Charles Darwin was one of the six children from a big family. His grandfather and father were doctors and the young Darwin went to Edinburgh University to study medicine. However, he hated to see blood and he soon realized that he couldn’t be a doctor. He then went to Cambridge University and discovered that he had a great interest in studying plants, insects and animals. Luckily, one of Darwin’s university teachers helped him join the perfect trip for a biologist: a voyage around the world to study nature.
The Beagle
In 1831, Charles Darwin left Plymouth on The Beagle, a ship that took him around the world for five years. While he was travelling, he studied the plants and animals in the countries and on the islands that the ship visited. Darwin also spent his time on The Beagle writing notes about the things he had seen. When he finally arrived back in Britain, Darwin was already starting to create his famous theory that all living things had a common ancestor (祖先).
Down house
At home at Down House, a place that you can still visit today, Darwin wrote many articles and books about his travels, but he didn’t want to make anything about his theory known to the public. He worked in his study, where he wrote 250,000 words about his theory of evolution (进化论), but he was frightened about what people might say about his idea that monkeys were the ancestors of humans. He thought the public would be against it and was so frightened that he became ill with worry. However, when another scientist started to write about similar ideas, Darwin decided to print his book, On the Origin of Species.

Although their dependence on Spanish could be seen as something that makes life in America more difficult, Jose and his high school classmates found a way of turning the disadvantage into an advantage. They founded the Spanish Immersion Institute (学院). The institute allows visitors from around the country to live with a local host family and attend classes. The four-week program is run by local youth (most of the program’s tutors are teenagers, while many students are adults), and the goal is to develop cross-cultural understanding. How did Churchill achieve so much One key to his success was his strictly observed daily schedule.
Churchill is not a particularly early riser, he is a night owl. Around 8 o’clock, he takes off his sleeping mask to the smell of breakfast. On his bed places a tray(托盘)to his own design, with a cutout for his round belly that allows him to have breakfast and work at the same time.
Churchill usually begins the mornings with a full English breakfast, often accompanied by meat from the previous night, and sometimes a glass of wine. As he picks through his tray of food, he peruses the morning newspapers. Sometimes he rises, walking to his beloved Clementine in her separate bedroom, to discuss a startling development. From his battle station he dictates(口述)letters, sips from a glass filled with water and some whisky, and reads until late morning. Then he bathes, dresses and begins his day. Lunch is followed by a walk round the gardens and ponds, cards with family and friends then followed by a nap. His nap is exactly an hour long. It allows him, he says, to get more hours out of every twenty-four.
Churchill’s daily schedule reveals important principles for success: he knows how to get things done. He is one of the most productive men who ever lived. To achieve productively, he always follows two principles. The first he learnt from Napoleon: strength of force in the most important places. The second is economy of effort(节约能量).
Economy of effort is one of Churchill’s excellent characteristics(特征). His daily work in bed saves energy for later, when he will often dictate from a stand-up desk. When travelling he is even more economical. Never stand when you can sit down, he will advise a visitor. “Never sit down when you can lie down, and never to miss an opportunity to visit a washroom, as there is no knowing when the next chance will appear.”

At 00:23 on Oct 16, the Shenzhou XIII spacecraft rose into the sky. Three Chinese astronauts — Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu — set off for the Tiangong space station.
During their six-month stay, they will set up robotic arms and do medical experiments, among other tasks. Wang Yaping will become the first Chinese woman to take a spacewalk.
It’s not an easy job to do all these things. Chinese astronauts get difficult training before going to space. All the Chinese astronauts are excellent pilots with hundreds or even thousands of hours of flight time. They also receive hundreds of classes to prepare for space travel.
One of the toughest parts is the high-G training. It simulates(模拟)the environment when the spacecraft takes off. Sitting in a super-fest spinning(旋转)machine, astronauts’ face muscles(肌肉)change shape. They cry tears as they spin. Blood can’t flow to their brains properly, causing a lack of oxygen(氧气)and even blindness. Astronauts must operate the spacecraft under these conditions.
Another exhausting exercise is the underwater training which lasts seven hours each time. It simulates a weightless environment. She had to wear a 200-kilogram suit and do tasks in 10-meter-deep water without eating or going to toilet. After each training, Wang lost up to 2 kg of body weight.

