(·兰州五十八中高二检测) Who are these people rushing by you in the street More than 215 million people now call America “home”, but most of them can trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become “American” is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a kind of “side-by-side” living in which groups of people from other countries often have kept many of their customs and habits.
They join the general American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business, and sports—but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United States, in churches, music, food, national groups,or newspapers.

Dear Qian Fei,
I'm glad to learn that you're thinking about studying abroad. It's true that more and more Chinese families are sending their children abroad to study. Some of them even send the students in middle school or elementary school to different countries. Personally I think, some of the teenagers are not mature enough to take care of themselves. They are not independent. When they are at home, they depend on their parents or grandparents. Therefore, it is easy for them to get lost both in their life and in their study abroad. My suggestion is that we teenagers should not be sent abroad too early, and the best time for being abroad to study is when we graduate from the college or university. Perhaps, that is much better.
Yours,

(·无锡梅村高级中学高二月考)When I began planning to move to Auckland to study, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs, the cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism.
Despite these worries, I came to New Zealand in July, 2009. I have found the place and people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.
Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door asking for a job. However, I received little or no response. This became my routine every day after college for a few weeks.
One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities. People there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that manner. As I was about to leave, a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what the others had said, approached me and asked if I would wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, he returned. He asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.
I was a little surprised, but had a good feeling about him, so I went along. Along the way, I realized that I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his business partner's office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking, and added that I should give him a call if I ever needed anything. I handed out my resumes and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.
It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.

(·湖州市吴兴区高二阶段检测)After living in the United States for quite a long time, I do not think about the cultural differences any more. Last month, my parents came to visit me. Their observations on the American lifestyle reminded me that cultural differences between living in China and America are actually everywhere.
When my parents came to America, they praised my house. Everyone had his/her own bedroom:there was a front yard, a backyard and a garage; there were many bathrooms—all convenient and comfortable. However, they were not used to the glass doors at the first floor. My mom, from southern China, was worried that someone would break open the glass doors. Though I said that nobody would do that, she was still worried about it.
When I brought them to eat in fast food restaurants, whether it was in McDonald or KFC, they saw that refilling drinks was for free. This concept of free refill was so new to them.
A Chinese friend told me a story. He and his American girlfriend ate at a restaurant. His girlfriend wanted to drink English tea. He was curious, so he tried some and found that it didn't taste bad with milk and sugar in it. Adding more water to tea is free of course, so he drank more cups. His girlfriend found it embarrassing and explained to him that what he was doing was not exactly fair. If he wanted to drink more tea, he should buy another cup. My friend thought that Americans could take advantage of the free refills, but only a few of them did that. After staying in America for some time, he changed his habit.

Tips for travel to England
Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don't make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossing (人行横道) and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about litter (throwing away waste material in a public place). It is an offence (冒犯) to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age.
I'd like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you.

(·聊城三中高二模拟) My parents moved from Mexico to South Texas in the early 90s with the hope for a brighter future for their family of nine—my parents, four boys and three girls. My parents have always wanted the best for us and they have done everything possible to encourage us to get a university degree. Never did they think that by pushing us that direction, it also meant encouraging us to move away and be distant from each other.
Initially, getting accustomed to the American culture and lifestyle was very difficult for my parents. They come from a culture where kids grow up together, go to school together and most of the time live in the same neighborhood. From our point, American family values were a bit different. Typically in the US, when you turn 18, you are expected to graduate from high school, move out, find a university, possibly find a partner, get married and start a life together. Most of these decisions take you away from home; usually you have to follow opportunity wherever that will take you.
This is my family's current situation. I graduated from Bethel College in Indiana in 2010, and in order to fulfill my financial responsibilities of paying off student loans, I moved to Washington State for my job with Experience Mission. Ideally my parents wanted me to come home to South Texas, but that wasn't where my opportunity took me.
Currently, my sister Jennifer lives in Waco, Texas, about eight hours from my parents. My two younger brothers also decided to go to college at Bethel and are away from my parents. More than likely, when they graduate, they will probably not move back home to South Texas.
My parents never imagined that their dream for a better future would separate our family this way. Facebook has played a crucial role in the way we communicate while living in different places. Since we all use Facebook, we have found a place to connect and feel as if we were there together with each other.

