As a middle school student, you may have much stress at school. You may find it hard to deal with it. Here are some suggestions for you.
◆ Create a plan
This is a good way for you to deal with stress. You can write down all your class projects, after-school activities and anything else you need to do at school. It is the easiest way to stop yourself from forgetting anything important. Then you will get less stress.
Get plenty of sleep
Most teenagers get less than eight hours’ sleeping time each night. This can have a bad influence on your performance at school and give you much stress. Turn off the computer and the phone, and go to bed early at night.
◆ Have a healthy “escape(逃避)” from school
You can try to forget your schoolwork for a while and relaxed. You can go to the mall, visit the park, hang out with friends or do sports you love. These are all good ways to “escape”.
◆ Don’t procrastinate.
If you always wait until the last minute to start working, you’ll be easy to get much stress Remember not to procrastinate. When you get some work to do, just do it right away.

A new study out of Canada suggests teenagers should spend less time looking at screens and more time joining in activities. The findings were based on a survey of 28,000, 7th graders in British Columbia. They answered the questions about how much time they spent watching TV and playing video games, and how much time they spent on outdoor activities like sports and music programs. Then they ranked how good they felt about each day when they woke up. From their answers, researchers said that teenagers who spent more time on activities were mentally healthier and less worried and upset than those who spent more time with screens.
__▲__ For them, researchers say the negative(消极的) effects were stronger. So how much screen time is too much The Canadian Pediatric Society says all teenagers should have less than two hours of screen time per day. But it’s important to point out that the information for it was gathered between 2014 and 2018 years before the coronavirus pandemic(新冠疫情) hit.
This year, with fewer chances to see friends and join in activities, teenagers have shown higher levels of depression(抑郁) and worries according to another research. The lead author of the Canadian study says even though it’s harder to do, it’s still important to find ways for teens to safely have programs and hobbies that are away from screens.

①“My granddaughter usually sleeps at nearly 11:00 every night. She is only in Grade Six. It’s really worrying to see her go to bed so late.” said Liu Fang, a 70-year-old Beijinger on her way to pick up the young girl after school.
②This is quite common in China. According to the 2020 Mental Health Blue Book, 95.5% of primary school students sleep less than 10 hours, and 90.8% of middle school students sleep less than 9 hours in 2020.
③The reasons why students are short of sleep are quite different. “I sleep less as I want to get higher grades, and higher grades often means heavier schoolwork.” said Yang Yue, a ninth-grader.
④Students’ poor self-control is another reason for being short of sleep. Yang’s schoolmate Shu Haoyu says he often plays mobile games after doing a bit of homework. “Because of poor study habits, I usually go to bed late, sometimes at 12:00 p.m.” said Shu.
⑤Scientists find that lack of sleep might increase the students’ risks of developing mental and physical health problems. It’s easy for teens to feel down or be short of patience if they don’t get enough sleep. Besides, it also gets in the way of their study. It may be difficult for students to memorize the text without enough sleep.
⑥This worrying situation has driven the Ministry of Education(教育部)to make an action plan called “The Sleep Order”. It clarifies(明确)the sleep time of primary and middle school students of different ages, and requires homework, off-school training, and games to make way for students’ sleep.
⑦“Primary school students are suggested to get at least 10 hours’ sleep at night, nine hours for junior high school students and eight hours for senior high school students.” said Lyu Yugang, an official with the ministry.

If it feels like you are the one doing most of housework in your home, it may be time to share it with your children. Giving kids chores(家庭杂务) not only helps you relax, but also encourages teamwork and discipline. They get to understand they are playing an important role in the family.
“Most of the problems here come from the words we use. There’s a big difference between ‘doing chores’ and just ‘helping out’ around the house.” says Sarah Ockwell, author of Toddler Calm. “Chores are a normal part of everyday life and it is important that children learn to understand this as young as possible. Children need to understand that they are expected to do something for all parts of family life,” she adds.
Chores may make them consider the time you spend on keeping the home clean and tidy. They may be a little more thoughtful to care about your work, perhaps even putting their dirty clothes in the washing basket rather than just put them on their bedroom floor.
Children are pretty egocentric, and they only think about themselves a lot of the time. However, they also like to receive praise for their actions. So doing chores gives them the chance to be helpful and do something for others but not just for themselves.
It’s good for a child’s self-esteem to be given a task to do, even if it’s making their beds. Chores give a child confidence in their own abilities and teach them skills they’ll need in later life, like using the washing machine and cleaning the toilet.
“It also teaches them responsibility, and how to look after themselves,” says Liz who’s also the author of Toddler Calm. “These are important life skills, not least in how to not be a spoiled, selfish child!”

