Monarch butterflies from eastern Canada make the most amazing journey in the insect world. Each year, this butterfly travels about 3000 miles to its winter home in central Mexico. How can it fly so far And why does it make this long and dangerous trip Scientists still don’t have an answer.
For many years, people in Mexico wondered where the orange-and-black butterflies came from every winter. Then, in 1937, a scientist started to follow and study the butterflies. For the next 20 years, he discovered that one butterfly started its journey in Canada. Four months later, it arrived in Mexico.
The length of the butterflies find their way back to the same place Another amazing thing is that the butterflies always return to the same area in central Mexico.
How do the butterflies find their way back to the same place This is an interesting question because only every fourth generation(代)makes the trip south. In other words, the butterfly that travels to Mexico this year is the great-great-grandchild of the butterfly that traveled there last year.
Each year, four generations of a Monarch butterfly family are born. Each generation of the family has a very different life. The first generation is born in the south in late April. It slowly moves north, reproduces(繁衍), and then dies. On the trip north, two more generations are born, reproduce, and die. Each of these generations of butterflies is born. This generation has a much longer life. It lives for about eight months. This generation of butterflies makes the amazing journey back to the winter home of its great-great-grandparents. The butterflies spend the winter there, and in the spring they reproduce and then die. Their offspring will be the first generation of the next circle of life.
Today, people are still studying the Monarch butterfly. But they are not clear about everything.

A desert(沙漠) is a difficult place for animals to live, and some have unusual ways of making a living. The Texas lizard has a strange way to keep itself safe. When a predator(掠食动物) gets too close, blood goes out from the lizard’s eyes. Then it breathes in much air to make its body look bigger. Another interesting desert animal is the javelina. To make a predator afraid and run away, the javelina bravely faces the animal. It makes a big noise with its teeth. It raises the hard hairs on its back to make itself look bigger. The javelina also gives off a strong smell as a warning when it is afraid. This smell is so strong that javelinas are also called “smelly pigs”. Javelinas keep safe by staying close to their family, so there’s a good chance they can make a predator change its mind!
You might think a rain forest would be easier to live in than a desert. After all, there's plenty of food and water in a rain forest. But that also means a lot of animals live there. Being able to climb trees is a useful skill in the rain forest. It allows an animal to keep away from predators. The sloth spends most of its life in the treetops. Its strong, curved claws(爪子) help it climb and hang upside down from branches. The sloth also moves very slowly. It does this so it’s not noticed. The aye-aye lives only in the rain forest of Madagascar, near Africa. The aye-aye is a night animal. This helps it to stay safe from daytime predators. However, the number of the aye-aye keeps going down and they may die out. People have hunted it because they think it brings bad luck. Also, much of the rain forest in Madagascar has been cut down, which has destroyed the aye-aye’s home. Today there are laws(法律) to keep people from killing it.

Srikanth is a farmer in a village in India. A few weeks ago, a group of monkeys came into the area. They ate the coffee beans on Srikanth’s farm and hurt the plants. Srikanth tried to keep the monkeys away.
Srikanth put a tiger statue at the gate of the farm where the monkeys came through. At first, it kept the monkeys away successfully. However, as the colour of the statue began to fade (褪色). The monkeys came back again.
The farmer then had an idea. He used some black paint and drew stripes (斑纹) on his pet dog Bulbul. Bulbul was brown, so it looked just like a tiger from far away. Srikanth brought the dog to his coffee fields in the morning and evening every day. “I saw them running around after seeing Bulbul,” he said.“The monkeys do not enter my farm now.”
After Srikanth’s idea worked, the other farmers started to learn from him. The farmers are no longer worried that their crops are eaten by the monkeys because the cute “striped tigers” walk in their fields. Unlike tigers, these animals don’t roar. They only bark sometimes. Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence system (远程遥控系统)” — allowing users to control the heating and locks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, health care and government services. Around the city, escalators (自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

A 500-kilometer journey toward the north! Last year 15 wild Asian elephants left their home in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province. Since then they have kept going north, moving through fields and towns.
People wonder why the elephants are on the move and where they are heading to. Someone suggested that the elephants need more space and food or they are losing their home. Another idea suggests that a change in Earth’s magnetic field (磁场) has made the elephants think that they should move.
Along their journey, the elephants have hurt 561, 333 square meters of farms and cost nearly 6.8 million yuan.
The government is trying to protect the safety of both humans and the elephants. They have fed the elephants much food in order to guide them away from city areas. They have also watched the group’s journey carefully and asked people not to get close to joke or scare the elephants. Some have suggested drugging (打麻药) the elephants and taking them back home. But scientists say this is a bad idea. “One possible way is to use friendly ways to change the elephants direction (方向) or lead the animals back to their home with food.” said Chen Mingyong, a teacher at Yunnan University.
Saving the Asian elephant
The Asian elephant is the largest land animal in Asia. These endangered animals are under Class-A protection in China. The elephants usually stand at 5 to 6 meters and weigh 3 to 5 tons. They are fierce animals and sometimes hurt people.

Baseball is very popular in America now, and it has a long history. Its history can date back to 1744, in a children’s book A Little Pretty Pocket-Book in the UK. There was a game called baseball. Later on, people got to know much other early information (信息) about baseball game.
In 1749, Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, played “Bass-Ball” in England. Some students played with balls ruled by Princeton College in 1787 and, a baseball club came into being in 1825.
The Boy’s Own Book (1828), told the rules to today’s game of baseball. It was played on a diamond-shaped infield (菱形的内场). When a player hit a ball through or over the infield, he could run. If the ball hit somewhere else, which was against the rule, he could not run. Three missed batting (击球) at the ball meant the player lost the game.
In The Book of Sports (1834) by Robin Carver, he brought the baseball to the American for the first time. And now, the baseball is very popular all over the world. Many people like playing it for fun. It’s also a way to keep healthy.
