have tended to focus on reducing fossil fuel(矿物燃料) consumption through technology and policy, such as a sharp carbon tax. These proposals are, of course, essential to reducing man-made carbon emissions (排放)— 71 percent of which are produced by just 100 fossil fuel companies.
Yet the international focus on fossil fuels has overshadowed (使显得不重要)the most powerful and cost-efficient carbon-capture technology the world has yet seen: forests. Recent scientific research confirms that forests and other "natural climate solutions" are absolutely essential in reducing climate change. In fact, natural climate solutions can help us achieve 37 percent of our climate target, even though they currently receive only 2.5 percent of public climate financing.
Forests' power to store carbon dioxide through the simple process of tree growth is staggering: one tree can even store an average of about 48 pounds of carbon dioxide in one year. Recent research shows undamaged forests are capable of storing the same amount of the carbon dioxide emissions of entire countries such as Peru and Colombia.
For this reason, policy makers and business leaders must create and strengthen ambitious policies to prevent deforestation, and support the sustainable management of standing forests in the fight against climate change. Protecting the world's forests ensures they can continue to provide essential functions aside from climate stability, including producing oxygen, filtering water and supporting biodiversity. Not only do all the world’s people depend on forests to provide clean air, clean water, oxygen, and medicines, but 1.6 billion people rely on them directly for their livelihoods.
1.What will climate change affect according to the passage
A.It will surely achieve global change at a scale that is more serious than ever before.
B.It will only affect people living in the poorest rural regions.
C.It is likely to lead to more frequent extreme weather events.
D.It is entirely determined by fossil fuel consumption.
2.What's the finding of the new research
A.Reducing fossil fuels is the most powerful and cost-efficient technology.
B.Forests are vital to reducing climate change due to their storage power.
C.Most of our climate targets can be accomplished with the help of natural climate solutions.
D.Natural climate solutions have proved less efficient than conventional solutions.
3.What does the underlined word "staggering" in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Astonishing. B.Speeding. C.Embarrassing. D.Shrinking.
4.What's the author's purpose of writing this article
A.To compare two different approaches to dealing with climate change.
B.To argue against the view that focuses on fossil fuels reduction counts.
C.To urge scientists to do more research into natural climate solutions.
D.To point out forests are the most powerful weapon for fighting climate change.

Can Animals Predict Earthquakes
The belief that animals can predict earthquakes has been around for centuries. In 373 B.C., historians recorded that some animals deserted the Greek City of Helike in groups just days before a quake hit the place. ①_____ Fish moving violently and chickens that stop laying eggs were reported. Countless pet owners claimed to have witnessed their dogs and cats acting strangely before the ground shook.
②_____ It was documented in news reports that three days before the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, thousands of toads(蟾蜍) appeared on the streets in Mianzhu, a city hit very hard. Also snakes reportedly left their homes and headed for safety several days before the destructive earthquake.
③_____ Some theories are that they feel movements, or weak shocks, in the earth before humans do; or that they become aware of gases going out of the earth. Another belief is that animals are very much in tune with Earth's magnetic(磁性的) field, so they detect electrical signals caused by electromagnetic field changes, causing them to pay attention to the warning that an earthquake is about to happen.
The United States Geological Survey states that there has been no concrete evidence for the fact that animal behaviour has a relationship with the occurrence of an earthquake. ④_____ American experts on earthquakes are also skeptical. They think that animals may have strange behaviour at any time due to other reasons-because they are hungry, defending their "countries", or are about to face a dangerous situation. ⑤_____ They continue to follow the "anecdotal evidence". The hope is that one day what they have learned will prove to be extremely useful in predicting earthquakes more accurately, thus saving millions of lives.
A. Exactly what animals have sensed can't be fully understood.
B. The connection between them has never been scientifically made.
C. Other researchers around the world, however, have not given up on the idea.
D. It is necessary to know if the animal behaviour is an advanced warning signal.
E. Records of similar animal foretelling of earthquakes have surfaced ever since.
F. Wild creatures also show various kinds of abnormal reactions before earthquakes.
G. Perhaps this sense that some animals appear to have can protect us from natural disasters.

第二节 (满分25分)

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, " If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!" Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children , he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town."
"What You forgot the name Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear sir or madam,
I’m writing this letter to call on attention to the community lecture concerning garbage classification. Given that most neighbors fail to classify garbage properly though they really try to, our community will organize this lecture in an attempt to guide this deed.
Garbage classification is of great significance. Firstly, not only can it cope with pollution issue effectively but more space originally occupied by wasteland will be spared. Secondly, we can undeniably make a difference by taking advantage of recyclable garbage.
To fulfill your obligation to live an eco-life, come and join in the lecture to be given at 3 pm next Sunday on the playground of Hongqi Primary School. Only with combined efforts can we make our neighborhood better.
Yours,
Hongqi Community
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
"What is the matter now " asked his wife. "I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day," replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would usually blink his eyes quickly. "Tell me the truth," ordered his wife. "As you told me, I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forgot the station where I left our children!" whispered the professor, his voice trembling. "What a bad memory!" shouted the wife.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.