One time, I even heard my own mother saying that I wasn’t a good drummer. It broke my heart. But it also encouraged me to keep going. It’s embarrassing to perform poorly. But it’s also the best way to learn. Do you know any good singers You can try singing with them some time. They can give you some advice. I hope you can sing on a stage in front of everyone some day! Yours, Mike Dear John, I love playing soccer, but I’m not good at it. I played so badly that my friends didn’t want to pass the ball to me. I felt sad, too. However, I kept practicing every night. Soon, I made progress. I think you should never give up. Your singing skills won’t improve unless you keep on singing. Just enjoy yourself. As a child, whenever you have a problem, you are most likely to turn to your family members or friends to solve it. But as you grow up, you should learn how to do things on your own, because a part of being an adult is to master certain basic life skills. However, it turns out that many kids, even adults are gradually losing these skills. Whether it’s tying their shoes, learning to ride a bike or learning to swim, they all have a little trouble in mastering some certain important life skills. Nowadays, some children don’t know how to deal with the trouble they meet. When in trouble, they ask their parents for help right away. In this way, they can’t form their own independence (独立性).
Why do children lose their ability of independence One reason is that parents care about them too much. Actually, many parents often pay more attention to children’s study and grades, while easily forget the importance of children’s independence. They try every means to help them and even don’t let them do any housework. Once the child leaves the family, they won’t have the ability to take care of themselves.
American expert Tuimeng has spent more than 30 years researching 1, 500 children, and he found that excellent children have the independent ability and persistent (坚持不懈的) spirit. And they have the desire (欲望) to tackle any difficulties by themselves.
In fact, every child has a strong sense of independence. When they can independently complete a thing, they will be very proud and happy. So parents should give their children support and encouragement. While schools can provide more chances for students to attend competitions, social activities or volunteer jobs, parents and schools can also teach them some basic life skills according to their age, like cooking, washing and cleaning.
The child is a member of the family, and they should take the responsibility to do some housework. This can not only develop their independence, but also improve the sense of belonging.

Dear Ms Green,
My name is Joe Brown. I am 11 years old and I live in Balmain. I am writing to you because I love skateboarding just like all my friends in the area of Avalon. We need your help because a lot of adults in this area have tried to stop a skateboarding ramp (坡道) being built in the Mort Bay Development. They think young people will just get together there and make the place dirty. I think they’re being mean.
There are many good reasons for a skateboarding ramp. Firstly, skateboarding is a lot of fun for kids. And it will improve their skill and health, and keep them off the dangerous roads of Balmain. Also, a skateboarding ramp would be a great place to make new friends. This would be great for the whole area.
I have skated at the Avalon skateboarding ramp with some good friends. It’s a great ramp built by some skateboarders, where big kids help little kids learn to skateboard, and where parents are happy to take their kids because it’s a safe place.
If you can help to get this skateboard ramp built, we kids will be very thankful.
With best wishes and lots of hope!

She is not alone. In recent years, more and more Chinese teenagers are becoming homebodies. A 2021 survey of kids aged 2 to 14 showed about half of them spend less than one hour doing outdoor activities every day.

Even if this isn’t a problem, kids still prefer indoor life. Wang Yidi, 12, from Anhui No.50 Middle School, often reads Harry Potter, listens to music and surfs the Internet at home. “I can do so many things I like at home rather than hang out in smoggy (雾霾的) weather,” she said.

