Have you ever heard the saying“If you want a friend, be one”?Here is
how anew teachermade friendswith the girls and boys in her class on the
first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiledat each girl
and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, “Goodmorning. How nice
it is to have all of you in my class this year. I’d like to know each of you. I
am sure we will enjoy working together. ” Everyone felt that she meant what she

Phillip Island is a small island and nature reserve off the coast of south
Australia,about140km from Melbourne. on the island you can see
koalas,kangaroos and the main attraction,the penguin(企 鹅)parade on
Summerland Beach.
As duskwas comingnearer, wemadeour way down to the beach,as did
everyone else. As it got darker, people talked less, keeping an eye out on
the beach to see the arrival of that first penguin.
Suddenly there was movement at the edge of the surf and all heads
turned as one. There, standing by the edge of the water was the smallest

penguin we had ever seen. He looked left, then right,as if he was
considering crossing a busy road and then he ran quickly across to the sand
dunes(沙丘)and the penguin burrows(地洞).
He must have been the scout(侦查员),because after him, there came
groups of penguins, some consisted of two or three penguins, some had about
ten or fifteen, but they all made that same mad dash across the sand into the
burrows. Finally no more penguins emerged from the sea.
You could see the penguins here every evening and morning, but they
weren’t in cages or in small pools, the sea was their playground and it is a
sight we would definitely recommend to anyone.
You weren’t allowed to take flash photographs as it scared them. After
the penguins had gone to their burrows, you could walk along boardwalks
and see them there. That’s got to be worth a look.

English is spoken as a first language by several countries including
Great Britain,Australia,New Zealand,south Africa,Canada,and the

there are some differences in the way they speak and write.
The first difference is in the accent. Each country has its own ac-
cent. And within each country there area variety of accents called
regional accents. Another difference is the spelling of some words, like
color and colour,or theater and theatre. And a third difference is that
some of the words are not the same at all. For example,Americans say
restroom,Canadians say washroom,and the British say W. C.(water

live in Europe , most likely you will be more exposed to British English.

for business?Travel? To watch movies?Think about the kind of
English you plan to use and focus on understanding people
from that area.
But no matter where you study English or whether it , s British ,
American, Australian , or whatever , it ‘s good to know a little about
English in other countries.
12. what does the word“restroom”refer to for American people?
A. A room for a rest.
B. A place where the toilet is.
C. A place for you to wash hands.
D. A room where people can speak English.
13. In howmany ways is English different from one country to another?
A. One. B. Two.
C. Three. D. Four.
14. According to the third paragraph , the author mainly focuses on
A. the reasons for learning English
