This year marks the 25th anniversary(周年纪念日)of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. Over the past 25 years, Hongkong has seen huge changes under the support of the central government. TEENS interviewed young people to share their stories of language learning.
Speaking “Hong Kong Cantonese(粤语)” is one of the most distinct features(明显特征)of people living in Hong Kong, because most of the early people in Hong Kong were from Guangdong Province and spoke Cantonese. After the First Opium War (1840-1842), English became its official language. Over the next 150 years, people mixed these languages.
Arthur, a 15-year-old native Hong Kong boy, said that he began to learn English when he was 4 years old. His school taught grammar and corrected students’ pronunciation. After he entered middle school, almost every course, including math and art, was taught in English. He simply used Mandarin(普通话)in language courses. But at home, Arthur sometimes talks with his parents in Cantonese. According to him, the old use Cantonese in most cases. But the language is not easy for the young because unlike learning Mandarin with “pinyin”, there are no such rules to follow.
Although using many languages is challenging, Hong Kong people including Arthur benefit from it a lot. After learning languages, Arthur thinks he can solve many problems. He is learning another new language—Spanish. “Through learning languages, I can learn a lot about a country and its history,” he added.
1.Which is the most distinct feature of Hong Kong people

B.Because they only use Mandarin at school.
C.Because there are no rules like “pinyin” to follow.
3.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing paragraph 3
A.To give an example. B.To introduce a topic. C.To explain the reasons.
4.What does the underlined word “benefit” mean in Chinese
A.受益 B.损失 C.困扰
5.What is the best title of the passage

Did you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don't have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition.
You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”. Write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner. You ’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook If not, start now.

“Learning a language is easy. Even a child can do it!”
Most adults who are learning a second language would disagree with the above sentences. For them, learning a language is a very difficult task. They need hundreds of hours to study and practise, and that will not guarantee success for every adult language learner.
Language learning is different from other kinds of learning. Some people who are very intelligent and successful in their fields find it difficult to succeed in language learning. However, some people who are successful language learners find it difficult to succeed in other fields.
Language teachers often offer advice to language learners: Read as much as you can in the new language; practise speaking the language every day; live with people who speak the language you want to learn; don’t translate—try to think in the new language; learn as a child would learn—play with the language and so on.
But what does a successful language learner do Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
First of all, successful language learners are independent(独立的)learners.
Secondly, successful language learning is active learning.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose(目的).
What kind of language learner are you If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully.
11.What does the underlined word “guarantee” mean in Chinese
A.许诺 B.几率 C.计划 D.保证
12.Which of the following is NOT the advice from language teachers

The history of Chinese characters dates back to ancient times, with the history of at least several thousand years.
There are many tales and legends about the origin of hanzi, Chinese characters: there is Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese character; the ancient practice of knot-tying; the eight trigrams(八卦); and ancient painting legends to name a few. It is generally agreed that hanzi began as simple pictures, images that the ancient Chinese people drew, painted or carved to describe nature or their lives. Other ancient cultures developed picture-based writing systems as well, such as the hieroglyphs(象形文字) of ancient Egypt or the script of the ancient Mayan civilization. Hanzi, however, is the only one of these ancient writing systems to survive.
Today, Chinese characters are the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world. Researchers generally agree that the oldest symbols recognizable as Chinese characters are those found on ancient oracle bones. These 3000-year-old symbols, known as, jiaguwen, were carved on turtle shells or bones of animals. The jiaguwen can give all of us in the modern era insight into how ancient Chinese saw the world around them and into their great creativity in expressing their observations. Take, for example, the modern character jia, meaning home or family. The jiaguwen character looks like a house with a nice pig inside, originating from the ancient idea that a good family home has plenty of food. Over thousands of years, this hanzi evolved into a variety of different forms but finally developed in a more stable manner after the unification of China under Emperor Oinshihuang.
When you first look at Chinese characters, you will most likely feel that they are very complicated. However, if you know just a little about how these characters are formed, you will find that they are not nearly as difficult as they seem. About 80% of Chinese characters are composed of smaller parts, known as radicals(部首), which are combined in many different ways to form tens of thousands of hanzi. Fortunately, you need to know only about two or three thousand characters for use in daily life!
As China takes its place in the international community, the Chinese writing system has spread to other countries. Today, many international students are studying Chinese, both the spoken and written language, and are coming to appreciate China’s fascinating culture. And, as China’s culture and society have continued to develop, the amazingly versatile Chinese characters(hanzi)have been adapted for use in digital format on computers and other devices. And so written Chinese lives on, spreading Chinese culture wherever it goes.