More than one billion young people risk damaging their hearing through over use of smartphones and other audio devices(音频设备), the UN warned Tuesday, put forward new safety standards for safe volume levels.
① In order to protect their hearing from harm, the World Health Organization and International Telecommunications Union announced a non-binding(非强制性的)international standard for the production and use of audio devices.
② Around half of those between the ages of 12 and 35, or 1.1 billion people, are at risk because of “listening to loud sounds for a long time, including music they listen to through personal audio devices,” the UN health department said.
Recently, about five percent of the world population, including 34 million children, suffer from hearing loss. ③ WHO considers a volume above 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes as unsafe.
WHO is calling for parents as well as automatic volume controls on audio devices to prevent dangerous use. ④
While some smart phones and other audio devices already offer some of these features, the UN would like to see a uniform standard used to help protect against hearing loss.
“Think of it like driving on a highway, but without a speed limit,” Shelly Chadha of the WHO told reporters in Geneva. “What we’ve suggested is that your smart phones should be fixed a measurement system which tells you how much sound you’re getting and tells you if you are going over the limit.”
61.What is the purpose of proposing new safe volume standards

B.To promote the development of audio devices.

Many Chinese primary and middle-school students can’t do housework today and do not take such work seriously. As a result, some are unable to cook or wash their own clothes when they enter college.
The Ministry of Education has recently released the new curriculum standard(新课程标准) for housework education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9, making it an independent course that students must take at least once a week. The new standard requires students in Grade 1-2 to learn to sweep the floor, Grade 3-4 to learn to plant cabbages, and Grade 5-6 to master the skills of cooking two to three dishes. Students in junior middle schools will learn to repair simple electrical machines. This new standard has been widely welcomed by the public.
Wang: We all know the importance of housework education. However, at home, some students are unable to do the simplest housework, as their parents insist they should devote themselves to study. Some of them gradually grow to be unwilling to do any kind of housework. Housework education is supposed to raise students’ interest in labor, help them experience different kinds of housework and, most importantly, correct their attitudes toward labor. The housework course will become an important step to develop and improve personalities of students.
Li: In order for students to develop in an all-round way, it’s absolutely necessary to add the housework course to school curriculums, which aims to encourage students in primary and secondary schools to progressively learn and love housework. It is important to make the housework class interesting, so that the students will really gain some practical skills. For this reason, schools should add professional(专业的) teachers to give the classes, instead of adding this new stress on parents and other teachers who are already busy with their daily work.
Zhang: Some people think it’s unnecessary to waste time on learning housework. If you want to have a meal, you can order food online, and for electrical machine repairs, you can ask for specialized help. However, people with the basic skills for daily life can go much more confidently and smoothly through everyday life.
It is the first step in encouraging young students to develop a healthy concept(观念) of labor and to be able to take care of themselves in daily life.

A.Students in Grade 1-2 should learn to plant cabbages.

C.Students in Grade 3-4 can repair simple electrical machines.
D.Students should take the housework course at least twice a week.
66.According to Wang, why can’t some students do any basic housework
A.Because students don’t realize the importance of labor.
B.Because housework can’t improve students’ personalities.
C.Because housework classes are not interesting as expected.
D.Because their parents require them to spend more time on study.

A.Ordering food online is a good way for students to save time.

Which part of the world has the most nearsighted students Just look around you—it’s East Asia. Nine in ten school leavers in major East Asian cities are nearsighted, according to the BBC. Experts say books and video games are not to blame. East Asian students, they say, aren’t getting enough sunlight.
People become nearsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus correctly. The body can produce a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) to stop eyeballs from changing shape. And guess what scientists have just discovered Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine, reported AFP.
According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day; in Australia, by contrast, kids spend about three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted—only 10 percent, compared with 90 percent in Singapore. “Children in East Asia just go to school, go home and stay inside. They study and they watch television,” Ian Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP.
But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, added Morgan. “As long as they get outside, it doesn’t seem to matter how much study they do,” he explained. “There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside. As a result of massive educational pressures and the construction of a child’s day, the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized.”
Experts suggest children should stay outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school.