Do you feel lonely when you’re alone Loneliness is a feeling common to people inthe world. There have been many classic poems about loneliness written by poets(诗人) worldwide. One of the most famous poems is Fishing in Snow written by Liu Zongyuan(773—819). Let’s see how he described loneliness with simple words.
Fishing in Snow
From hill to hill, no bird in flight;
From path to path, no man in sight.
A lonely fisherman afloat
Is fishing snow in a lonely boat.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Liu’s poem begins with a lifeless winter scene. The first two lines show the world is covered with snow. It is so cold outside that there are neither birds nor people. The coldness is a metaphor(比喻) for the troubles he was facing. As an official, Liu Zongyuan took part in some political reforms(政治改革), but they failed. He was sent to a poor and faraway place. He felt depressed and lonely. The “lonely fisherman” in the final lines refers to Liu himself. But he was not afraid of the coldness or his troubles and didn’t give in to the hard environment, just like the fisherman. The poem gives us a kind of experience, trying to enjoy loneliness. Shen Yingbiao is a xiao player. Although he had strong interests in musical instruments from childhood, it is the xiao that has been the most important part of his life.
Not long after Shen was first attracted (吸引) to the instrument, he decided to learn it. In the 1990s, when Internet was not widespread in China, learning a less popular instrument was not an easy task because there were few teachers.
Besides teaching himself and listening to tapes to compare and improve, Shen stepped on trips to visit those who gave fascinating performances he heard on tapes, and received tutoring (指导) from masters in this area.
Since he had to study at school and then work to support himself, he could only undertake such trips in his spare time. “It was very tiring. Without high-speed trains, I had to take a train for more than 20 hours to Beijing, or other places, to visit people. But I was resolute to take this road. I wanted to improve my skills and learn more,” says Shen.
While learning the instrument, Shen was increasingly fascinated by the rich cultural meanings in the xiao. According to him, a scene from a TV series of a literate (有文化的) person piping (吹奏) the xiao in the moonlight, full of elegance (优雅), poetry and romance, has been kept in his heart since childhood. And that reflects the close relationship between this instrument and the literate in times gone by.
In ancient China, bamboo symbolized honesty, modesty (谦虚) and a spirit of trying to make progress. As a result, many liked the plant and used it to refer to their pursuits (追求) in poems. Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet Su Shi once wrote, “Better to eat without meat than live without bamboo”, suggesting the importance of bamboo in their hearts.
Therefore, the xiao, made of bamboo, was much more than an instrument, but something they often held in hands or put on walls to remind themselves of their pursuits, and they sometimes used the xiao to refer to themselves in poems as well, according to Shen.
“Since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the xiao was often used in gatherings and meetings of the educated and literate, just like the guqin. It was so popular then that if one was not able to perform it, they were regarded as old-fashioned,” says Shen.
During his learning process, Shen summarized his experience, which paved (铺平) the way for his later teaching. In 2000, with the growth of his fame, he was invited to teach dongxiao, a kind of xiao popular in the Jiangnan area of China, at an art school in Hangzhou. A year later, he set up the Xixi Xiao Society with his students to better promote (推广) the instrument.
79.How did Shen improve his xiao skills
① By teaching himself. ② By going on trips.
③ By visiting the masters. ④ By listening to tapes.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④
80.Why did the writer mention Su Shi and his poem in paragraph 6
A.To state a fact. B.To give an example. C.To express a feeling. D.To show an opinion.
81.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.A man who loves the xiao deeply. B.An instrument that is less popular.