(·厦门市集美区高二月考)How do you get a job in New York after your education at school is completed There are several ways.
●If your family is wealthy and owns a business, you can inform your parents you are now ready to start work. Few people have such relatives.
●Most colleges arrange job interviews for their graduating seniors with the major companies who are hiring young workers. The company will interview many of the seniors and offer jobs to them.
●You can look at the job advertisements in the newspaper. If a company is looking forward to hiring a worker, they often put an advertisement in the paper.
●You can inform all your friends who are working that you are now ready to go to work. Your friends can introduce their company if there is a need for more workers.
●You can write a letter with your resume to different companies advising them you are looking for a job. If the company likes your resume, they may call you for an interview. After the interview, you may get a job.
●If you are a teacher, you can apply directly to the Board of Education for a teaching position. They will process your papers and will offer you a job if there is a need in your area of teaching. Maths and science teachers can always find a job.
●Scientists may apply to private companies and also to the government for a job. Many government departments hire scientists.
If you try all of the above and you still do not get a job, you should consider going on to graduate school.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Old and Young Team up to Revive Nyatiti Music in Kenya
The eight-stringed nyatiti was once a popular instrument in Africa's Great Lakes region, but its use has declined dramatically. Now, a Kenyan master is teaming up with a young virtuoso to revive (复兴) the tradition with a new album of nyatiti music.
Oduor Nyagweno's been playing the nyatiti, a traditional African instrument, since he was a boy in Kenya's western region.
He earned the nickname Nyagweno, meaning “spring chicken” in the Luo language, for his boundless energy as a young player. He says, “I started when I was 13 ... When I first saw the instrument, and when I first held the instrument, it was a good feeling, it was an indescribable feeling ... Now, I'm 70 years, and I'm still playing.”
The nyatiti was once popular throughout this part of East Africa. It is made of a wooden resonator covered in goat skin, and players pluck its eight strings like a harp (竖琴).
Since those raucous days, the nyatiti has faded in Kenya. Old players passed away and young people took an interest in rock and hip hop music.
But Nyagweno hopes to keep the instrument alive. He's teamed up with a young virtuoso, 25-year-old Daniel Onyango, and other Nairobi-based musicians to make a full album of classic nyatiti music.
Onyango has studied under Nyagweno for seven years. He's taken the nyatiti international, performing in Uganda, Sweden, and the United States.
He also gives the old instrument a modern twist, playing the nyatiti in a band that includes electric guitar, saxophone, and drums.
“I think one of the unique things about young people picking up the instrument is they are able to experiment and popularize the instrument,” said Onyango. “The people in the urban setting perceive this as an instrument that you can only play for the tourist ... and I think that has had a negative effect on our musical heritage. But also it's a cool challenge, because there's more possibilty, you automatically stand out among thousands of musicians who play western guitar.”
For Nyagweno, seeing a new “spring chicken” play the nyatiti gives him comfort that his legacy (遗产) won't be lost.
He says, “I can say that he is like my son. Playing the nyatiti won't stop with my death. He will continue the traditions of the past. It can't be extinguished yet as long as we are still teaching them.”
写前导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一个老师和一个年轻乐队挽救一种非洲古老的音乐形式的故事。

(·襄阳樊城区高二月考) Did anyone find the names of “Great Britain”, “the United Kingdom”, “England” and “the British commonwealth” which have the same meaning Strictly speaking, these names all refer to something different. None of them are exactly the same as any of the others.
The British isles refer to the main islands and several thousand small ones as well, which you can see on the map. Great Britain, or Britain, refers to the larger of the two main islands. But the word “Britain” is often used as a short form for the United Kingdom or you call it the UK.
Now as for England, it refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and the official name of the country, which many people popularly refer to England.
Finally, the Britain commonwealth is the usual name for what is left of the British Empire. This change shows the weakening of British Empire and the rising of the national liberation movements throughout the world today.