I’ve been interested in languages for as long as I can remember. My dad was a language genius(天才). My family traveled widely when I was a child, and my dad would talk to everyone we met easily. His abilities greatly impressed me. I hoped that I would someday be able to speak as many languages as he could.
I wasn’t a natural language learner. When I was 11 years old, I made little progress in French at school and almost gave it up. After I entered college, I read many German writers in translation. I loved them so much that I wanted to read them in their mother language. This drove me to pick up German. After I mastered German, I found myself in love with languages. Since then, I have never stopped learning new languages. By my late twenties, I was able to speak French, Latin and Greek.
I’m often asked what my secret is. The answer is endless hours of reading and studying. Before I got married, I would spend 16 hours every day studying languages. I used to like walking fast outdoors while listening to a recording of language and repeating it out loud.
Now, I can read about 40 languages and speak most of them well. Asian languages are more difficult to master. It took me almost ten years to get my Korean skills close to native(母语的)level. I live in Singapore now. At home, I speak French with my sons. If my Korean wife is there, we’ll use English. When we don’t want the kids to understand our conversations, we use Korean.
I’ve studied Esperanto(世界语). I think the world will be a less interesting place if there is only one language. It is like visiting a garden where there is only one type of plant!

Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills spin (旋转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity. A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that’s not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.
Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it’s clean. Windmills don’t pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it’s getting even cheaper.
A lot of people don’t understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds. They used to be true, but it isn’t true anymore. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New windmills spin slowly, and they aren’t dangerous for birds.
However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn’t blow all the time, so we can’t use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.
Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power. About 2.5 percent of the world’s power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.

I grew up in a family of 12 (10 children and parents) and a large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Neighbors were in and out of each other’s homes at any given hour of any day, for years! Everybody was “family”. They married freely—that is, to people from any country. So it was common to hear people talking but not sure what they were speaking—there were Italian and French mixed with English, Eastern European accents (口音) with Asian English.
I later learned Spanish while living in New York City and married a Japanese man who could speak English. One day, my husband received a letter from a friend from Japan who he hadn’t seen in many years. This friend was visiting our city and we planned to meet. When we finally met, we discovered that his friend had been in South America for many years and spoke only Japanese and Spanish. So he spoke to me in Spanish and to my husband in Japanese; I spoke to him in Spanish and to my husband in English; and my husband spoke to me in English and to his friend in Japanese. We did this for about an hour! It was fun.
These experiences taught me the importance of learning other types of language. I can understand other people who speak a different language—language of someone whose experience has taken them down a road very different from mine.

Is there a connection between music and language According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.
“Musicians hear better,” says study leader Nina Kraus, “because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.” For example, when the violinists play in an orehestra(管弦乐队), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Sehlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, address or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. “Playing an instrument or singing,” says Nina Kraus, “can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.”
41.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2

Suppose you were to write the sentences: I must run or I’ll miss the last bus. You are not fully satisfied with it because the word “run” is not enough to describe how hurried you felt at that moment. But where can you find a more suitable word
In a situation like this, you might need a thesaurus. It can help you find the most suitable word to express your ideas. As for the sentence above, “fly” might be a better option than “run”: I must fly or I’ll miss the last bus. With the help of a thesaurus, you can easily improve your writing.
However, you must be careful when you are using a thesaurus. Very few words are freely interchangeable. Take the word “good” as an example. If you look up “good” in a thesaurus, you will get words like “superb” and “acceptable”. However, “a good meal” is different from “a superb meal” or “an acceptable meal”. “A superb meal” is far better than you would have expected. “An acceptable meal” is not bad, but it’s not good enough. Just as Mark Twain once put it, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug (萤火虫).” You’d better have an English dictionary on hand while you are using a thesaurus. Carefully study a word before you use it in your writing.
Using a wide variety (各种各样) of words to get your point across will make your writing more interesting. It will also help you communicate with your audience more clearly. As long as you use it properly, a thesaurus can be a great tool.
46.According to the article, in a thesaurus we can find lists of words that have ________ meanings.
A.funny B.similar C.double D.opposite

C.Acceptable>superb>good. D.Superb>good>acceptable.
48.What idea does the author want to support by using Mark Twain’s words (in Paragraph 3)
A.Few words are truly interchangeable. B.Some words are funnier than other ones.
C.Many English words have several meanings. D.It usually takes a lot of time to choose the right words.
49.What does the underlined “It” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Having an English dictionary on hand. B.Making your writing better day by day.
C.Communicating with your audience face to face. D.Using different kinds of words to express your ideas.

Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Arabella Kushner, a six-year-old Chinese learner as a “little star”. She also graded her performance with an “A+”. She started learning Chinese from her Chinese nanny(保姆) when she was just 16 months old.

Americans often try to say things as quickly as possible. So, for some expressions, we use the first letters of the words instead of saying each word. Many common expressions or long names are shortened this way.
B-Y-O-B is a short way of saying, “Bring Your Own Bottle.” The letters BYOB are often found at the bottom of a written invitation to a simple social event or gathering of friends. For example, let’s say I had a New Year’s Eve party. I might include on the invitation, “Please come to my party and BYOB.” The bottle each person brings is what the person wants to drink at the party or wants to share.
However, an invitation to a special event - such as a wedding -would never say BYOB.An invitation to an official or very special event often has other letters written at the bottom. The letters are R-S-V-P.

Ruby is doing a research these days. Below are some pieces of information she has collected.
In English, we use the pronoun it to call a bridge, a chair, or anything without life. But in Spanish, people use the pronoun el (he) for a bridge, and ella (she) for a chair; in German, however, the pronoun for a bridge is sie (she), and a chair er (he). When they are asked what they think of a bridge, Spanish speakers think of it as “strong” and German speakers think of it as “pretty”.
Like Spanish and German, French also uses different pronouns for things without life. For example, in French, a “bridge” is a “fhe”, and a “chair” is a “she”, just like in Spanish. However, these two languages do not always agree with each other on pronouns. In Spanish, a fork is a “he”, but in French, a fork is a “she”. Here, French shares the same idea with German.
Kuuk Thaayorre is a language spoken in Pormpuraaw, Australia. This language does not have words that mean “right,” “left,” or “behind”. When Kuuk Thaayorre speakers need to say where things are, they will say something like “There’s a snake to the south of you,” or “The glass is southwest of the bowl.” Kuuk Thaayorre speakers can always tell where east, west, south, and north are, even in places they’ve never been.

My manager at work does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free, but there may be a hidden cost. When we fail to see problems at work, the manager tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem. I once made a big mistake at the office and felt silly. I had egg on my face.

I can still remember someone who changed my world. She was the music teacher at my elementary school. She was good at playing the guitar. I wanted to impress her. However, I didn't know how to play any instruments
One day, she let me try playing her guitar. I did my best, but could only sturnble along (断断续续地弹奏). I put my head down and felt upset. "I guess I am not very good, "I told her. She looked at me with her kind eyes, smiled at me and said. “We are all good at something. You just need to find out what you are good at. Then you can share it with the world.”
Those simple words changed me. They planted a seed (种子) in my mind that continues to grow to this day. They made me realize that I had something good inside of me. I just had to find it and share it.
Can you change the world Yes, you can! You can change it through one choice, one person and one kind act at a time. All you have to do is share your goodness.

Many people are trying to learn a new language. Some of them consider it as a hobby, while others have to learn a language because it is required by their jobs or study. As a foreigner who is really interested in Chinese culture, I like learning Chinese.
It is thought that a person needs to know at least 3,000 Chinese characters (字) to understand most Chinese newspapers. The problem for most foreigners, however, is that knowing 3,000 characters sounds like an impossible task, for many of the Chinese characters look the same. That’s why some people give up halfway. It’s the most difficult part for me, too. But I manage to learn how to write each character by watching videos online. Whenever I saw a character I didn’t know in the street or on a menu, I would just write it down on my phone and then look it up. Slowly I’ve learned the characters that are common in daily life.
It’s also important to listen to Chinese as much as possible. I downloaded (下载) a lot of listening materials onto my phone and listened to them on the way to school, work and even dates with my friends. I also watched a lot of Chinese TV shows and films, where the words are not so difficult and there are always subtitles (字幕). In this way, I’ve also learned how to express myself like a native.
As for speaking, I practice talking about different topics in Chinese when I am cycling around, effectively talking to myself or in my head, thinking through different conversations and scenarios (场景). For example, whenever I was going to a shop, I would think how to say that in Chinese. It helps me to think in a Chinese way, which is really important.
Learning a language is never easy. Basically, I just use every tool on hand and take my learning step by step, and I’m still learning new things to this day!

89.What does the writer want to tell us in the last paragraph
A.It takes time to learn a language.
B.Chinese isn’t as hard as you think.