(·成都双流区高二检测)“Food in France is still primarily about pleasure,” says Mark Singer, technical director of cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.“Cooking and eating are both pastimes and pleasure.” The French might start their day with bread, butter, jam, and perhaps something hot to drink—it's a time of the day when the whole family can be united. Singer, born in Philadelphia, has lived in France for more than 40 years.
“Although things have changed greatly in the past 20 years when it comes to food in the country,”he says, “and what was a big affair with eating has been slowly softened up, there are still events in the year, like birthdays and New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve that are still reallyanchored in traditional food and cooking. But it's not every day.”
“Some people think French food life may be a performance,” adds Jennifer Berg, director of graduate food studies at New York University. “They want to believe that France is this nation where people are spending five hours a day going to 12 different markets to get their food. The reality is that most croissants are factory-made, and most people are buying convenience food, except for the very small group of people in high society. But part of our identity relies on believing that myth.”
In Italy, as in France, takeout is still relatively rare.“Eating fast is not at all part of our culture,” says Marco Bolasco, editorial director of Slow Food and an Italian food expert.“Our meals are relaxed, even during a lunch break.Food in Italy is love, nutrition and pleasure,” he says.An Italian child's first experience with food is not small round cakes or rice or eggs, but probably ice cream, notes Bolasco. Status and wealth play less of a role in food.

(·广州越秀区高二质量检测) Immigrant children are often highly motivated and have ambitious parents. And these clever, knowledge-hungry youngsters often achieve higher results than the rest of the classmates.
In 1954, the United States opened its borders to an immigrant from Syria. His son, Steve Jobs, became one of the most creative entrepreneurs. In the current refugee crisis, that might look like a fairy tale, but it is not that unbelievable.
While immigrant youngsters might face cultural, social and economic disadvantages, the top 10% of 15-year-old students with an immigrant background in the United States did just as well as the top 10% without an immigrant background, as measured by Pisa, an international test.
In fact, when accounting for social background, these high-achieving immigrant teenagers were almost a school year ahead.
This doesn't only happen in the United States. In 13 out of the 37 countries with comparable data, including the United Kingdom, the top 10% of immigrants were at least 10 points ahead of their non-immigrant counterparts in Pisa, after accounting for social background.
These highly motivated students, managing to overcome the double disadvantages of poverty and an immigrant background, have the potential to make exceptional contributions to their host countries.
On average across all countries, top performing immigrants and non-immigrants reached similar levels of performance on the Pisa mathematics test.
Many immigrants, after the sacrifices of migrating, seem determined to make the most of any opportunity that arises.
Their children also seem ready to take on an academic challenge. Alongside the Pisa are questions about students' willingness to try to solve more complex problems. First-generation immigrants, including in the UK, are more likely than average to want to stretch themselves and try to answer more difficult problems.
The OECD's research shows that in most cases immigrant students and their parents hold an ambition to win the matches, and in some cases they go beyond the expectations of families in their host countries.
For example, parents of immigrant students in Belgium, Germany and Hungary are more likely to expect that their children will go to university and get a degree than parents of students without an immigrant background.

Ⅱ 概要写作
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Many years ago, I had my first chance to visit Russia. “Russians are a very polite people,” I had been told before my arrival. One of my friends explained that a gentlemanwill pour the lemonade for the ladies and show other good manners.
Toward the end of my three-week trip, I was invited by my Russian friend Nicolai Vasilevich and his wife Yulya out to dinner. At the end of a wonderful meal, Yulya asked if I would like a banana. I politely declined (婉拒) and thanked her, and explained I was most satisfied with the meal. But my mind was racing: “What should I do Should I offer her a banana though they are as close to her as they are to me What is the polite thing to do?”
“Would you like a banana?” I asked Yulya.
“Yes,” she smiled, but didn't try to take any of the three bananas in the fruit basket.
“Which one would you like?” I asked again.
“That one,”she pointed at one of the bananas. So thinking about Russian politeness, I picked the banana Yulya had pointed at. Then I peeled it half way and handed it to her. Smiles on Yulya's and Nicolai's faces told me I had done the right thing. After this experience, I spent much time letting the world know that in Russia, the polite thing was to peel bananas for ladies.
However, sometime during my third trip I learned I was wrong.
“Oh no, David,” a Russian politely corrected me. “In Russia, when a man peels a banana for a lady, it means he has a romantic interest in her.” How embarrassed I felt.
So to communicate properly with people of different cultures, we should watch carefully how people of the same culture communicate with each other. Besides, don't be afraid to ask questions about their culture.
